We drove off the beaten track to Burton's because of the reviews on trip advisor. We were not disappointed!
First and foremost, this isn't a place for those who like swanky hotels with all the amenities. If you like 5 star resorts, then you'd better off skipping the bumpy raod into town and traveling elsewhere. You won't find a pool, a hot tub, flat screen TV's (been a while since I've seen a tube TV with rabbit ears) or glamorous accommodations. Internet is intermittent and you'll probably need to sit outside the office to connect. There is no cell phone service in Bay St. Lawrence so be prepared to be off the grid.....all part of the charm of this place. You will be reminded what it's like to live outside the rat race where life is quiet, uncomplicated and simple.
What you will find at Burton's is a clean and comfortable motel with breath taking views and sunsets that will burn themselves into your memory for life. You will also find the nicest owners and hosts you ever hope to meet. They'll happily recommend a VHS movie from their collection that you can play on the VCR in your room (for those under the age of 16, your parents can explain what all that means)!! They'll also be happy to set up the washer toss game for you! Just don't ask them how to connect your iPad to the internet. That is quite simply something this town doesn't do!
The rooms are clean and well equipped with basic kitchen facilities. The beds feel like your sleeping at a friends house. They are comfortable and the sheets are soft and cozy, not bleached and crispy like most hotel / motels.
Want some advice on things to do? Just ask Debbie who will most likely check you in. You'll learn all about the local fishery and where to get lobster or fresh crab at a fraction of price you'd expect to pay. They'll even help you cook it up....try that at a fancy schmancy hotel!
Some one said in another review that the rating this hotel has of being the best in Cape Breton is a bit of a stretch. I disagree. "Best" is subjective. To me, if you really like the place and enjoy your stay, that's how you determine the best. There is a reason Burton's ranks so high. It isn't the amenities or the luxurious accommodations, it's the feeling it leaves you with and the smile it puts on your face.
Sunset hint - you will see two chairs on the hill beside the hill, it's where people will head to watch the sunset. Instead of the chairs, walk past them and you will see a path on the right cut through the bushes. Take the very short (maybe 100ft) walk up that path and you will come to a clearing on the top of a hill. Spectacular views!!!
