There is very little choice when looking for somewhere to eat on Christmas island and this means everywhere is expensive so it was a pleasant surprise to read on the roundabout blackboards that it was $15 Pasta night at the Rumah Tinggi.
We didn’t have a booking but took a chance and turned up at the almost empty restaurant and asked if they could seat us. The staff member we spoke to didn’t respond at all. She simply turned around, grabbed cutlery and marched off leaving us waiting and wondering if we would be seated or not. When she eventually returned she abruptly asked what we wanted to order and said we were on table 8. No pleasantries, no explanation of where we could find table 8, no nothing. I don’t have high expectations of good service on Christmas island but this was just plain rudeness and not what I had expected from my previous visits to this venue.
The food its self was ok and the portion quite large but don’t make the mistake of enquiring if you could order bread to eat with your pasta. I was curtly told everything was on the menu and the only bread available was the bread with dips or the bruschetta. I really didn’t fancy paying $20 for an entrée sized serving of bruschetta so went without.
The new big screen TV on the wall really didn't add to the ambiance of the place at all.
