“Afternoon tea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

We visited Mellington Hall on a spur of the moment voucher deal.
So pleased we did.
We were given a warm welcome on arrival and made to feel at home straight away.
After very relaxing drinks in the bar we were treated to a delightful afternoon tea.
The hotel is warm and inviting. The staff are courteous and efficient.
There was a wedding reception underway when we arrived and it was nice to see how well things seemed to be organised and how well everyone was looked after.
The decor is very tasteful and the decorations for Christmas added even more warmth to an already inviting hotel.
We shall have no hesitation in making a return visit.

I recently took up an offer on Travel Zoo for lunch at Mellington Hall Hotel, Church Stoke, having first check out their site; I thought that looks like a nice treat. How wrong I was.
To say the food was like sloppy school dinners would be an insult to school dinners. My chicken breast was served up on what looked and tasted like orange gloop (it could have been baby food), dolloped on a plate which was far too small to accommodate the food, I guess to make it look a lot. On top of which was something which passed for a sauce. It was served with what looked like one or two sticks of vegetables. My Husband had the Belly pork which was all bone, gristle and burned to a crisp (what there was of it that is) served with a very few oily potatoes and those stick vegetables. I think this revolting concoction was especially reserved for people on the Travel Zoo offer as I did notice the table next to us had shank of lamb and a selection of vegetable severed separately. For £19.50 for two it was disgraceful; I’m only please we were not charged the £22 per head. I would like to add that this price only included starter and main course; we did not bother to waste any more money on trying a dessert. I thought special offers were to enticed customers, quite the opposite in fact.

We went to Mellington Hall as 2 couples on a voucher deal (a weekend without the kids!) It was lovely relaxing break. We spent a lot of time just sitting by the open fires either in the hall / reception or the bar area. The rooms are individually furnished and we enjoyed looking round at the other rooms which were open. Have to mention how clean the rooms / bathrooms were - sparkling and white!

We chose to eat in the restaurant for the first night and had a beautifully cooked meal. We had bar meals for the second night and the meal was good but not as good as the first night.

The weather was appalling, but we still dragged the lads out on a 2 mile walk, coming back a lovely warm hotel room was lovely though!

Overall I enjoyed the break, but I wouldn't want to take the kids - this is more the sort of place you go for a lovely quiet break - which we got!

Stayed here for one night on a voucher deal, which included champagne cream tea and breakfast.

Hotel is located in a remote area, ideal for enjoying the peace and quiet and wildlife.

Nice welcome from receptionist and after checking into our room, enjoyed the cream tea sitting in one of the small dining rooms, complete with log fire.

We stayed in "Church Stoke", which although fairly small, was comfortable and well equiped. On downside, I did get rather cold as heating in room was only on for a short time in the early evening. Bathroom included heated towel rail. Complimentary Wifi was available throught hotel, but poor signal in our room.

The breakfast was one of the best we had enjoyed anywhere.

Nice walks through hotel grounds, which includes a holiday park with static and touring caravans. Overall a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Consider upgrading to a suite

We stayed for 2 nights 7th & 8th November.
Beautiful looking Victorian gothic house.
On arrival greeted by a roaring log fire and spent most of the afternoon sitting in front of it with a good value Champagne afternoon tea.Not many staff around but the lady receptionist couldn't do enough to help, tending the fire, serving drinks and looking after us very well.
We ate there both nights and the food was lovely, both the restaurant and bar menus had a good variety on offer and the breakfast was first rate.
We stayed in the Montgomery room which was very spacious with a nice big double bed, a small settee and TV.There was a separate bedroom with 2 single beds.
The bathroom again was spacious with a bath and separate shower.
We had a good nose around as there were a couple of unoccupied rooms with doors open all of which looked fabulous- especially the Mellington Suite.
Some areas of the hotel such as the bar could be brought a little more up to date but it didn't put us off.
All in all had a very relaxing and enjoyable time.A great place to meet up with friends and relatives.

