“Trying to hard to be luxury but failing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2014

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon and were underwhelmed. Everything is just a bit weird... Strange bathroom and strange decor. We weren't told on arrival that we have to pre-order dinner by early afternoon so when we turned up at the bar/restaurant early evening we were too late for dinner and had to go out to another restaurant that night. For the price just not worth it - if it had been half the price we would have felt it was value for money. Clean and generally nice service.

We opted to stay in the beach front villas. Orginally booked 3 however reduced to 2 as in each Villa there are 2 queen beds & a bed settee. Plenty of room to move and sleep! We had 2 adults and 3 young adults (17-24) Great air conditioning which is a must.
These Villas I think were the best. We had a power outage one evening and the management kindly upgraded us into a suite for the evening at NO additional cost... a great service.
The suites are lovely, however you cant walk off your doorstep into the ocean as you can with the Beach front villas and to me...Samoa is about experiencing the uniqueness mother nature. Sunrises amazing as you walk out into the calm clear water from your Fale.
Very eco friendly and loved the rustic charm of the villas/Fale.
Reading back on some comments...yes there are ants...we are in the tropics on the beach in a fairly under developed area of Samoa so yeap there are ants...but they aren't a problem if you don't leave food around. Yes there are some finishing touches that need to be done but it is all in keeping with the Samoan authentic experience. If you want 5 Star with all the trimmings then go elsewhere. This is more like beach bach wonderland.
Service was friendly and helpful.
Kayaks can be hired for 30 tala a day plus snorkelling gear flippers 10 tala & googles etc 15 tala.
Breakfast was small but adequate. Paw paw, coconut & banana with amazing Samoan home baked bread! Bread has no preservatives and was divine! You can order standard breakfast meals at an additional cost.
Simple food the way it used to be without genetic tampering. Main meals wonderful too. Tuna steaks and chicken/pork. Beef is scarce on the Island.
Umu and Fai Fai night was terrific and a must to experience. Oka (raw fish) was our favourite.
Take plenty of mosquito repellent for evenings outside and sunblock for the day.
Nibbles should be taken too as there is not a lot to purchase on the island except bananas, coconut, paw paw and packet noodles :-).
Stevensons do have a beach bar for cooked foods.
Alcohol is fairly cheap in NZ standards :-)
You just need to go there not expecting 5 star but instead a Beautiful relaxing Samoan beach experience. Walk slow....swim with the tropical fish at your doorstep...learn the language from the friendly staff....and simply enjoy soak up the wonder of a simplistic lifestyle.
I will defiantly go back.
Any questions...Im happy to help.

Room Tip: Beach front villas. These are more like NZ baches with unique showers outside. Tip..put a chair unde...

Stayed here last year and had such an awesome stay. The beach front Fale was perfect. Wake up in the morning take five steps and you are swimming in the pristine waters. Go and have a delicious breakfast, come back and have another swim. The service was impeccable, staff were beautiful people. Fale's, restaurant and surrounding area clean and tidy.

We went to a local church service as one of the staff went there and everyone was so welcoming.

Driving around Savai'i and Apia it may not be five star compared to other resorts and I think that is what we liked the most. It is boutique and has everything you need.

We stayed for 3 tranquil nights in a beachfront Euro Fale and were impressed with the eco-friendly construction. Brilliant idea to use lava rocks for the walls and the bathroom. Excellent concept to build with the natural rocks/ materials which are in abundance on the island instead of using imported products. Our Euro fale was very clean and the beds have a mosquito net suspended overhead.
A box of mosquito coils was provided and we appreciated these - this is practical in the South Pacific.

Their breakfasts fail to meet the standard for a resort. On our small plates there was HALF of a banana, 2 thin slices of papaya and a sliver of hard coconut. This is Samoa - bananas and papaya are in such abundance...why the meager rations at Stevensons? Like the other reviewer said, we expected a feast of tropical fruit....or at least a large plateful.

The kitchen staff/ cooks need to be educated about guests from northern climates like Canada or Europe, they need to know we do not have papaya and it is a special treat for us. They need to be taught we greatly appreciate and desire the tropical fruits when we come to the South Pacific.

