My husband and I stayed at Hotel L’Aproddo for 4 nights from 23-26 September 2012, as part of a tour group. We had a very nice large room and balcony, overlooking the lake, the pagoda end of the hotel. Paying the supplement for a lake view room was definitely worth the extra money. Others in our party did not, and their rooms were darker and had no view except that of the busy road. The room had obviously been refurbished recently with modern furniture. In the wardrobe there was a safe and a fridge. We did not have to pay extra for the use of either. It took us a while to work out how to open the balcony doors that ran the length of the room, but when we did we found a large balcony containing a table and 2 chairs. The view either through the doors or from the balcony itself, was beautiful. The hotel is situated right on Lake Orta, with gardens, pool and sunbathing area between the building and the lake. The busy main road runs the other side of the hotel. Our room was at the end of the building and consequently there was some traffic noise when we were on the balcony, but once the balcony doors had been shut, any noise was shut out too. Unlike a previous contributor who stayed at L’Aproddo a couple of nights after our party had left, we did not experience any human noise. Other members of our party also commented on how quiet the hotel was.
The refurbished rooms used a key card system of entry. This failed on our last night due to a power cut. Reception provided us with manual keys and we were able to go in and out of our room OK. However, the air conditioning fan was affected by the power problems and until the effects of the power cut on the hotel power system were sorted out by a technician the fan could not be turned off. This situation continued for a little over an hour before being rectified. Someone from reception came to our room later to check that all was OK once more – maybe because my husband had notified reception that we had the problem with the fan.
Our biggest criticism of the hotel was of food and drink service – both for the evening meal and at breakfast. Meal service in the evenings was very, very, very slow with very long gaps between courses. It was generally felt by members of our party that there simply wasn’t enough members of staff on duty. The breakfast service was haphazard, although the buffet itself was good enough. Coffee/tea arrived promptly on a couple of mornings, whereas other mornings none came until we had almost finished breakfast…..and then only as a result of constant asking (even our Tour Manager was unable to get any). Milk seemed to be another particular problem…..none being put out for the cereals on the first day, and the haphazard arrival with tea or coffee on others.
The person behind the bar seemed unfamiliar with the drinks listed on the drinks list, and cocktails were definitely out!
There is a landing stage in the hotel grounds from where a boat can be caught to the Isle de San Giulio, and the village of Orta. Both of these we felt were well worth a visit. One can also walk along a lake path from the hotel to the village of Pettenasco, where there are several small shops, including a cheese shop and a greengrocers. We were able to buy rolls in the cheese shop and have them filled with tasty ham and cheese. Everyone we met in Pettenasco were helpful and friendly and very tolerant of our English indecision!
We enjoyed our stay at Hotel L’Aproddo, despite poor weather (can’t blame the hotel for that though!), but found the poor service in the restaurant very frustrating.
It is well worth paying the extra for a lake view room

we really thank you for the full and detailed report about our hotel, we regret that the breakfast service and the restaurant have caused frustration, usually it is not our custom to let too much time pass between one course and another, but in Italy it is custom to enjoy dinner in a slightly longer time than lunch, especially if it is on a pleasure trip in the company of friends, this could be just a different point of wiev.
Our service includes a breakfast buffet where there are cold cuts, cheeses, vegetables, fruit syrup and fresh fruit, pastries baked fresh every morning, yogurt, milk, cereals, breads etc, the waiters were held and serve hot drinks, I apologize if the staff was not so quick to serve you, normally and especially for groups we are ready with warm drinks a couple of minute before the fixed time for group to sit for breakfast.
We renew thanks for the consideration received and we hope to see you again soon to ensure all our attention for a truly perfect stay.
