“good hotel, potential to be great!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

We stayed her for 2 nights, a very nice property and hotel with beautiful beach front access. Our basic room was clean and lovely, and the property is beautiful and exactly as pictured online. Service was good. My only complaint is the whole place was empty, I am talking only 3-4 other guests there along with us. Kind of creepy, but great if you love the privacy. The main Thai restaurant and rooftop bar were closed "for renovations" while we were there, although no visible work was being done, they were just locked up. I suspect they can't afford to keep it open with so few guests. The remote location meant we were limited to eating at the one other restaurant on property for all meals, not much variety there. We walked down the beach to the local Thai restaurant for dinner as others had recommended, and had a great meal on the beach in a very casual and clearly local spot. If the place were operating at a more normal and bustling pace, this would be a great hotel. Worth a try if you don't like crowds and prefer a smaller hotel.

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms will have a beach view, ground floor rooms won't be able to see it through the...

We had a three day break planned as part of a 3 week trip to Thailand and we were excited by the prospect of staying at the Maikhao Dream resort. But it turned out to be a big disappointment, mainly due to the shocking standard of service, which is well below our previous experiences in the Far East and a long way off what would be required at a 5 star resort.

It started well enough, an efficient transfer from the airport in a 7 series BMW and a warm welcome at reception.

Then it started to go pear shaped.

Our room was unacceptable. A strong sewerage smell from the bathroom, a faulty safe, An unstocked mini bar, no toiletries and no table and chairs on the balcony. Hardly ready for a new guest and no one has signed this room off as acceptable to allocate.

I made my way back to reception and to be fair, the front of house manageress ( who was excellent throughout our stay), came back with me, apologised and quickly arranged to move rooms to an upgraded pool villa. (I got the impression that this wasn't a one off and recent TA reviews confirm my suspicions)

But the rest of our stay was just disappointment after disappointment. As per previous recent reviewers, service at breakfast and lunch was appalling. No eye contact from staff, no awareness that we were even there. Constantly having to ask for standard things like a pot of tea, etc. No one attending the pool bar.

I have never witnessed such a set of unmotivated staff in all my travels. What is going on here?

If it wasn't for the efficient front of house manager and her team, and the beauty of the location and well kept gardens this would be a one star review.

What a sad state of affairs the Maikhao Dream is in. As others have said, you do hope they can sort it out.

Avoid until they get their act together.

We stayed here as we were attending a wedding nearby. We were collected from the airport in a very comfortable car and transported to the hotel very efficiently. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. We were shown to our room but discovered that both the safety deposit box and the fridge were not working. After several visits to reception-noone understood us on the telephone, they eventually replaced the safety deposit box. We waited 25 minutes for our luggage-not good in a resort of only 52 rooms!
The place is picturesque with a beautiful beach and gardens. Unfortunately the pool was not chilled and so was warm to get in to. We sat by the pool bar for quite a while as the service was so poor and were disgusted to find scum marks around our waists as we got out because the pool was so dirty. It was no better the next morning so we did not use the pool again at all.
The restaurants were expensive and food only average. Luckily we discovered a quaint little restaurant up the beach which served Thai food of a decent quality and decent prices.
Breakfast was a shambles. The staff were very inattentive and every morning we had to go to get tea/coffee as we were never asked if we wanted anything. The choice was poor and quality not what is expected of a 5* resort.
Our room was a garden room which was pleasant and spacious but for 3 days we had no hand towels as the maid told us they had none left. We also had to ask for our room to be made up as at 3pm, no-one had been to do it.
I went to the spa which was very expensive and only adequate although the staff were very friendly.
This resort could be sublime but it needs a shake up to put it in the category it aspires to be in. The staff were pleasant but lacking in expertise-especially the waiting staff around the pool/beach who had to be searched for in order to order food or drinks.
We had such high expectations but sadly this did not meet them. If we had not been attending a wedding, we would have checked out and moved to another hotel

Room Tip: A room away from the building site on one side of the hotel

The good bits first. The food was very good. The Thai buffet was exceptionally good. The chef, Asteray from Galicia in Northern Spain, was very helpful and cooked many dishes off menu on request. He also came out regularly to the restaurant areas and assisting in ordering food and handling requests.
The bad bits. Many of the restaurant staff had difficulty communicating in English. They also were in need of training. At breakfast (buffet style) it was necessary to call the waiter to order coffee. They should really be watching and offering service. Coffee on many occasions was cold. At lunch many orders took a long time. One dessert dish took half an hour to arrive. Seems to be a disconnect between the kirchen and the waiters. Catching waiters attention was also an issue. Noticed that they only have four baby chairs. Once a group with four baby/toddlers arrive you have no choice but to manage your toddler in a regular chair. Very challenging at times.

