I was part of a group of golf travellers, the organising company of which booked us in to the Dolche Chantilly hotel in Chantilly, France.
The website of this 4 star hotel looked impressive and as it is situated in the middle of countryside, we would surely be in for a quiet and restful long weekend.
On arrival at the hotel, we were greeted with an automatic barrier giving the impression that they don't just allow anyone in off the street. Proceeding to the front door, I was a little surprised being a 4 star hotel that there was no doorman or anyone around to help with our baggage. At the reception there was none of the usual welcome or 'Did you have a good trip'? The only thing I asked for was a quiet room to which I was assured it was.
The room of an approximate 8' x 9' in the eaves on the third floor was overlooking the hotel's swimming pool, the golf pro shop and a room above of which at the time I was unsure of its use. Not a bad double room albeit on the small size.
From then on it just got worse and rather than giving a blow by blow account, I list below some of the experience.
1. The hotel hosted one wedding party on each night of the weekend ie; Friday, Saturday & Sunday. The mysterious room above the Pro Shop was a disco. Which went on every night until 4 a.m.
2. We could not close the window as the A/C was not working even though I reqquested ssomeone to look at the ssysstem on more than 4 occasions.
3. The pool had a notice saying no swimming after 8 pm. Each wedding party's revellers climbed over the fence and ignoring the warning signs swam into the early hours.
4. Although having complained about the noise, the swimming pool use after 8 pm and that the A/C had not been fixed, the basic response was, they really don't care
5. The service in the dining room was so awful, one could have a three course meal whilst waiting between courses.
6. The cost of drink in the bars was extortionate. 12 euros for a pint of draught beer and 15 euros for a gin & tonic.
7. I asked to move rooms to avoid the noise and have at least one night's sleep, only to be given a room (although larger) directly below the one I was in.
8. The staff refused to speak English, they were serly, inefficcient and sometimes down right rude. On our last morning's Breakfast I had the audacity to ask for a second cup of coffee and having asked three times, I'M STILL WAITING FOR IT.
All in all, whoever rated this establishment as 4 stars, should stay there themselves.
In the past 4 months I have stayed in an awful hotel but with wonderful staff and in wonderful hotel but with awful staff, I know which one I would plump for.
Most people know that the French don't like the British, some of ther Frenchg are a little subtle about it, but in Chantilly, they made a point about it.
On complaining about some of these matters to the manager, they had the audacity to offer me a free weekend short break as if I would voluntarily go back.
