“Five stars for Rex, Joyce and Tui Lodge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

A wonderful place, wonderful hosts, and fine accommodations in a place (East Cape) where they're hard to come by. Stayed recently (December 2011) with Rex and Joyce in their B and B, which features impressive gardens, clearly a labor of love. I have to make the additional comment that the hosts were generous and kind, well beyond the call of duty . . . B and B's are as much about the personality and "vibe" of the patrons as the place itself, and Rex and Joyce rate five stars.

Just off the main road, which is very much to your advantage . . . much nicer than the nearby alternatives.

Room Tip: only four rooms-- we were lucky to get one, but I'd advise reservations . . .

This is situated in a beautiful part of the country, and surrounded bt remote beaches and you can spend days exploring the area from the lodge to Gisborne. We had a very nice breakfast and a wonderful dinner well worth a vist if you like a quiet and relaxing holiday.

Wow Wow Wow you must go to Tui Lodge, Te Kaha.
We did'nt know what to expect when we set off on our driving trip around the East Cape.
We just thought we would stop off in different places and had intended to book in at the Motor Camp at Te Kaha but a couple we met in Whakatane recommended we stay at Tui Lodge and we were so pleased we did.Set up on a hill with amazing views of the sea and White Island it was just like Paradise. Beautiful tropical gardens, a lovely stream running through the property, wonderful hosts and delicious food, we did'nt want to leave and we will definitely be returning as soon as we can.

Tui Lodge is the most amazing place. From the moment we arrived we were overwhelmed by the beauty of the gardens and the warmth of the hosts. Joyce was so motherly and made me feel just like I was at home. Rex has an unbeleivable sense of humour and kept us laughing all night at the dinner table. It has a wonderful atmosphere, which was only improved by waking to the sound of the Tui's in the morning and then sitting down to a sumptuous breakfast. If you are looking for accomodation on the coast look no futher than Tui Lodge. You will not be dissapointed.

Room Tip: The Tui room was my favorite.

The key value here is "the horse´s tail" - the gentleman of the couple who are the hosts (his wife being the self-described" horse´s head")! I came with a colleague after a conference in Whakatane. He took us on a spontaneous tour and gave us insider´s perspective on life and history in this corner of "old New Zealand." The accomodations are nice and family-based. The hosts used to live in Papua New Guinea and also have links to Australia, so they share great stories at the dinner table. Food is excellent, and tea-makings are always available. Yard decorations are a hoot - amongst the remarkable variety of plants that are nurtured by the horse´s head. The visit here really gave us a better understanding of rural New Zealand, through our host´s eyes. He also helped us to organize a horseback ride with a local Maori guide that took us through incredibly beautiful "fairy forest" (a la Lord of the Rings movie). We had hoped to go on a ride advertised on web in a reserve nearby, but when we arrived, we discovered that the road there had been blocked by a local bloke and the community was going thru normal slow community processes to deal with him. The ride our host helped us organize was great, even for my colleague who had never been on a horse before. The guide had total control of the horses with his voice. Our host also took us to see what is probably one of the most photographed little churches in NZ, near Cape Runaway and gave us a quick overview of the real estate up for sale on the coast. There are also sea kayaking and ocean/riveractivities nearby. Definitely the best place in this neck of the woods!

Room Tip: All rooms are fine. One (the one I had) opened out onto a lovely little porch looking out over the s...