We were so hungry we went down the road to where villagers are selling baskets full of papayas at the little roadside stands and purchased our own five papayas, so inexpensive!
Then we opened some coconuts from the palms on the beach, because a Samoan at our previous location taught us the skills needed to open coconuts the easy way.

Emily, is the new manager from Australia and she responded to our gluten-free request to have 2 poached eggs instead of the toasted white bread. Thank you, Emily! She also talked with the kitchen staff and on the next mornings our plates were served with a whole banana...but extra papaya was never found.

The sound of the surf breaking on the reef at night was wonderful, we can truly appreciate the warm ocean and the acoustics of the surf because we do not have this at home.
It was brilliant marketing strategy to offer a half-price discount during low season, this made it very attractive to choose Stevensons! Again, thank you Emily.
Other than the meager rations, which hopefully will improve, we will refer our friends/family to Stevensons.

We were aware it was the quiet season when I booked weekend accommodation for half price. The lovely reception doubled as the hotel ambassador who showed us to our room, the beach side bar restaurant where dinner is served, pointed out the direction of where our breakfast would be served from 7:30am and left us to carry our own luggage to the room. I had chosen the green themed room thinking it would tie in with the natural surrounding. However, was not impressed by the green lighting in the walls, the small hole in the wall for the fridge and tea making facilities, dark bathroom and sharp stones in the stone feature shower.
We were both tired and hungry so we left to check out the best pizza place on the island which is a 10 minute drive away. We returned satisfied and sleepy. We awoke at 8:30pm to find there is no outdoor lighting to guide us to the beachside restaurant so we used the torch app on our smart phones. There is about 2 metres between our front porch and the edge of the cliff where it drops off to the beach about 5 metres below. Lucky we had our torches. Garden lights would have been better. We jumped in our car and drove back to the direction of the pizza place where we noticed Le La Goto resort. Fortunately, for us we had 20 minutes before their kitchen closed.
The following morning I woke up at 6:30am. Took photos of the beautiful sunrise from the beach and strolled to find natural water springs. At 8 o'clock I visited the restaurant expecting a feast of tropical fruits and fresh bread for breakfast. However I found a deserted place with only one person at the bar who explained the lady with the key to the kitchen had not arrived yet. Went back to my room grateful for the pack of local biscuits I had bought along the way.
We checked out. I didn't bother asking for a discount. Staff was aware of the trouble I had with breakfast. She did not offer a discount and I did not want the hassle of asking for one because I know she is not in the position to make that call. Greatful we paid half price.

Hi there,

I am glad to hear that you got to enjoy the sunrise and our beautiful beach - we are truly blessed to be surrounded by such natural beauty, but I'm very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at Stevensons.

Most guests love the stones and the back-to-nature atmosphere of the bathrooms in our suites, however, I'm concerned that you were worried about sharp stones - I will be sure to inspect the state of the shower in your suite.

There is a chance there may have been an issue with lights in your bathroom at the time of your stay – for this I apologise. Due to our location we often need to source parts from Apia and even New Zealand and recently we had been waiting on some replacement lights.

As for outdoor lighting, I am currently looking into solar garden lights to have this issue addressed in the near future.

Thanks again for your feedback, I hold it in high regard as it helps us work towards improving our site and service. If you would like to discuss any of these issues further, please do not hesitate to email me directly on: stevensonsatmanase@lesamoa.net

Kind regards,

Emily

Stayed at Stevensons for three nights last week. It was great to see the staff again, and see the improvements since my last visit in Sept 2013.
The new beach bar is absolutely fantastic, right on the beach, meals can be ordered from there and you can while away the hours in sublime bliss.
As usual the rooms were spotlessly clean as was the rest of the hotel.
I just got back home this morning and am already looking at booking for Sept this year.
It was great to meet Emily the new marketing manager and I wish her well.
Thanks Megan,Tulu and all the staff for the fantastic service.

Ps, Megan, all the very best to you in the future, it was fantastic to have met you and you will be sorely missed.

Room Tip: Depends what floats your boat, but I love the Eurofales.
