“The perfect summer holiday...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

We have recently returned from a one week family holiday in Malta. This is the third year in a row that we have chosen the Westin Dragonara and we are already looking forward to doing exactly the same next year. Having travelled the world and stayed in many beautiful hotels non of them live up to this one. The staff are friendly and their performance is outstanding. From the reservation team (Kenneth), pool bar staff to the gym staff... The whole experience is perfect. The kids have great fun (and are treated like little princesses) and the spa, cocktail bar and beautiful spacious, clean bedrooms ensure that we all return relaxed and regenerated. 5 star definitely.

Room Tip: Family suite is perfect if you're travelling with young children.

The Terrace Restaurant, food is good and very friendly professional
serving staff. However never ask for a slice of medium carvery because
one of the chef is vile, rude, ignorant and arrogant, and certainly not
fit to be in contact with any customer. Suggest you stay away from
this restaurant at this hotel.

We had the privelage of attending a wedding at this beautiful hotel. The staff are outstanding and really will do anything they can to accomdate you. The food is of an extremely high standard and beautifully presented. The hotel grounds and rooms are of a high standard and in my opinion worth every penny, the views are just something else. We cannot praise the hotel enough. If anyone reading this is lucky enough to marry or attend a wedding at this hotel , i hope this review will help put your minds at ease as you will not be disappointed .

We traveled at the end of May with 2 kids, 7 and 10, and chose the Westin. The booking process was the most pleasant I had ever experienced - Eva in reservations went above and beyond to make sure our needs were met. We had a Luxury Bay Suite on the 3rd Level. Yes, it was a bit of a walk from reception - but nothing to complain about. The living room sofa was made out as a bed for the kids and the master bedroom was plenty large. It was an extremely large suite - and at a great price. Wireless all worked wonderfully, and the breakfast was all included.

One thing I would say about the suite is that things like the woodwoork need to be touched up - they are beginning to show the wear, similarly metal in rooms next to the sea tends to corrode - and this was happening in places. But the room was spotlessly clean (thank you housekeeping), everything was in perfect working order, and there were so many toiletries we had no idea what to do with them! Not sure that the bed we had was 'heavenly' as advertised...but this was not why I had booked the room!

George the Concierge was FANTASTIC! Booked a great private tour geared for the children. Would highly recommend doing this, as we saw close to everything in 1 day, then had lots of time to relax.

Admittedly this was a bit of the 'shoulder season' but we were disappointed that more restaurants at the hotel were not open - only 1 was open each night, and even it was fully booked for the first 3 nights of our stay. We ended up eating at a bunch of local restaurants, and while not inexpensive, the food was very good, and we had a great time walking 10 minutes there. Walking around the hotel felt extremely safe at night.

The pool area was just fine - the loungers nice. No real pool service - you had to go and get towels and go up to the bar. Not the service like a Ritz or Four Seasons, but at a fraction of the price, I am willing to go get my own towel. We did go to the Reef Club on the first day it opened. Clearly they were not ready for the opening, as my husband and I spent 30 minutes picking up shattered glass from along their very small beach so our children could play. We also had to get our own loungers, towels, etc. down to the beach. But that being said, the water was lovely and clear (not warm yet in May...) and we had a lovely day.

Do note, that this hotel is a good 20 Euro cab ride from Valletta and so long as you are willing to pay to go back and forth you will find it a convenient location. Great restaurants we ate at were Zeri's, Chapter One, and Malata.

I am sure the hotel is very different during high season - and the hotel was gearing up for this. But from what we experienced, the 5 star staff at this hotel make it a really great place to bring a family. We even celebrated our daughter's 10th birthday there and she was made to feel very special!

Room Tip: Bay Suite Rooms are great - very spacious, 326 is on the top, therefore gets lots of sun!

This was our first visit to Malta since it was on our list of "places to see" and we had some available time to go there! We chose the Westin because of Westin's reputation and previous experiences.

Whenever I go somewhere for the first time, I always check TripAdvisor reviews and read a few "excellent" reviews and then the "poor" and "terrible" reviews to get a sense on any recurring themes even amongst the best of hotels.

With that information in hand, I can generally say I have no idea what the people with the "poor" and "terrible" reviews were talking about. The 2 main criticisms or themes I had read had to do with the "age" of the hotel and the "selection" at breakfast.

First, I had absolutely no issue with the "age" of the hotel and even looked to see what the writers were talking about. The grounds are in excellent shape, the building is in excellent shape, our room was in excellent shape... so as far as I was concerned, any comment about the "age" were absolutely groundless.

