“Ancient Runic Cross”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

This is an ancient 17 foot high Runic Cross which stands in the Ruthwell Parish Church. Dating back 12 Centuries, it is designed to tell the Life and Passion of Jesus Christ. It was broken apart and hidden in the church floor in 1640 when the General Assembly of Kirk demanded that all idolatrous monuments be destroyed. In 1801, the pieces of the cross were recovered and placed in the churchyard. By 1887, it was obvious that the cross needed to be placed in an indoor location and a new north apse was added to the church and this is where the ancient cross can now be seen. Fascinating carvings!
