Owner description: Koldinghus was built in the middle of the 13th century, and in the centuries that followed it was one of Denmark's most important royal castles. In 1808 there was a fire that left the castle in ruins – a romantic relic. Today the castle has been restored and houses a museum which is a centre for cultural activities and special exhibitions of international standing.

“Interesting mixture of old and new”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

There's no other location that summarizes Denmark so well. An old royal palace that was burnt down during Napoleonic times to be rebuilt in the late 20th century with an emphasis on modern design. The reconstruction is modern and interesting while still preserving the character of the old castle. There's a lot to see in here too - I especially liked the initial galleries that described the history of the members of the royal family who lived here. If you're a fan of silver (which I'm not really) there's also a massive silver collection here along with a lot of other interesting historical exhibits.

“Not your usual castle!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

Koldinghus sits at the center of town, and has been a pivotal part of town for centuries. A long history of invasions, fires and royalty has contributed to its special exterior - a design masterpiece combining the ruins with modern architecture which enhances and draws out the characteristic nature of the building. The castle is always host to multiple exhibits, recently the 1001 Things exhibit has given the town an offbeat and unique take on its own long history. The employees are always nice, the castle grounds provide ample opportunity for exploration, and the location on the hill by the lake at the heart of Kolding makes it a perfect launching pad for a further investigation of town.

“Visit with a difference”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

When you arrive in Denmark the first thing that hits is the lack of traffic & the quietness of the countryside. We travelled from Billund (where Legoland is found) to Kolding & it was similar to being on a B road at 6am in UK. All of Kolding is delightful from the music in the shopping area to the freindliness of the residents. When we vivited the castle there was an exibition taking place & the courtyard was full of stalls sellingfood, drink & crafts. Inside the museum the dresses thru the ages took 50% of the area & then private stalls sold clothes & accesories. The beautiful design with so much style & lots of timber has stayed in my memory book since the visit. If you are seeking a trip with a difference, GO THERE!!!!

“Really old”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Enjoyed the cellars for prisoners, exhibitions and the old furniture. Unfortunately the were restorating the tower, so we couldn't get the ultimate view of the town
