“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

I usually try not to give negative reviews and be fair in my judgement; however I have to admit my husband and I were quite disappointed with the hotel. It’s not extremely cheap - comparable price to 5 star hotels in the area so you'd expect to feel like a valued customer. The George was not what I expect after boutique 4 star hotel.

The good things about the hotel are its:

+ location - short walk to Spinola Bay and Portomaso Marina, not far from the George's Bay and next door to Paceville, which we tried to avoid (just turn right when leaving the hotel). The bus stops are just around the corner and the Arcadia supermarket 2mins walk away from the hotel

+ room size - we had a junior suite which is approx. 40m2

+ modern decor

+ some aspects of the rooftop pool area - the view is great, and the whole area just looks good

+ Molton Brown toiletries

+ great cocktails by the pool

+ good communication with the staff PRIOR arrival

The cons:

- mould, mould, mould… that is something unacceptable. There was a black/green mould between shower and bathroom door and the area below the sink didn’t look nice either

- mould in the indoor pool – some parts (big areas) of the ceiling in the indoor pool area were black and mouldy

- after taking the shower the bathroom floor was flooded. Also, there is no handheld shower and no shower caps provided so it was difficult to take a quick shower without wetting your head

- AirCon was out of control. We had to slide open and close the balcony door approx. 3 times to have the AirCon working (there is a sensor on the balcony door). Then when we wanted to switch it off for the night (because it’s very loud and the temperature was fine without it) it was switching back on by itself. One night I got up 3 times to switch it off and it was back on after couple of minutes. Opening the balcony door wasn’t an option as it was too loud outside

- ladies toilet by the pool was out of order because the was no light for at least three days (I guess it was a bigger problem than just a light bulb). Not sure when/if it was resolved. There was absolutely no other light source there and after closing the door it was pitch black, so the ladies used the disabled toilets. One day the toilet was blocked and the water didn’t flush and there wasn't anyone to sort that out

- male shower by the indoor pool was out of order – there was no sign that you can’t use it but there were lose wires hanging from the ceiling and it looked like it’s was half way finished

- mixed feeling about the staff – they were all ok with one or two people being nice (no one was rude or anything like that) but you’d expect more personal feeling after the so-called boutique hotel. I felt that each small request was a hassle for the staff. We have emailed the hotel prior our arrival to ask for a kettle to have in our room. There wasn't one and we had to ask again after we arrived. It wouldn't bother me any other time but when you add all those small things it becomes annoying

- some aspects of the rooftop pool/bar area - It would be great if there was more than one member of the staff up there during the day to make sure there are towels available, make sure that the sunbeds are made available if someone leaves their towel on the sunbed for half of the day and doesn't show up. There are not enough sunbeds due to the lack of space, nobody's fault there. The pool area/bar would be a fantastic spot in the evening if the bar was open… The pool is available until 8pm and the bar closes even earlier around 7pm. I guess it’s because of the penthouse rooms just below the pool level

- the steam room by the indoor pool area was out of order and the sauna was barely warm with no option to make it any hotter

- on our first morning we’ve decided to try the breakfast but were very disappointed. For €30 euro you can have much better breakfast for couple of days in any coffee shop/restaurant in the area

- no room service. Since we didn’t eat breakfast at the hotel we had a nice coffee in the lobby each morning. It’s a shame you can’t order one to your room

- very poor Wi-Fi reception in the room. Good thing that we didn’t have to pay for it (complimentary Wi-Fi for booking the room directly on the hotel’s website). I wouldn’t want to pay for such a poor service. The Wi-Fi in the lobby and by the pool seemed to be much better

- on the day of our departure 15mins after check-out time I had a call from the reception that I should vacate the room. I was already packed but my husband had some problems with renting the car and was running few minutes late. I said I’ll be down by the reception as soon as I can and that I’m just waiting for him to help me with the luggage. 10mins later the cleaning lady said I need to leave the room because she has to start cleaning. I don’t blame her at all, she had to do her job and I was interrupting her but the whole situation just left the bad taste. It would be nice for someone to help me collect the luggage or at least suggest helping me with those