Second, the breakfast. Not enough selection? Really?? There was something for almost any culture's taste and the selection was impressive. From the cold cereal selection to the fruit selection to custom-made omelets to hot-plate selections to bread selections to cold-plate selections to pastries to kid selections.... Anyone criticizing the selection has to be a very very picky eater indeed!

All of the staff were incredibly attentive and friendly. From the restaurant to the lounge to the concierge desk, everyone was always willing to help anytime we had a question or request.

There is, however, ONE observation/suggestion I would make; not a criticism, but a suggestion. The hotel is non-smoking, which to (predominantly) North American sensibilities is a must-have these days. Naturally. this means the smokers (of which there are still many) must go outside to indulge. Unfortunately, this means they can dominate the outside areas (i.e. lounge, pool) which forces non-smokers to inhale an inordinate amount of second-hand smoke, something many of us today find, frankly, offensive and incredibly socially unacceptable.

So my suggestion: At least divide the outside patio(s) between smoking and non-smoking areas. And make sure you put the smokers downwind (since it always seemed to be windy while we were on Malta!). I'd like to enjoy the fresh air and views as well, but without the need to inhale some other table party's fumes!

My husband and I spent 10 nights here in May, 2013 to visit family who live nearby. We are familiar with Westin accommodations and were told by locals that we would not be disappointed....and they were right! Go for the sea view. One of our travel mates paid for sea view and was given mostly a view of the tennis courts with sea to the side and the front desk went out of their way to change their room to improve the view when asked. For this and anything we asked them, it was service with a smile and with almost instant results. Everyone on staff was engaging and seemingly naturally polite. George at the concierge desk couldn't have been more helpful. I asked him to check the weather report for me and he printed out the entire forecast! Any time I called the front desk the phone was answered immediately. The breakfast buffet was incredible...anything you could possibly want and more and, again, the service was perfect. The hotel is off to the side of an extremely busy and crowded area of St. Julians and Paceville. We could not hear the noise from the hotel and the location somewhat insulates you...best stay on the sea side of the hotel to be sure, but it is there when you drive or walk, just a few blocks away.
The lobby/lounge area was beautiful and service again just perfect. The bar menu was very nice for a quick meal. The poolside restaurant offered a nice menu but order early as it takes quite a long time to get your order. Allwyn was an amazing staff member....friendly, funny and took care of any problems we had. The pools are not heated, nor is the jacuzzi. We asked and were told that they are never heated because the sun heats the water. We couldn't go in the water at all as it was a cooler week....have never heard of a cold jacuzzi....defeats the purpose I think. The indoor pool is tucked away behind the gym and is shallow and cold as well.
Chairs by the pool are plentiful as are towels. They do have special functions but they didn't interfere with us either by the pool or in the lobby. Elevators were instant...never had to wait. Laundry service is expensive which it typical in a hotel like this, but the service was fast and the laundry came in a basket wrapped in tissue paper! Bathroom was spacious, lots of hot water and good pressure but a small glass panel instead of a glass door or curtain made showering a bit messy with water on the floor every time. Maintenance came immediately and caulked the glass but water splashed outside the glass just by the process of showering. Ask for extra towels ahead of time in case this happens. The room was clean and stayed clean the entire time. Not many outlets to charge things...remember to bring an adapter. Two robes were provided and extra hangers provided immediately upon request. One entire outdoor area was closed due to renovations so we missed out on that. We did not eat at Quadro but ate twice at Palio's are were very pleased. Because of severe winds while we were there we did not get to enjoy sitting down by the sea or go in the water. There is a small sandy area but we were not able to use it because of the weather.
Steep daily charge for internet. If it is part of your package be sure it is taken off your bill. Free access in the lobby area. Feel free to contact me with questions. I know how important it is to be sure of a hotel, especially a more expensive one, before you book.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view and don't accept partial view if you are paying up for a good view. They are w...

12 of us visited for a week in May 2013 to celebrate a family birthday. The hotel was spotlessly clean, calm, well run and staffed by people who were professional and dedicated to making our stay memorable. The rooms were huge and all had decent views and caught the sun at some point in the day. Service was excellent and the rooms were serviced discretely and with great care. For example if you had a beer from the bar and left a beer glass in the room this was replaced with a clean one each evening.
Breakfasts were simply wonderful. The pool complex is spacious and the pool very clean - if a little bracing at 7am. The reef club was luxurious. Do take time to explore the complex and find out about the services and facilities as there are so many.
Drinks are very expensive - but you are paying for the service as well as the drink.
Overall it could not be better and we had a lovely break.

Room Tip: One facing the pool or a tower room
