“Enjoyed our stay very much”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

Stayed two nights here. Extremely friendly and accommodating staff. Rooms were very large and clean. Ability to do some laundry here (self-serve, token machines in lower floor) was convenient and inexpensive. Breakfast was very good and extensive in selection. Location was great, but Maria Alm is small, so... Would definitely recommend.

We stayed with other families over the 2013/14 new year. My first impression was that the hotel and its decor was tired and dated but as our stay progressed we were more and more impressed by this hotel and the staff in particular.
The family room was comfortable and kept very clean. The hotel has a decent location (certainly for us as skiiers) although parking at times was tricky. The food, mostly buffet, was very good. The food was regularly topped up, very nicely presented and a good variety. I'm not normally a fan of hotel buffets but all of our group enjoyed the quality of our meals.
The staff really made the difference. ALL were excellent - very polite, friendly, helpful and a real asset to this hotel. The hotel was very busy during our stay but at all times the staff looked after us. The barman, restaurant staff, reception staff and cleaners are some of the best we've ever experienced.
There was a minor fire at the hotel early on New Years Day morning. Some of the rooms were evacuated and fortunately all was sorted without much disruption after a few hours. Once again the staff handled this highly challenging and stressful situation very calmy and professionally.
Would we return ? Definitely !
Any room for improvement ? Better pillows ! The thinnest we've ever had and seriously in need of change.

The title of my review summarizes my opinion of this hotel, which features professional staff and very clean and good looking spaces. The hotel offers a not too small pool a, a fitness room and a nice sauna. The position of the hotel is also fairly good for the ski slopes which are 1 minute away by car (we did not use the the shuttle bus), unless you are willing to ski in the small in mountain right behind the hotel, in which case you can just walk.
I cannot give five stars only because the hotel offers a WiFi connection at a moderately high cost, instead of it being for free as you can find elsewhere.

We've just stayed at the Alpenland Sporthotel Maria Alm for a holiday with family and friends - eight adults and one toddler - for four nights. We were a rather mixed bunch, including skiers and non-skiers, and all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

First of all, the hotel itself. Most of us stayed in double rooms which were of a decent size, with a seating area and desk. The beds are standard split doubles with two mattresses on a double bed frame - a design common to many hotels in Austria. Each room also had a decent-sized balcony, although due to the time of year we didn't spend much time on them. One couple had a junior suite, with two single beds in a small adjoining room.

We had half board, and thoroughly enjoyed the extensive breakfast buffet in the morning. The dinners varied in the evening from a set menu, to a buffet and a gala dinner. All the options were very nice indeed and the food of a high standard. On the one occasion we wanted to make alternative dinner arrangements, the staff were very accommodating. Regarding other facilities, there is a very comfortable lounge and bar area and the swimming pool is larger than those in similar sized hotels.

For skiers, the Alpenland could not be in a better location. There is a ski rental shop across the road and a regular ski bus to the slopes outside the hotel. Within five minutes in the bus, you can be at the Abergbahn which gets you on to the slopes of the Hochkoenig ski region - connecting to other villages such as Dienten.

For non-skiers, the village is five/10 minutes walk away and there are plenty of shops, restaurants and walking routes. The larger town of Saalfelden is less than 15 minutes away by car or taxi and has train connections to the city of Salzburg.

All in all, we were very impressed by the hotel and would like to return in the future. Families and non-smokers may also like to know that the entire hotel is smoke-free - something that unfortunately cannot be said of all Austrian establishments.

Stayed at the Sporthotel last February (2013) and had a great time. We traded our place at the Marriott Grand Residence in Lake Tahoe for a week here to mix up the skiing destinations. All four of us, two adults and a 15yr old and 10yr old on the trip. Maria Alm is such a picturesque, beautiful mountain village and the people are great. One lift ticket got us skiing across 7 different ski resorts. The views were absolutely fantastic and so was the skiing. The hotel is clean and comfortable and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Rooms are smaller than what you'd get in the U.S. so if you're looking for really spacious, lap of luxury type accommodations this isn't your spot (nor are you likely to find that in Europe unless you're willing to pay and arm and a leg). If you're not high maintenance, I think you'll enjoy this place. The restaurant at the hotel is ok for breakfast, but I'd recommend going into the village for any other meals. On the 5th day of skiing, I took a bad spill and tore up my shoulder which required surgery. The hotel staff went above and beyond helping my wife interpret, organize, and get through that ordeal. The Austrian docs and nurses took great care of me. This was our first trip to Austria, and I'm a huge fan. I'd definitely go back.

We stayed with our family of five and our mother. Because we went in the summer, there was no snow but such a beautiful town. The view of the mountains were breath taking. The small old church in town was as grand as any in Europe. The locals were friendly and I learned so much about European living. We used it as a base to visit Munich, Salzburg and other sights in the region.

We stayed I the Sporthotel January 2012 through the timeshare exchange scheme. The pluses: location, comfort, swimming pool, staff - all excellent. That said the hotel is dated, food is mediocre with non-meat choices very limited and the overall offer beyond basics limited to the lobby bar. Which was fun and expertly staffed.
So very mixed feelings - it feels like its past it's sell by date but it very competently delivers basic services. Go with limited expectations and you will be pleasantly surprised.