We had a fantastic time on Malta, we traveled around the island and visited Comino and Gozo, had some fantastic food in many of the restaurants in the area and enjoyed many activities the islands have to offer. The only mishap was the hotel, which I had high hopes for, even though some of the reviews were less than favourable.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013 via mobile

Stayed for 2 nights at end of September. The room was clean, spacious, but basic and bed very firm. Plenty of storage space. A/C didn't work properly as temp kept resetting from 16 to 21 C. Phone to reception was faulty.Got engaged signal all the time bar once.No tissues in room. No facilities for coffee making etc in room. Had to go down to bar downstairs each time to get hot water. Mini bar was empty: not a problem just an observation. Breakfast average. Waitress laid cutlery on table by putting her fingers on every eating surface rather than using handles;not very hygenic! Street outside was very noisy when we were there. Not hotel's fault! Maid left wife's nightdress on floor after cleaning room.
We would not stay here again.

I stayed a week in this hotel and liked it very much. Nice rooms, well cleaned, excellent food, and very performant staff. I cannot think of any negative aspect of my stay. Its situation is very good too to walk or to go to a nearby busstop. A perfect place to rest and relax!

I found this hotel to be generally well kept. The Spa could of benefitted from a lick of paint, and the details were sometimes forgotten but all in all it is a very clean, comfortable and good looking Hotel.

My only dig would be that parking was not free and added a significant cost to the stay. Despite being on the Paceville strip and being moved to a street side room the noise was not significant.

Room Tip: Get a courtside room as there is less noise and the street view is nothing spectacular.

A safe option in a fantastic location. We had a great 2 weeks in Malta which enabled us sufficient time to experience the hotel in the fullest.

The bedroom was modern and simple but the bathroom came with its problems - a leaking flushing point in the wall and a blocked sink drain. The shower was lovely and big.

The staff were a mixture of friendly, grumpy and somewhat rude which was reflected across the island over our stay so not a true reflection of the hotel.

The food was hit and miss but far from the quality that would expect from the prices you pay. Our first experience set the tone when we asked for a salad and a baguette (at the pool bar) from which the response was they had no bread, mozzarella, parma ham or any ingredients that both our requests needed. They then had to send someone across the road to buy these from a shop. We were then expected to pay 10 euros for a bowl of lettuce leaves and ball of mozzarella.

As it was my 30th birthday mid trip we decided to book a breakfast on the day, which had to be done the day before with reception to get the lower price (as we did not include this in our overall package). On arrival a rude lady (the restaurant manager we assume) tells us there was no booking made (even though there had been and confirmed with a guy at reception the day before) and made us out to be liars. After too-ing and fro-ing to the reception and back we got the problem sorted (as it was an error on the reception side), but no apology from the lady which was a little upsetting really as she was rather unnecessarily rude. The breakfast in the end was pretty poor so not worth the hassled in the first place and absolutely nothing other than baked beans fro the vegetarians.

The pool facilities and view were simply brilliant and our favorite part of the hotel.

The spar was also very good and the staff were not only helpful but very professional in the treatments and aftercare.

My last gripe of the hotel is the fact that it felt you were being charged for everything. To watch any TV that was not in german, or news you had to pay for. The wifi was only free on the pool deck which was good and reception lobby but could never get the reception one and again in the room, you had to pay for it. It would be good for the hotel to advise this in the booking stages and be a little more transparent so as to know what is include and what isn't.

Other than this the hotel was a safe option and provided us with a good base as the location was amazing and central. Will definitely be returning to the island but not the hotel unfortunately.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony as the courtyard rooms are not very private.

A warm welcome was given in the reception as the staff were great and extremely polite.

The service both in the outdoor pool, breakfast buffet and spa were helpful and always with a smile.

A quite relaxing and quiet break even though it is in the heart of Paceville.

I would give this hotel a big A+++ and highly recommend a stay with The George.

Keep it up and I will see you on my next break.
