This is one of the best finds I have ever made, and certainly the best B&B I have ever stayed in. My husband and I, in much need of some relaxation, comfort and a break from the hamster wheel of life, booked a 3 night break at Linacre Lodge fairly last minute on the recommendation of Alastair Sawday’s dog-friendly places. We stayed in the Moore suite which is really like a luxury mini flat! There is so much attention to detail it is amazing. Laura and Chris have thought through everything! The rooms are beautifully but simply decorated, the bed extremely comfortable, fluffy white towels, lovely luxury toiletries, a selection of options for hot drinks, luxury chocolates, magazines and books in abundance and a jar, labelled in a unique “Laura” style, full of a wide selection of things you might have forgotten – moisturizer, hair putty, shaving items etc.
Every day an exciting and delicious result of the day’s baking appears in the room (chocolate brownies and muffins while we were there, complete with Laura labels) when you get back home after the day’s exploits. The breakfast choices are wide-ranging and gorgeous, cooked by Laura on her Aga while you sit in her lovely warm comfortable kitchen at a family table shared with the other guests. There is a feeling that you are spending the weekend with friends rather than people you have never met before!
We also have a dog, and she too couldn’t have felt more welcomed! There was a ‘doggy welcome pack’ to greet her, as well as a fenced garden to play in, accompanied by Norman and Gus who she loved! We did two wonderful walks (including excellent pub lunches) while we were there, both of them recommended by Laura, who provided walk descriptions, maps and torches in case we got home in the dark. There was no fuss about muddy clothes and dogs, just practical help with sorting it all out, which was just what we required.
The first evening we walked across the fields by starlight to the friendly local pub, and then opted for the comfort of Linacre Lodge the following 2 nights. On one of these Laura happily provided plates and cutlery so we could eat the food we had bought in a local town, and on the other we enjoyed wonderful Laura-made pizzas, salad and popcorn. They do not have an alcohol licence but there is no problem with bringing wine and we shared a lovely meal with Laura, Chris and the other guests, though if we had preferred privacy we would have been just as welcome to retreat to our room with our feast. There are only 2 rooms available (though there are plans to add another at some stage), which adds to the feeling of being with friends. However, though I have some lovely friends, I cannot imagine them providing the luxury, attention to every detail of need and want that Laura and Chris at Linacre do. This place and its wonderful hosts is a gem not to be missed!
