My partner and I went for a meal with her parents and granddad as we were staying locally at the Portavadie Lodge over the weekend. We make a booking and it seemed busy as the only table they had available was at 8.30.
We arrived around 8.15 to have a drink before the meal and took a seat in the reception area. Around 8.45 one of the waiters come and gave us menus and told us the table wasn’t ready yet. This wasn’t an issue as we were enjoying the drink. The waiter took our food order then seated us at the table just after 9. It was fairly busy in the restaurant but by no means full.
My partner order a gnocci started and I ordered rollmops. The starters were good and arrived promptly.
We were then left sitting for 20 minutes after finishing the starters, by which time the restaurant was quiet, when the waiter came over to the table, muttered something about there being a delay and put more bread on the table. Another 20 minutes passed without the waiter clearing the starter plates and when the main dishes came out with the starter plates still on the table.
Between us we ordered 3 braised veal shins, a chicken dish and scallops. We were very hungry by this stage and looking forward to the food.
The veal was terrible. It had clearly been braised for a very short time and was tough, tasteless and served on a bed of very undercooked haricot beans. My girlfriend did not eat her veal at all and her mum and myself forced it down due to being hungry and it was late a night with no other places to eat. Without exaggeration I don’t think there are many dogs that would have ate it.
The scallops were chewy, completely overcooked and tasteless. Very, very poor for a restaurant that sells itself as having good quality meat and seafood.
We made a mild complaint to the waiter who admitted there had been a lot of complaints regarding the food as they were using a new menu. They agreed to deduct the uneaten veal dish from the bill and deduct the scallops from the bill.
The whole experience was a massive let down. The location is nice but the restaurant lacks atmosphere. The waiting staff are poorly trained, inattentive and lack basic communications skills. The food was terrible and at £15 for the veal and £17 for the scallops you expect something reasonable.
The only reason this was no a 1 star rating is the fact they deducted 2 dishes which were uneaten from the bill. This however does not take away from a rare meal with my girlfriends family being ruined by an incompetent and poorly run restaurant. Steer Clear!
The restaurant at the Portavadie Lodge on the other hand was excellent (part of the same complex and company). Friendly, attentive staff and excellent food at reasonable prices. The lodge staff should train the marina staff and especially the chef.

My sincere apologies you did not enjoy your dining experience with us at the Marina Restaurant and left less than satisfied with the experience. We do value all feedback as it helps us to develop and grow. I will be sure to pass on your comments regarding the food to our Executive Chef especially as it was the launch night of the new menu. I personally have taken on board the issues raised regarding the service which was well below the standards we always aim to achieve here at Portavadie. I can assure you I will be working with the team to make sure this does not happen again.
On a separate note I am glad you enjoyed your experience in the Lodge and have passed this on to the team.
I do hope you give us the opportunity to welcome you back to the Marina Restaurant so we can give you the dining experience that is expected at Portavadie. For any future bookings or should you wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me.
