“Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2009

We stayed in Malta for the first time in May. The Juliani hotel was superb. The staff were amazing, very low key but there for anything if you wanted it. The hotel was as clean as a whistle (I'm kind of particular). Ilham was fantastic and answered any email queries I had efficiently and courteously. She also made sure a specific request I had was taken care of which I really appreciated. She's certainly in the right industry!

We travel a lot and have moved away from chain hotels when possible. The Juliani is a perfect example of a very well run small hotel. Wireless internet throughout, nice breakfast, great staff, lovely rooms (we had a suite with harbour view - stunning position).

We recommend the Baraccuda restaurant for the most superb fresh fish and Peperoncino for great local food (but we'd personally suggest staying clear of Blue Elephant if you know your Thai food - unauthentic and extremely heavy handed on the oil).

Malta itself is just fabulous. Like one big swimming pool so if you're into swimming in the Med this is a good place to visit. Historically too it's fascinating, there's a lot of history and they are committed to restoring their buildings to preserve the historic interest.

We booked a three day package 6-9 May. Chauffeur met us at airport and we were offered a drink on arrival and the room (703) was ready on arrival at noon. The view was magnificent over the bay, room large and very comfortable with a flat screen TV at the end of the bed and an additional TV in the sitting area and free DVDs from reception if required. Bar area lovely and not expensive. Ate in Zest which whilst pricey was excellent. Also ate at Dolce Vita across the road (book if you want a balcony seat) - this was great. Barracuda on the last night was a real treat, also need to book and within 10 minutes walk along the seafront to Sliema.

Found Malta rather uninteresting and like a large building site so would't be visiting again BUT, for total relaxation, great food and sun this was a great break.

This was my second stay at the Juliani - the first being in February 2006 [see original review following below] - and can report that this small boutique hotel has only gotten better. Whist there may be other, bigger names in the neighborhood, one can be assured of some exceptionally friendly and attentive staff.

Would be excellent choice for any type of traveler.

February 2006

In Malta on business and after a week's stay at the run down Crowne Plaza - expensive, unmaintained and poorly situated - I looked at another "5 star" mausoleum, the Corinthia San Gorg, which is undergoing some construction work, leaving it's ugly reception area smelling like a chemical factory.

By fortuitous circumstance I came across an absolute diamond - the smaller boutique Hotel Juliani, overlooking the end of picturesque Spinola Bay; arguably the prettiest spot in Malta. What a relief from the agony at Crowne Plaza. Only two years old, the Juliani has all anyone might wish in a top notch hotel: high speed internet, terrific restaurant, modern/clean decor and an accommodating staff that shamelessly spoil the clientele. When I ran into a snag with my internet, the manager, George Rouvelas, took time from his busy schedule to personally fix the problem....with a genuine smile.

The breakfast arrangement is another endearing quality. All in all I can't say enough good about the Juliani, and that from a person who spends a lot of time on the road. I don't hesitate to recommend a stay there, but to fully appreciate the location try to book a room with sea view - from the intimate individual terrace it's great just to relax and enjoy the scene.

Aside from the hotel itself, there is a plethora of truly excellent restaurants -- Continental, Chinese, seafood, national, eclectic -- all within five or so minutes walk. For the fast food addict there's a McDonalds next door and a Pizza Hut just up the hill....but forget that. Instead, hit the popular Paparazzi just across the road and really enjoy what you're eating.

