“Wondeful stay in Le Touquet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

We enjoyed a one-night stay in the wondeful Westminster hotel. We had a room on the 4th floor, large and all new. Amazing power shower with enough space for 2! Nice decoration and lighting in the bedroom, plenty of storage space and a safebox.
I would appreciate tea or coffee facilities.

Nice small swimming pool, jacuzzi but the hamman space was not working properly at the time we tried. It seemed it had worked some hors before.
I would advise to go down to the spa area with your bathrobe.

We tried the 2-buffet-menu in the restaurant Les Cimaises. What a delightful experience: lots of choices, fresh and quality food, and amazing desserts! Don't forget to try the petits choux au caramel and the babas au rhum! Gourmet choice!

I advise you to park your car in the private parking lot at the rear and to enjoy the city center and the beach.

Old style romantic hotel with modern facilities. The renovated rooms are very nice. Our teenager received a single room, unfortunatelly clearly a smoking room and rather small. When we asked for an alternative solution, he was contacted by the management but accepted to stay. We would suggest that the management addresses this type of situations with parents and not the children. The sauna is very small – for some 4 people only and there may be crowd ! - and the swimming pool is not big either. After just few meters, the knees touch the bottom ! We loved the breakfast proposing inter alia large choice of fruits.

Room Tip: Ask for the renovated section and insist on a non smoking room if relevant to you/your partner/kids.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your comment praise for our rooms and breakfast buffet. We sincerely apologize for your son's room. Don’t hesitate to mention us in your next booking you need interconnecting rooms or to be side by side.
Regarding the pool, we share your opinion, but the constraints of the building do not give us many alternatives.
Hoping to welcome you once again, very soon!

Sincerely,
Lydia Launay

Beautiful hotel in an excellent and quiet location. Our mid week Gourmet break was very reasonably priced. Hotel parking is secure. We found the staff friendly and helpful and we liked the art deco interior. Our newly decorated room on the 4th floor was very quiet, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was lovely with bath and large walk in shower (with 2 shower heads). We had a delicious supper in the Cimaises brasserie - very casual. Buffet breakfast in the hotel restaurant was slightly chaotic (I think they were lacking staff that day) but there's loads of choice. Only criticism is the spa pool (if you're a keen swimmer) - it's small and you can't swim proper lengths. Once a few people get in the pool, you can't move! Also the changing rooms are tiny. We didn't try any treatments this time but intend to return again soon for some pampering. All in all a very pleasant stay.

We share your opinion about the swimming pool, but the constraints of the building (old) do not give us many alternatives to enlarge.

First the good points: It looks very impressive from the front. There's a secure car park at the rear. And then . . . er . . . I'm struggling.

It's not so much that the hotel was awful, though some aspects were very poor - it just wasn't right.

Most of all, the place lacked any coherent sense of style. Walking through the hotel you variously pass through multiple decades. You arrive in an oak panelled lobby with a collection of old brass and claret-tassled room keys on regimented display - marvellous, but then you're handed a plastic key card and it all starts to go wrong. You ascend in a charming, rickety old cage lift, but then walk through corridors that attempt a nautical theme (rope designs etc.). A modern slate grey entrance to the spa gives way to a different wood effect, then into bright gaudy colours around the pool and old blue and white tiles. Every area of the hotel seems to be from a different age and conceived by a different person with different taste. Carpet colours and style are also rather random and non-complementary. Our Executive Double room on the second floor was almost comically out of date, reminding me of seaside holiday hotels in Devon in the early 70s. I'm not sure I have the vocabulary to do justice to its blandness. It certainly didn't resemble the pictures on the website.

A few more serious complaints. The jacuzzi by the pool had so much chlorine in that I had to get out - the fumes made my eyes sting, and I do not normally have any problem with chlorine. I went to shower off and noticed the grill by my head was filthy, covered in dirt, rust and cobwebs.

My father, a traditional sort in his 70s, slipped the concierge €20 and asked for a recommendation for somewhere to eat dinner. The man took his money, then just pointed towards the town. No named suggestions. No offer to ring and book somewhere. Incredible!

Back to the traditional bar downstairs then for tea, and the illusion of a period grand hotel was this time dispelled by music from Elvis Costello and The Police - two great acts to be sure, but over afternoon tea at The Westminster?? (At breakfast we had Terence Trent D'Arby with our croissants by the way!)

Overall it all seems a bit desperate. There's a large display of photos of famous people who have stayed there over the years, but look closely and you'll see how contrived and pieced together many of the 'signed momentos' really are. This is almost a metaphor for the whole place - trying to be stylish and relevant, but not standing up to scrutiny.

This place very obviously wishes it was still grand. Regardless of whether or not 'grand' is actually sustainable in Le Touquet in 2012 is debatable - what's not debatable though is the sense of overwhelming disappointment our party of 6 adults all felt. A design director with a single vision would be a start, but it will take more than that to live up to the hotel's impressive facade I feel. A shame.

Room Tip: Do your research, check if you are in an old or new room.

Excellent hotel, superbly appointed with a really impressive art deco interior. Room decor has easily struck the balance between modern and traditional. They've even found a solution to the shower problem of many hotels (a fixed shower has power but no flexibility, and a shower you can move about has no power) well here at the Westminster the shower has two heads, one fixed and one that you can move. Brillaint!

Wasn't sufficiently resourced on this single night trip to use either of the hotel's restaurants for dinner, but the breakfast (included in a (single) room rate of just E100 a night) was superb.

If I'm being very picky, I could say that the room service menu could be improved upon (in bredth) a little.

The only thing I would add as a word of caution, however (hence the title of this review) is that the place is full of English golfers.

If you yourself are an English golfer this will presumably not be a problem but if you are from the regular world you may find this irritating, particularly if your room has compromised sound insulation with the room next door because it has an interconnecting door (locked of course, and probably a throwback to when the room was once that for a maid or valet to the larger room). In this circumstance you may grit your teeth when you hear the woman next door ring recpetion every twenty minutes to complain, especially when she does not even attempt to speak to them in French and has a voice exactly like that of Linda Snell from the Archers.

None of this is the hotel's fault, however, and so the hotel is definitely worthy of its five blobs for a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: You need to be seriously wealthy to use either restaurant.

The Westminster has seen better days but if you get a good deal it is well worth staying here. They very kindly allowed us to change our booking by a few days because of the bad weather even though it technically was not part of the deal. Classic rooms quaintly, old fashioned, but spacious and quiet. Four English language channels on the TV.
Breakfast buffet was generally excellent - except for the flaccid croissants. A toaster would have made it even better. Ate in la Cimaises buffet restaurant which was exceptionally good value and delicious. We will be back soon!

A charming and very stylish hotel in a great location. The room was very comfortable and quiet. There was secure free parking for the car. We didn't dine in the hotel, but the menu looked superb (although pricey!). Will definitely be back.
