“Beautiful setting but just didn't add up.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

There are some really great things about this resort. The rooms are comfortable and well thought out with all amenities. The rainforest is lovely and the boardwalks help appreciate it. The main reception area is fine and the pool really is beautiful. The guest relations directors really do know all guests by name and make it their business to give good advice and try to give guests a feeling of being guests at a spectacular house hotel. But I have to say that things let the place down so that the feeling I have is that this is just not what it could be. As ever I could have been unlucky but things just didn't feel right for the level of resort they are aiming (and charging) to be. Things like - arriving and dinner is booked out, but instead of explaining that dinner is available out on the deck just not in the restaurant, making us feel we are really being unreasonable by asking to eat with them without proper warning. Or repeatedly challenging you for a room number at breakfast and presenting you with a bill even though it's included. Waiting a minimum of 30 minutes for any drink order to arrive. Cafetiere coffee included in your breakfast, but all other coffees are charged extra (a lot extra). Honestly the food is pretty poor - incredibly salty and massively overpriced. And when it's busy, the beds at the pool become very sought after - feel luck if you find one! Maybe they have just outgrown their amenities as they have expanded over the years, One nice thing is that the resort are very keen to ensure folks enjoy the area so they do recommend places and don't try to keep you there, so maybe the best advice is to enjoy what this place does so well and enjoy the truly wonderful area as well...though for us at least, that begs the question of whether it was worth staying there at all. Despite the many positives, I just think the answer is no for us. We spoke to a few folks that shared our views, but I can see that it's mainly the positive ones getting aired on Tripadvisor. I hope this review balances things out so you can have maybe lower expectations, and hopefully have them exceeded if you do stay here.

Dear Divesearcher-London,

In many responses by resort/hotel operators viewed on Trip Advisor, one can read a generic reply simply to acknowledge a guest's comments relating to a recent visit. I prefer to be a little more factual and explain in more detail.

If only we could live in a perfect world where any service provided was par excellence and every client departed with nothing more than compliments. Alas, as hard as we try, things don't always go according to plan and it is important to know why certain points are highlighted by guests so they can be corrected. Your visit coincided with the busiest time of the year where occupancy varies between 90-100% and in all room compendiums it is recommended that reservations be made for meals to avoid disappointment. Verandah/deck seating forms part of the restaurant and without a reservation, guests may have to wait until a table becomes available. This is not an unreasonable request at peak times and we are not unique in this area. Our coffee is far from "cafeteria" style as you put it. You may not have liked it but guests have a choice of French press coffee made with an award winning blend by Paul Bassett, also a leading Barista, with numerous awards throughout Australia and Asia. Our other coffees are charged at similar prices to other outlets in Byron Bay and compare favourably with Sydney prices which are accompanied with macaroons or shortbread cookies. Food that you say is salty may not be the same for another guest, so I can only comment on this as a personal taste rather than a general comment. We have not expanded since opening in Dec 04 and after 8 years of operation, our size has been constant. Seating both on the deck, grass area and verandah overall is sufficient for the numbers who wish to use the pool. In defense of the resort, our high occupancy throughout the year, the many awards won since opening, the positive trip advisor comments and awards given to us by them means that most guests are very satisfied in what is provided. As I said earlier, if only we could please 100% of our guests 100% of the time and live in a perfect world!!

Kind regards and thank you for your comments. John Parche ~ General Manager

This is what it's all about! Perfect place to unwind and relax in beautiful surroundings. Just a short walk to all Byron Bay has to offer. Staff were just lovely and the food was to die for. Don't hesitate. We wished we could have stayed longer.

Stayed at the ByronatByron for 5 days before Christmas. The perfect pick me up before the rush of the Festive Season The Setting is in the beautiful rainforest area of Byron Bay just ten minutes walk along the boardwalk to the beach. Yoga classes, swimming pool, exquisite food, great company and wonderful hospitality! A dream package! I can thoroughly recommend to all ages as the ideal place to visit. Thanks John and Lyn. ***** 5 stars.

Perfect for us. Private, great pool, nice staff, loved the bush setting and walk through to the beach. Awesome massage and spa! Great location to explore the area from. We totally relaxed and did not want to leave. Thank you!

This is our 7th trip to the Byron at Byron, the first with our second daughter who is only 7 months old. We are relaxing in the quiet evening in the main bed - our four year old peaceful in the sofa bed and the baby is in the portacot in the walk in wardrobe. It was 4 hours door to door from Sydney, an easy flight and by 5pm my husband and older daughter were swimming in the pool, while I fed the baby in the air conditioned comfort.. How good are these rooms; washing machine, dishwasher, cook top... Bath, shower, double sink. Everything you need to look after little things for little people. We all had dinner and the girls are sleeping soundly. My husband just opened a bottle of wine and we are going to watch a movie in bed. Tomorrow is yoga and the best masseuse I have ever encountered. Does it get any better?

Room Tip: If you are travelling with a stroller / pram, request a ground floor room.

We called in here on Friday night. Upon arrival the reception staff were so welcoming, lovely and polite. The guy then called past on a buggy when we were walking to our room and gave us a lift to our room to save us dragging our luggage.
The rooms are AMAZING! So comfy and gorgeous.
We then walked to resturant without a dinner reservation and the staff couldn't have helped us more. The food was delightful. Wine a-plenty.
A little boozy after dinner we arrived in our room to find a complimentary bottle of bubbles ! (seroiusly this place is amazing!).
In the morning I took a free yoga class with the sun shining over the pool - it was breathtaking.
We then made our way to breakfast. It was buffet - I didn't want buffet so the waitress arranged something smaller (an avocado on wholemeal toast) meal for me.
The pool is gorgeous and you could lie there all day.
This is by far the best place I've stayed at for a long time. I'll be back every twelve weeks for a perfect unwind !

I recently had the pleasure of staying at "BAB" with my wife and our 2 small children. The rooms were so spacious that my daughter had a big area to play with her toys. The surroundings were peaceful and very relaxing. With 2 kids, we didn't eat at any of the restaurants, but the resort is close enough to the main CBD to eat there. Overall I would recommend it for anyone who desires a relaxing getaway.

Room Tip: close the glass doors at night and turn the aircon on as small bugs can still get through the fly sc...
