“Excellent Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

Loved this hotel. Free parking is a big plus, all the different restaurants, 2 big beds in the room, choice of channels on tv, outdoor pool was great (spoilt by locals - parents yelling at children - I dozed off, and was woken up by a parent trying to shove her pushchair between my deck chair and hers - so I just left because I could not take it anymore - and this happened every day with the yelling and shouting and crying), indoor pool was ok, breakfast excellent. I also loved the sample shampoos, conditioner and soap in the room. The only downside is the internet - free internet in lobby but very expensive to use in room. The room that we had was facing the bar - it did not affect us because we actually went there so the noise did not bother us at all, but it would have been nicer to have a view on the swimming pool. But probably we would have had to pay extra because we got a standard room. Would go again definitely. Staff was great and always helpful.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

We stayed in the Westin dragonara in July 2012, the second leg of a two week vacation in Malta. I had really high hopes as the website and reviews were great.

We were very disappointed with hotel. The Friday night when we arrived, their on site club was playing ear splitting tunes until 3am. Great if your a couple - not great with a 4 year old. We phoned down to complain a number of times to be met with "oh you are the only people to complain - we will ask them to turn the music down". The next day we got talking to an American couple on the floor above who had said they to had also complained a number of times during the night. The staff were great the next morning and moved us to the other side of the hotel. But it's just not the type of experience you expect with a 5 star hotel. Especially when it's their own outdoor beach club.

The interior is lavish but the exterior and pool area is very disappointing - tired, pealing pink spayed concrete is not my idea of relaxing or 5 star.

But The biggest disappointment is the kids club. They charge an hourly rate! So this huge indoor area was completely empty every day. We had just come from the radisson blu where their kids clubs were completely free even in the evening so it was a big shock.

It's pretty much put me of booking any westin properties for family holidays in the future.

Room Tip: Definitely facing the pool not the beach club.

We organized a conference where delegates from different sites around the world came to Malta for this event. Excellent service, very good location. Very professional & friendly staff who also helped us with last minute requirements. Food was delicious. Rooms are very spacious, clean and fantastic sea views. I highly recomend this hotel.

Room Tip: Higher floors for a fantastic sea view:)

Dear martin j,

Greetings from the Malta and the Westin Dragonara Resort!

Thank you for your review following your stay with us. We are very happy that you have enjoyed the resort facilities especially the direct access to the sea. The resort indeed has a great location which is close to the centre of St. Julian’s and other restaurants, whilst still being cut off on a peninsula enjoying great sea views and close to the sea.

Whilst thanking you again for your comments, we trust to welcome you back to the property in the future

I organised a fund-raising dinner which was excellent. The food was good as well as the service. The event was held at the Reef Club which is the perfect setting for a summer evening. The banquet manager was very helpful and there was nothing they would not supply if possible. I would recommend the place/hotel for any conference event that one would like to organise

Let's write the positive things first: the location was good, the breakfast was great, the staff was mostly friendly, the gym was good and offered a range of classes (I did yoga a couple of times), the place was child friendly, the luxury bay suite we stayed in was spacious and nicely decorated and the bed was fantastic.

However, we encountered far too many problems during our stay. During the 12 days we were there we had to have the fridge, the oven, the tv and the dvd player changed as they were not working. The worst thing though was the air conditioning that kept switching off by itself. During the day it wasn't a huge problem as you just had to go and switch it back on but during the night this was a major annoyance as we - including our two year old - woke up several times a night sweaty and having to get out of bed to turn the air con on. After complaing about it for a couple of times we were asked to change rooms as they were unable to fix it. By that time we had already had our fridge, tv and dvd player changed so we said they had better make sure the air con in the new room worked as well as everything else. The end result was that we changed rooms but the new room had the same problem with the air con. We also had to have the oven changed only two hours after we moved in as it was not working even if we were specifically told that everything had been checked for us. By this time we were pretty angry and wanted to discuss some form of compensation as the quality we were getting was not in our opinion matching a five star standard that we were paying 4000 euros for. The most shocking out of all this was the way the general manager spoke to us in the meeting where we discussed these issues. First of all, he said that the air con was not working because "someone" had been turning it on and off too many times causing it to break down. He also said that it was a strange co-incidence that all of these problems should happen to us and none of the other guests had ever complained about anything. He was constantly interrupting me when I was speaking and at some stage literally shouting at us. He was also clearly lying about certain things such as no other guests complaing about the air con (Tripadvisor already had some reviews mentioning problems with air con) and about there not being any other five star suites with kitchen in the whole Malta we could switch to (we checked just one place after the meeting, Hilton, that had them). In the end, however, he agreed to give us some Starwood points and free half board for the four nights we had left at that stage.

My view on this - no-one obviously wants to deal with broken air con or other devices on their holiday but I understand there can sometimes be problems. Nevertheless, the way our complaints were handled was well and truly out of order - it is not ok to behave like that and blame your clients for causing the problems and afterwards just say that "you get some Starwood points and free half board" and expect people to be happy. The air con was fixed in the end - there were people working on it for two days after the meeting and it finally started to work. When I asked the director of operations what they had done to it, he said "nothing, it just all of a sudden started to work again". Makes me wonder whether that is the truth.

The problems mentioned above were the just the biggest ones, on the top of that there were some smaller ones but let's not go in there.

As a conclusion, I cannot really recommend this place for anyone and if we ever do go back to Malta (and we may do that as it was a nice place) we will definitely not be staying in Westin Dragonara.

Dear Minniemouse75,

Please allow me to thank you for your feedback following your stay at the Westin Dragonara Resort.

As you have well mentioned in your review, the resort enjoys a great location, close to the center of St. Julian’s whilst cut off on a peninsula. This feature of the resort gives our rooms great sea views, the Luxury Baysuites are in fact a few meters away from the sea. All the rooms at the resort indeed are equipped with the famous Heavenly Beds.

I thank you for mentioning the resort facilities, we are glad that you have enjoyed the classes at our fitness centre and our extensive breakfast selection, including a SuperFoods corner, promoting healthy eating whilst travelling. I hope that you have enjoyed the rest of your stay at our resort and that all the challenges were attended to.

With great concern it is regretted that we did not meet all your expectations during your stay with us. As we had discussed, we had investigated and monitored the air conditioning situation following your report which was found to be functioning normally.

Once again I thank you for your feedback, as it is though these comments that we can continue to improve

Be well
