“Cozy, quaint guesthouse!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

This guesthouse is one of my favorites. Not only is it charming, clean and nicely located with yummy yunnan cuisine, the staff here go above and beyond. Upon arrival they gave each of us a map and went through each point on the map...what to do...how to get there ect. At night we stayed for dinner and even though they close around 10 they let us sit and chat and play games for as long as we'd like and even brought us ice! All and all a wonderful experience!

We went without a reservation and stayed in a bungalow free for only one night.
The cute bungalow was very clean and you can sit also outside and enjoy the little garden and the view.
The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming. Explaining the surroundings with a map in good English.
We had dinner and they told us they good make every dish vegetarian. And they did! It was the most delicious food we had since a long time.
We ordered the fried mushrooms, the noodles with veggies and egg and the sweet and sour tofu.
It tasted very good together with steamed rice and was not expensive at all.
When we asked if they could make fried rice for breakfast, they also made that especially for us.
So very good service and good bungalow makes happy guests.
Pity that we had to move but we found an other one very close.

Stayed again recently with visiting friends. What follows is from my review written after our first visit in March 2011 and new comments from our 2012 stay. But there appears to be 2 areas to post for the same guesthouse; one under the old name (Mae Fa Luang) and one under the new name (Santikhiri). Most Thai still know it by the name Mae Salong.

This guesthouse reminded me of Nepal due to its perch on the mountainside. We found the proprietors to be genuinely kind, helpful and friendly. The accommodations (both the rooms in the hotel as well as the bungalows) were extremely clean and comfortable. The hot showers (shared) were to die for. We stayed in the cheap rooms for 200 baht per night but did tour the bungalows and they looked fantastic at 500 baht per night (private bathrooms, t.v. and veranda overlooking the valley). If you do stay in the main building I suggest earplugs since this location is only 1 block from the central market and the hilltribe people start arriving along the road right below your window around 5 a.m. Highly recommend this guesthouse however there is a neighboring guesthouse right next door where rooms can be had for only 50 baht per person if that is better for your budget.
On our recent stay we opted to stay in the very nice and comfortable bungalows up the hill. A bit more expensive(but much quieter!) but not as spartan as the rooms in the main house.
The entire area nearby is ideal trekking country. Head west and you will be in lovely countryside in no time. Also recommend renting an off-road motorcycle from the proprietor if you really want to cover all of the nearby hill villages in just a few days.
CAUTION: some of the tracks leading to the hill villages are rough, steep and slippery. Having said that if you take it slow you should be fine. My wife actually got off and walked on a couple of the steepest descents that were hard to ride down due to loose scree on the road. Better that she did; our companions dumped their bike when they went into an uncontrolled skid. Luckily no harm to bike or riders (could have been much worse!) but a bit shook up nonetheless.

My boyfriend and I stopped over for one night in the Little Home Guesthouse whilst checking out Mae Salong's tea plantations. The owner was lovely - really welcoming. He gave us some tea on our arrival and a detailed map of the area. We booked a small bungalow for the night. It was basic but clean and had lovely hot running water, WiFi and a flatscreen TV. We didn't eat at the Little Home Guesthouse, opting to have dinner at a local place down the road, but the traditional breakfast of mushroom and rice broth was delicious and a great way to start our day. This isn't the place to stay if you're looking for 5-star accommodation, but for a great value, friendly stopover it ticks all the boxes. PS the children who sell their wares at the local market will no doubt hassle you but they're really friendly, cute and I just couldn't stop myself from buying from them!

I decided to make my first Trip narby Chiang Rai - to the hidden Village Mae Salong and stayed at
Mae Salong Little Home Guesthouse. Very friendly Stuff, the Owner was very nice and had a chat with all Guests and has a warm Welcome - stunning at my Bike and wanted to make a Testdrive.
Th Rooms are very nice and clean, not luxury - but has everything, a Guest needs in such a remote Area in the Mountains. A perfect start for my Tour through Thailand

We moved from a fancy (at least price wise) resort in Chiang Rai to this very simple place in a very remote village. But funnily enough we felt much more at home here. Mostly, thanks to the extremely friendly and welcoming hosts (father and son), but also to the location in the middle of everything without being overly noisy. The two adjoining bungalows were perfect for a family, even so that we did not move to ones with a better view the next morning. Beds and everything were good, certainly given the price. We spent a lot of time in the small restaurant, treated to free local tea, playing cards, reading or using the surprisingly good and free WIFI (also in room). The food was simple yet tasty and the bent over backwards to adjust the menu to our picky children. From the guesthouse you can do beautiful unguided treks through the plantations and hill tribe villages and there is a great coffeeshp (great capucino) close by. When we left after three nights we had difficulty to say goodbye to the family. We will miss this special place !!!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2012

I've previously written an extensive review on Little Home (published February 11, 2012 and based on my October 2011 stay) but have recently stayed again in late June.

Our stay was just as pleasant as last time and this place remains one of my favorite guesthouse/hotels in northern Thailand. We again stayed in bungalow #B-11, but this time it did not have a refrigerator. The only room with a refrigerator was B-8, which is a new bungalow. Our friends stayed in B-8, which has a nicer bathroom, as the bungalow itself is recently built, but the view is not as good as the view form B-11, as B-8 is closer to the road.

We had "happy hour" out on the lovely balcony with the beautiful and comfortable wooden lounge chairs (we brought our own wine, as it is very hard to find wine in Mae Salong) and ate lunch at the hotel. The menu is primarily Chinese and the food was excellent, at a cost of about $4 USD per person. Our bungalow was 500 baht as we were staying in low season. In high season a bungalow is 800 baht. It is a good bargain for the level of comfort.

This is not a 4 or 5 star hotel so it is not the place to go if you are looking for luxury, but if you are looking for a lovely 2+ star place to enjoy the tranquil and peaceful environment of Mae Salong, this is the perfect spot. I've not stayed in the actual guesthouse, but instead have always booked the bungalows, which offer privacy and are surrounded by beautiful flowers. The beds are a bit hard but the atmosphere and a clean room makes up for it.

The bungalows are a short but steep climb up a hill from the guesthouse so they are not well suited for someone with mobility issues. Our room was clean, the sheets and towels were clean and the staff was extremely pleasant and gracious. The owner and his son both speak English.

The location is nice as it is right in the center of town and close to the morning market and close to the King's Mother's shrine, yet we were never woken by noise at night, primarily because the town shuts down pretty early in the evenings.