Room Tip: Montgomery room was very spacious

There is no doubt - the building itself is stunning and the location (apart from the infernal static caravans everywhere) is remarkable. The long, winding drive up from the main road and complete silence are also truly remarkable.

The problems with Mellington Hall occur when it starts being a hotel - It feels like its been starved of any decent investment for a long time. Our room which was sold on the phone as being a "suite" was actually an averaged sized room with a 20 year old settee in the middle of it. The bathroom was freezing and consequently everything dripped with condensation when the shower was used. The television was so ugly and old it was a masterful show of self control that stopped me hurling it out of the beautiful stone mullioned window.
The food was again very average. I'm no big "foodie" but even I could tell the chef was not at the top of his game. The ice cream that accompanied my desert was little better than Asda "smart price" - maybe it was?
The staff are nice enough, like the rest of the hotel experience they are fairly un- remarkable. They certainly aren't false, if anything they all seem rather tired of the whole place.

The roaring open fire is a big plus, as is the nice bar which does actually have local ale on tap.

This place needs some cash injected into it. And there lies the problem - not a good enough hotel so people won't return therefore no cash.

Give it a go - you'll probably feel the same as me when you've left though. At least you will have helped pay the chef's wages for another week.

Room Tip: Maybe try one of the static caravans dotted around the once lovely gardens.

Dear Mr 'Jones'.
We hope you had a safe journey back to Chirk.
Thank you for your review but with you being a novice to the site we feel we should advise you that Trip advisor is a site for unbiased holiday reviews and it should not be abused or used to put petty or ridiculous comments.
Our Kerry suite is beautifully furnished room & can be viewed on our website accommodation section. We can assure you the sofa it boasts is far from reaching its 20th Birthday!!
We're extremely sorry you felt the TV was 'ugly' and while we note that it is not a flat screen fixed to the wall we are not sure visual appreance alone is reason to ' hurl' it from a window!!
This point along with your estimated age of our sofa sums up your entire review.
We thank you for your concerns that you felt we, the staff, may be feeling ' tired of the whole place' but yet again you couldn't be further from the truth. As a family run establishment we give 110% all day every day in our constant strive to provide the best service possible. We will always listen to constructive criticism & therefore ask if you feel you have useful & beneficial comments to please contact us direct.
We're sorry you experienced problems with the bathrooms heating which lead to condensation. This was rectified on your departure by a flick of a switch which you may have mistakenly switched off in the bathroom.
If you are to refer to the beautiful holiday homes which are situated in the grounds to the rear of the hall as infernal please give your reasons for them being such a nuisance to you. Had this guest taken the time to explore the gardens & lake then he may have been aware that the park is a privately owed park & homes can therefore not be rented/hired for short breaks. Due to the nature of the park peace & tranquility is maintained throughout the year.
We are shocked & if not slightly appalled knowing that this guest who is, himself, a director of a cleaning company should be unprofessional enough to make pointless financially related comments. This guests may have decided not to return in the future but many many of our guests do.

It's a very old-fashioned hotel, lots of lace and pictures of ballerinas in the rooms, a gloomy fish tank in the reception and full of creaky floorboards. But, it does have a lot going for it, the countryside is spectacular, the staff are friendly and relaxed, non of that corporate politeness that is so clearly false, the bed was very comfortable and the breakfast great.

The main problem is, it doesn't feel particularly well maintained and the building is in need of TLC. I didn't notice the constant piped music until I was in my room whistling Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper and the point was forced home at breakfast when I had to endure pan-pipe power ballads. The bath had seen better days and the TV in the room was older than me and only played BBC1, the room kettle was so furry I had to skip using it, and I'm not particularly fussy when it comes to stuff like that, but it looked like a teddy bear had been buried in it.

I love these old buildings, the roaring fires, the countryside views and the crumbling masonry are great but it just needs to drag itself into the 21st century and switch of the Richard Marx and buy a flat-screen.
