“Malta Nov/Dec 2013”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013

Hotel initially was very difficult to find. There are no street signs and people kept directing us the wrong way. Note to next guests, ask for the McDonalds in St Julians. However, when we got there, we got a welcome drink and a warm hello. The reception and breakfast hall were smaller than expected but clean and cosy nonetheless. The room did not have a view; our window was facing someone's balcony and our bathroom window was leaking so the rain made the floor wet until we put towels on the sill. However, the room was clean, well-maintained, cosy and had a working TV. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was fine save the window. Breakfast had a good selection and was tasty - full English available and fresh orange juice were good. The location was very convenient, close to bus stops and quiet nights. The hotel staff were amicable and helpful in guiding us to things to eat and do. Also offered us an umbrella when the rain was terrible and offered decent selection of DVDs. The hotel also kindly gave us an extra two hours on day of checkout as our flight was not until early evening. We would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends and would stay there again!

Room Tip: No good view with the standard room but we did not feel the need for a quality view. If a view is wh...

I was traveling for both pleasure and a little business in Malta. The service at the Hotel Juliani was superb and on par with what we have experienced at high end properties in Europe and North America. We stayed in an Ambassador Suite. A wonderful value, king sized bed was very comfortable and the room was large. My teenage daughter commented on the comfort of the extra bed they provided. View of Spinola Bay was beautiful, even on the rainiest of days. The free WiFi was excellent. I was able to hold a meeting via Skype without any hiccups. Breakfast was good and included in our package; the same tasty items each morning. Perhaps a little variety would be beneficial? The Cafe was great for a coffee, was a nice spot for one of my business meetings. Zest was superb. Ate their twice, and they were very accommodating re: my gluten allergy. We also ate at other fine restaurants - all within easy walking distance of the hotel. Finally, the location could not be beat! We drove to sites a little further afield and took the bus (right outside the front door) to spots in Valletta. We've already booked again for next year!

Room Tip: Worth the splurge for an Ambassador Suite!

From the cheery greeting at reception (Ilhame is especially great!) to the moment you leave using the hotel's recommended taxi service everyone is friendly and helpful. I have stayed at Hotel Juliani several times in the last few years and while I visit Malta for business, I find the staff so welcoming that I feel I'm 'at home'. If you're looking for a great boutique hotel, I would certainly recommend Hotel Juliani, for business or pleasure, and I commend the manager (George) for selecting such a wonderful team. Keep up the good work!

Room Tip: I'd recommend a room with a sea view

Positives: Breakfast was plentiful, room upgrade with better view, gift from the hotel on the last day, and helpful front desk

Negative: The outside of the tub appeared dirty. Some wear and tear was visible here and there in the room.

This was our first time to Malta and we were not disappointed. Preferring smaller hotels we selected the Hotel Juliani and booked a Junior Suite for 10 days ovelooking tha bay. The hotel location is great right on the main bus route (12 Euros for 7 days unlimited) and inside it is very quiet even though our room looked onver the road onto the bay there was no sound. The room had a balcony which was very nice to sit on with a glass of wine prior to going out for dinner. The staff in the hotel are fantastic and couldn't be more helpful. We had opted for B&B and breakfast was excellent, with a great selection of high quality hot and cold buffet food and freshly squeezed orange juice to order as well as individually made Illy coffees, as many as you wanted. The chef would also prepare eggs any way for you if the hot buffet was not for you, overall the quality of thw food and service at breakfast was fantastic.

The hotel also has a reastaurnat Zest which we ate in twice, it's a combination of Aisain/Med food but we opted both times for the asian twist, first time the 5-course tasting menu the second time al-acarte, both times the food was excellent and I even got the wife to try sushi which was very good.

The roof pool and terrace isvery nice and we were very lucky with the weather , 10 days of >27 degs unusual in October but we weren't complaining.

Overall this is an excellent luxury boutique hotel and we look forward to returning.

We also ate in several excellent restaurants, Zest is the hotel restaurant, Vermell opposite the hotel is seafood and also excellent (we ate there twice also), and WiGis (pronounced Weegies) excellnt steak and wine (small so book in advance). The old quirky bar right next door to the hotel is worth a visit for the atmosphere, it has some interesting old photos.

Overall Hotel Juliani 5 out of 5.

Room Tip: Book a room overlooking the bay it's worth the extra cost and teh extra space.

My husband and I spent a week there. Very nice Hotel. Had lovely balcony room overlooking the bay with all the boats. Well fitted and clean and nice to have tea and coffee. Breakfast was good - not very good! Asian restaurant did not impress; plenty of little restaurants nearby, mostly excellent. The situation was very convenient with buses outside.
We wished to hire a car for 3 days. After about 36 hours we were told by Reception that we were too old (75 and 81) and no one would hire us a car. So I went along to the Hilton where they have an AVIS office and came back with a car, which we both could drive. !!

Room Tip: Balcony rooms in front have wonderful views, but are a bit noisy with traffic at times.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel Juliani, a 4 star Hotel, is Malta’s only small design boutique hotel, and it is enviably located in the heart of St Julian’s. In fact, you’re never more than 25 minutes away from most parts of the island, including the beautiful baroque capital of Valletta. Originally a traditional seafront townhouse, the hotel has been meticulously converted to provide 44 rooms, an intimate setting and very personalised service to its guests. Today it remains a family-run establishment, and we are committed to ensuring you feel at home and well looked after. Each hotel room offers excellent facilities, fresh Mediterranean decor and plenty of space. Many also boast unobstructed sea views, and you will be able to watch the colourful fishing boats bobbing on the water from the comfort of your balcony or the rooftop swimming pool. Meanwhile, as a cosmopolitan commercial and entertainment district, St Julian’s surrounds you with many of the best restaurants, bars and shops that Malta has to offer. ... more   less