Pool service not very good and takes a long time. Waiter also presented two bills to be signed, one of which was someone else's. Overall it was fine but what a good place it could be if there were good restaurant staff. The GM and Head Chef certainly have their work cut out for them.

Room Tip: Try for a room on the right hand side when facing the sea.

We stayed here because we were attending a wedding nearby. The hotel is really nice and has the potential to be superb, but the service and quality and choice of food is what lets it down badly. Breakfast was appalling, one of the worst I have ever experienced at a hotel. The quality and selection of food was poor, but the service was even worse. Not once were we asked if we wanted a hor drink! The staff didn't seem to know what they were doing and didn't speak English very well. Plates and glasses were left on tables for ages after being finished with. An all round poor breakfast experience. The pool was dirty and there was no one tending to the upkeep of it.
The hotel is in the middle of nowhere so we had to eat at the hotel and we had room service twice which was average. One time we only got one set of cutlery! The reception staff could not have been more helpful. When they saw my wife was pregnant they gave us a late check-out without charge. I can't thank them enough for this. I really hope they sort out the issues facing the hotel at present and make it into the stunning resort it is. I would advise against staying at this resort for at least 12 months to give them time to improve the resort.

We stayed here because we were attending a wedding near by.

The resort itself is very nice but the standard of service, especially from the restaurant staff was very poor. Unfortunately because this resort is very far from anything else we ended up eating every meal there and we were constantly disappointed by the team.

We were also given a room next to a building site, which smelled and was a den of mosquitoes. Happily the front desk staff were helpful and eventually moved us to a room on the other side which was much better. My instinct was to leave straight away and find another hotel, but the other nearby hotels were at 100% occupancy.

On several occasions we would visit one of the restaurants or the bar and there would be no staff there. I would call reception and ask to send someone down, sometimes a person would appear, but sometimes no one would arrive. Very annoying.

The Chef was a great guy from Spain and I could tell when he started coming out and doing the waiters job (taking orders and offering menus) that he has lost patience with the staff as well.

The buffet breakfast and dinner also didn't have any labels on the food, so you really had to guess at what you were putting on your plate. First time I have seen that in a hotel this expensive.

Also the water went completely off twice during our short stay. Typically its at the time when you would like the option of a shower or using the toilet or washing sand off your feet. No apologies, not warning or notice, just grumpy staff bringing bottles of water to wash with.

When we checked out I shared my disappointment with the new German General Manager who told me he has only been there 4 weeks, has no F&B Manager and cannot recruit enough staff. He told that they have been offering a number of incentives like 5 day work week, free shuttle bus (because the resort is so far from anywhere else!) and additional pay but no one will join them. He looked ashamed and couldn't really offer a decent apology, he looks like he has given up already.

I'm not sure why he can't train the staff to bring menus, turn up and put in some effort.

From the previous positive reviews of this place it looks like the last GM had a better team around them, but with the construction next door going on until Oct 13 and a disinterested leadership I would avoid this place until these things have been completed and fired.

Room Tip: Rooms next to the construction site should be avoided.

We stayed here for 9 nights and it really was fantastic! The location is sublime, the beach is beautiful and unspoilt. We had a garden room which was very soacious, extremely clean and had a lovely terrace onto the main pool. We spent every day on the beach and went on lovely walks on Natai beach and also took a kayak along the water and over to the local fishing village which was an amazing experience. We ate between the hotel and the lovely and very inexpensive seafood restaurant down the beach. The one negative but also part of the charm was the staff speak very basic English, if your looking for 5 star service this isnt the right resort, you have to go and find staff for a drink of the beach or in the pool and you have to physically demonstrate what you are asking for, they are charming but at times it does become a little frustrating. The real highlight was meeting Master Jay, without him we wouldn't have known about the beautiful kayak safari, known about the fishing trip we could take with a local, discovered the elephants or known where to watch the spectacular ( if a little disturbing) Thai boxing. Master Jay is the hidden gem at this resort ad speaks perfect English and can facilitate and inform you about anything and turned a wonderful relaxing holiday into an adventure too and a trip we'll never forget.

Room Tip: Speak to Master Jay he's fabulous!
