“Great staff and amazing views.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

This is a great hostel with a wonderful staff and great views of the surrounding hills and the city of Santa Marta. The somewhat steep uphill climb to the hostel is worth the excellent setting above the small village of Minca. Peaceful and relaxing.

Easily one of the most special spots I've visited in my travels to South America. Part of me doesn't want to recommend it, as it's the kind of place you wouldn't want to see spoiled.

Minca is accessible by collectivo from Santa Marta, after which you need to hike up the steep hill to the hostel. Don't let this discourage you - once you see the view, you'll know it was worth it. The place itself feels like a treehouse hidden in the dense jungle on the hillside. Meals are provided, for a price, as is locally grown coffee. Both are highly recommended. All the activities available in the area are listed in a book in the hostel, and the staff can help you plan your day. The water comes from a natural source high up on the hill, so showers are quite cold, but I found if I showered just as I came back to hostel after a hike it was actually quite nice. The place is great in the evenings, with amazing sunsets and a really chill vibe. You can hang out and have a beer (or several beers) while playing cards or board games, or just chill out and read a book. It definitely isn't a party place, but after Santa Marta/Taganga that was a welcome change.

Truly a hidden gem. Highly recommended and worth the effort.

Room Tip: Bring bug spray.

My husband and I came the day before, without our pack to check it out and fell in love with this hostel. The next day, we called the hostel and someone came down to help us bring our pack up. We stayed three nights and loved the view, people we met and the yummy food they serve. Jay, one of the owners had just had his parents there. He helped us with the next hostel and even booked us the room , his parents stayed in. This our favorite hostel in Colombia. Jan and Dave

Room Tip: we loved the honeymoon suite, that is the view from our room

Casa loma is tucked away in the hills and if you are up for a bit of a hike to get there it's worth it!

Sunrise and sunset each morning, friendly relaxed hosts and simple but comfortable rooms.

Great local home cooked food each day for a decent rate- Bring snacks and anything you need from the city as its quite remote.

This is the type of place you want to find while traveling and I almost hope ppl don't in some ways as I'd hate to see it get spoiled. An unreal view, fantastic common space, and really great chill ppl that are supposed to be what hostels are all abt. If they had some wifi (it's a long walk up and down the hill) they would be perfect. Truly unique and magical place.

It's a hell of a hike to the top so make reservations before hiking to the top! We saw many people get turned away because they were full. They are a true rural hostel, but with a few conveniences. You can rent a hammock, a basic cabin, or bring a tent. They are currently in the process of adding a few more bathrooms / showers because they are becoming more popular. It's a bit rustic and basic, which isn't bad, just a warning. Ants may crawl on you while on the toilet. When they're full it's a bit crowded since they only have one small main area and 3 showers / toilets. The owner is quite friendly and they employ transient backpackers as cooks and general help. They offer breakfast, dinner, fresh juice and snacks at a reasonable price. The view is as good as everyone says it is, and the local area is full of great hikes. Definitely check out the food, view, and humming birds at Hotel Minca, as well as the coffee shop just before the Hotel entrance for a great brownie (for South America :-) ). BRING BUG SPRAY!!!

Room Tip: Make reservations if you can.

Do not listen to Mr. Lonely Planet Guide guy when he writes "not much to do in Minca". I know he didn't do the nocturnal "eagle-bat" cave indiana jones experience in Rio Claro, and I know he didn't spend ten minutes in Minca, a beautiful place with lots to do and lots to love! Um, to start...the view???? Amazing! Whatever, so there's no address and you have to take some stairs by a church up a steep but not unreasonable climb to reach it. This fact only makes it that much cooler! You feel as if you've reached some sort of treehouse paradise when you get up there. The lovely British owners are charming and hospitable, and are in love with their adopted home. Ask about coffee plantation tours, waterfall walks, tubing...and if you're lucky, maybe you'll learn the secret of the magic mud. Oh...and they grow the coffee they serve you in the morning??? Some local guy cultivates the honey on your granola...which he also made??? Casa Loma has a chill, fun atmosphere, backpacker style but not a stupid party vibe...just a great place for cool, adventurous travelers. Do it!

Room Tip: The "treehouse" is supposed to be stunning.
