4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2011

Stayed in this hotel on a tour of the Lakes. This was our first hotel. Rooms slightly shabby, the bathroom had a badly broken toilet seat however, this was replaced in the 3rd day of our stay. Beds could have been better. The food was reasonable. I'm vegetarian and don't eat fish but they managed to produce something nice for me eat at dinner. Breakfast basic continental.

The only big gripe i have was the badly lit stairs. We had to go up 2 flights to reach our room and this was badly lit with no handrails part of the way. My friend does not get around easily so this was a minus.

A very nice location though, right on the edge of the lake with lovely gardens where one can relax. The bar was a bit depleted. We wanted a Pims, but they had run out.

I had read bad reviews of this place so was pleasantly surprised.
Good welcome at Reception and shown to my room .All rooms have balconies. Great location and the boat excursion to the Island stops right outside the hotel.
Excellent restaurant though pricey. Good car parking. Certainly more than adequate for a few nights

I booked this hotel for a weekend escape from the heat of Milan and it was lovely! Received a an excellent last minute rate, I did not have a Lake view but a lovely room with nice quiet balcony. The room was very clean and seemed to be newly decorated, the bed was comfortable and the wireless gratis. (much appreciated) The real gem of the hotel is the multi-lingual staff, who are quite charming and hospitable, especially the ladies at the front desk and the gentlemen in the restaurant. Breakfast was very nice with many good things to choose from and the food at dinner was delicious, particularly the cheeses and desserts! The pool was clean and very well maintained, and the young man who staffed the walk-up bar worked so hard to take care of everyone quickly and with a smile. The in-room literature recommended some stunning walks which I really enjoyed. For me this was true Italian hospitality in a beautiful location! Two things I might mention, the shower was a bit small and I was confused as to who/how to tip, especially at the bar/restaurant because the it was billed directly to the room. I highly recommend this lovely and charming hotel!

We had a lovely weekend at this hotel. We had a suite facing the lake and garden which was perfect: even with a balcony. The hotel is directly on the lake which is nice and peaceful, though as others have mentioned, there is a main road at the front of the hotel and I would not have liked to have had a room facing that way. The garden is very inviting, including a large unheated swimming pool, which, even in midsummer, was a little on the cold side!!
The hotel staff were helpful and pleasant and the breakfasts were ok
It would be difficult to stay here without a car, since the roads are busy and there are very few pavements . There is a boat, which, certainly in summertime, stops at the hotel once a day for round trips of the lake.
All in all, I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Looking out from the wide picture window across Lake Orta, at sunrise or sunset, when the weather is bright or even somewhat dull, reminds you what you are paying for at the Hotel L’Approdo in Pettensaco. This can be a magically changing location and always idyllic. There is obviously some effective training scheme for members of staff who greet you smilingly and were never less than helpful. And, for those who like lounging by the pool, the hotel has one, beautifully maintained each morning by a young man who then provides the food and the drink for the rest of the day, always courteous and helpful. He deserves more money, whatever he is paid.

However, there are some concerns. The hotel charges highly for the location and so it was good to know that you can save a little by paying at the time of booking. However, definitions are important. ‘Superior room’ does not suggest a dark space up a dull staircase with worn carpet, equipped with miniature shower, doorless cupboards and the instructions to run the taps for five minutes ‘if you want hot water’. For ‘superior’ read ‘what we’ve got left when the tour buses have been accommodated.’ Nor does ‘garden view’ conjure a vista of steel fire escapes, artificial grass stretched over the flat roofs and, distantly, a miniature football pitch on artificial turf. ‘Garden’, it is not. (And no, I wasn’t being mean but, at the time of booking, the hotel had no rooms with lake views.) Given comments by previous reviewers about similar experiences, I suspect that the hotel has heard this before and so it was good to know that we would be moved to a lake view – ‘We like to help when people stay for some days’ and ‘No, no extra cost, but I just need to confirm with my manager’. And move we did. The bubble bath did not bubble, in fact it did nothing except fill exceedingly slowly and there was no shower, but given the willingness to help it would have been churlish to complain. And the view was indeed spectacular. Sad, then, that £60 was added to a final and not insignificant bill for ‘a two-day upgrade’. In fairness and after an exchange of views, the sum was removed but the magic had gone.

I do wonder about the L’Approdo, which claims four stars but lacks the style and comfort that you somehow expect with this rating. The genuinely ‘superior room’ was newly furnished with a decent bed, but really lacked any other furniture and those soft touches in furnishing and bathroom supplies that just lift a hotel into a higher grade. Perhaps four stars in Italy are three stars elsewhere, that is what my Italian friend suggested. It would be good to know.

Did I say that the breakfast was good and the staff smiley, because it was and they were?

L’Approdo is doing many things right, particularly with its staff training. It’s a pity that somewhere higher, the management seems to have lost the basic requirement, to be straight with customers and not to be silly with descriptions. After all, the location sells this place – or should do. Maybe I’m starting to realise why it was not as full as it should or could have been.

Hotel staff, with thee exception of one very welcoming nothing was too much trouble for them. Restaurant and bar staff very friendly, poor Alfredo took a lot of teasing from our party and took it all in good faith. Food was not exceptional, expected more from this 4 star hotel. A little bit grubby areas. Would I stay again yes, but I only if they could guarantee the sun shining rained for the whole of our four day stay.