With panoramic views of Spinola bay this hotel is in a perfect location. It serves for a variety of stays. I was personally here on business for 6 months (long time in a hotel I know!) but the stay was made very comfortable and felt at ease and at home with the exceptional staff. The rooms are a decent size with king size beds (big plus). The service in general is very good. They have broadband internet and it is free in the rooms and lobby section which was essential for my stay. Breakfast every morning was great, can get the usual selection of cereals, fruits, breads, fry and can even get the chef to make omelette’s to your liking. There is a very nice swimming pool area on the roof which is very secluded as the building stands the highest in its location, great place to chill out, catch a tan, read a book or go for a dip. The night life is literally around the corner in paceville (3 minute walk) and there's a great Irish pub called the Dubliner across the road from them to keep you entertained during your stay. The main restaurant is called Zest and is on the 1st floor. Excellent restaurant with oriental and western dishes served up. Even though it’s a bit expensive it’s definitely worth going as the food and service is unrivaled on the island. You’re also spoilt for choice with plenty of other restaurants beside the Hotel. I really don't have a bad thing to say about this hotel and I've been to a few on long stays with work. I’ll definitely be back to stay, if not with work on vacation.

Hotel Juliani is indeed in a perfect location - easy access to the fab Malta buses, walking distance to shops and a stone's throw from the water. We spent three nights in room 402, and whilst we did enjoy our time in Malta, the hotel didn't meet expectations.

The junior suite was furnished in an interesting way ... as if they had removed furniture. Therefore there was no sofa (just two smallish chairs and a table) and the television wasn't even in direct line of sight of the beds or the chairs, which made it difficult to watch.

Our biggest concern was the quality of service recieved from the front desk. For a busy little hotel, we were amazed that there only ever seemed to be one person working, so more than once when we had a query we had to wait - sometimes for 10 minutes.

Although they were helpful in organising tours for us and booking cars, we were also disappointed that they didn't have US adaptors even though it was advertised (we had to go purchase one, when I had one at home I would have brought) and they had no take-out or delivery menus that we could have used after a long day out in the sun looking at the sights.

On the plus side, in addition to a great location, the room was very clean, and it was great that they restocked it every morning with shampoo, soap, etc.

First things first, if you only read the first paragraph of TripAdvisor reviews then the important thing is - if you stay here and are given a room ending with a 9, don't accept it, and ask to be moved. Or you'll spend your holiday next to the elevators, and spend all night listening to the motors and other machinery which will be right through the wall from you. The plumbing also seems to run past these rooms, and any time somebody turns on a tap or pulls the flush in another room you'll know about it.

We asked to be moved after a night of this, and - to be fair - they did offer us a better room with a "city view" (see photos), which was much nicer - bigger and brighter and quieter. It didn't have a safe (it has a couple of holes in the back of the wardrobe where one used to be ....), and it did have a no smoking sign, which our first room didn't (it had an ashtray instead). This doesn't bother us as we only requested non-smoking with our booking out of preference, but anybody with health problems or similar needs to be aware that if you request a non-smoking room you won't always get it.

As mentioned, the room was big and bright, well-presented, but (in truth) wouldn't be out of place in a Novotel or Ibis. Just putting a fancy picture on the wall and a couple of scatter cushions on the bed doesn't suddenly turn it into a boutique hotel, and can't justify its steep prices.

Didn't eat in the restaurant, and the one day we went up to the roof to use the pool it was shut. We probably won't go back to Malta, and if we did we probably wouldn't stay here.

If you're lucky enough to get a room overlooking Spinola Bay the view would be gorgeous, mind.

Hotel Juliani, a 4 star Hotel, is Malta’s only small design boutique hotel, and it is enviably located in the heart of St Julian’s. In fact, you’re never more than 25 minutes away from most parts of the island, including the beautiful baroque capital of Valletta. Originally a traditional seafront townhouse, the hotel has been meticulously converted to provide 44 rooms, an intimate setting and very personalised service to its guests. Today it remains a family-run establishment, and we are committed to ensuring you feel at home and well looked after. Each hotel room offers excellent facilities, fresh Mediterranean decor and plenty of space. Many also boast unobstructed sea views, and you will be able to watch the colourful fishing boats bobbing on the water from the comfort of your balcony or the rooftop swimming pool. Meanwhile, as a cosmopolitan commercial and entertainment district, St Julian’s surrounds you with many of the best restaurants, bars and shops that Malta has to offer. ... more   less
