“Excellent wedding venue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2010

We chose to get married on Valentine's Day 2010 at Mellington Hall and were extremely pleased with our choice. Everything went very smoothly and we honestly can't think of anything that could have been better. We lost count of the number of guests who said that the food was the best that they had ever had at a wedding. We were well looked after and the atmosphere was just right, whether relaxing by the open fire, drinking in the bar or chatting in the private lounge that was set aside for us. We would thoroughly recommend Mellington for anyone looking for a wedding venue.
For anyone looking for a hotel, the rooms were very comfortable and well appointed, especially the Mellington Suite. We had family and friends staying in other rooms and everyone was satisfied; the family rooms were great for those with children.

Though we found the staff friendly we found that the service left something to be desired. One evening we were unable to enjoy our drinks seated in front of the log fire as the area had been taken over by a couple of dozen noisy teenagers, probably from the adjacent caravan site. Our first evening meal was OK, but the second evening's meal and the breakfasts were overcooked. We've had better experiences in a Little Chef!! The view over the caravan park from some of the more expensive rooms is not what you would expect, the TV picture was poor and the range of channels limited. Altogether disappointing for what they charge.

We went to Mellington for Valentine's Weekend. It was a great choice, set in the middle of the countryside with amazing views. We had a very warm welcome and were shown to our suite at the front of the hotel overlooking the hills around Montgomery. We were given a family suite at the same price as a double. The room was spacious,a huge bed with lots of original wooden furniture a large sofa and massive tv.There was a great selection on the hospitality tray .There were bottles of water and a small bottle of wine as well.
The bathroom was equally as good with a separate shower unit. The only downside was the lack of shower gel and shampoo, but there was plenty of everything else.I think it must've been forgotten. The towels could've been larger but there were bathrobes provided.
The meal we had was excellant and well priced at £30pp for 4 courses. The breakfast was superb, good quality and well cooked.Although we didn't have a Sunday lunch this time, they are well worth the travel.
We will definetely stay here again for a special occasion.

We booked Mellington Hall Hotel for our wedding venue in May 2009. We went to see it because it kept appearing in search results as "the Jewel of the Marches" and on investigation their rates were very reasonable. I would list it as the single best decision we made in relation to our wedding plans. We arrived for our appointment with the wedding organiser in fantastic snowy scenery to a wonderfully Gothic building in the middle of beautiful Welsh countryside. On walking into the reception area, there was a full fire blazing (not sure what the previous review meant by "imitation fires" I can assure you the fire in reception is very real) and an even warmer reception from the staff. We had not actually booked for lunch and the kitchens were closing but our requests for a meal were quickly and happily accomodated and assurances were given that there was no rush, to enjoy our food and they would be ready to guide us round whenever we had finished. Which we did, as the food was great.

On being guided around the hotel the decision was quickly made to book it as our wedding venue. I have seen reviews for this hotel that describe it as shabby; it's not, the communal areas simply have a lived in feel that make it feel as comfortable as your own home. The dining rooms are extremely atmospheric-especially the panelled dining room, but the room where we had our ceremony wedding breakfast also is very light with good views of the countryside and a roaring (and not imitation?) fire. However, the bedrooms are modern and decorated individually to the standard you would expect of a modern country boutique hotel. Bathrooms were clean with excellent facilities. I can speak for all the rooms because I was shown them all by the staff there, as we were booking out the entire hotel for family and friends for our wedding night.

So, to recap-food-excellent. Rooms-excellent. Staff-exemplary. To finish I would say this. The hotel is described as the "Jewel of the Marches" but the real "jewel" in it's crown is its staff. Nothing was too much trouble for Kim our wedding planner, or any of the staff there including all household and bar staff. They dealt with even the most ludicrous request, even tours of the bedrooms so members of family could pick the one they wanted and dealt with every detail for us from cake to flowers to decorations to last minute menu changes with a smile and consummate professionalism. The family orientated attitude means that I am still in touch with staff there now and will continue to visit Mellington for as long as I am able.

In summary-you can't please all of the people all of the time, but if you want a personal experience and true customer service with a hotel that is welcoming and comfortable, Mellington beats them all.

We were extremely disappointed when we walked through the doors of Mellington Hall. Having looked at the website we were expecting a boutique hotel with log fires, a nice cosy bar area and elegant restaurant but instead we were welcomed to a hotel that was very chintzy, cold and drab. It could be made to be amazing but instead mis matched furniture, plastic flowers and immitation fires surround you. The bar area can only be described as looking like a social club with the old and tatty red velvet bench seating going around the room with tired looking chairs and tables. The fire in the bar was not on so it was freezing and there was no warming atmosphere or life to this place at all.
Yes we were offered a good bed, breakfast and dinner rate but maybe that said it all.
We checked in and checked out within an hour of arriving. Don't be fooled by the great website and the boutique wording as this is not what you get at all!
Extremely disappointing and ruined our day!

The popularity of the boutique term and concept has led to some confusion about the term. Boutique hotels are typically unique properties described as intimate, usually luxurious or quirky environments. Boutique hotels differentiate themselves from larger chain/branded hotels by providing personalised accommodation and services/facilities. All of which Mellington Hall Hotel is.
Mellington Hall is a small family run business with ten individually designed en-suite rooms. We pride ourselves on the 'home from home' feel that surrounds you from the moment you arrive to the time you leave.

It is sad and disappointing when a guest leaves us disappointed but even more so when on check out they say, only that the hotel is just not what they are looking for, but then leave comments like the above. Mellington Hall has NO immitation fire surrounds or plastic flowers!!

Admittedly on the above day the main hall area may have looked, for a short period of time slightly mis-matched, this was because we were in the middle of removing our old sofa's and furniture to make way for our newly delivered ones. Had the above guests stayed only an extra hour they would have seen the final finish to our newly refurbished hall area.

With the new colour scheme of creams, beige and teal blue, glass coffee tables and soft to the foot deep pile scatter rugs, the hall gives an immediate feel of cosyness, finished off with added warmth of our REAL open log fires.

Kim and everybody at Mellington Hall couldn’t do enough for us. On the day of the wedding everything seemed calm and relaxed and Kim and Vanessa were both very helpful. We had our ceremony in the William Morris Suite which was beautiful with the candles lit by the fire place very Romantic. This continued through the whole day in the room, the transformation from day to evening was amazing. The food was absolutely delicious and we chose a menu where your guests can choose what they want on the day, very impressive and the guests were amazed at the standard of food and the service that Lee and his team provided, my family actually said that it was all very fairytale and the best wedding they had ever been too! We were made to feel like royalty all day. All of our guests stayed in the rooms and I have to say that they were all outstanding and individual at the same time, the Mellington Suite was AMAZING with that great 4 poster bed and amazing Jacuzzi bath oh and not forgetting his and hers sinks. I can’t thank Mellington Hall enough for what they did for us we had the best day of our lives and I wouldn’t have chosen anywhere else to get married.

We got married here earlier this year. We had a smallish guest list (60 to day, and about 100 for evening) and it was perfect: nice and intimate and relaxed. The food was very good, and the collection of small rooms rather than one big room meant that the older people in the party could distance themselves from the disco! The building and grounds really give a wow factor and we have some fantastic photos taken of the day. The honeymoon suite is just amazing - i have never seen anything like it before!! Perfect day - and all our guests are still talking about it!
