“Nice but not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Stayed here one night. It has shared bathrooms and many Mosquitos .
The rooms are quite expensive for what you get. The view is beautiful. The people who work there are very friendly.
The ambience was great. Me myself would not go back there..it's very backpack style.
Not my type of thing. Good enough for one night.
We moved to another place

Be aware that its a very steep hike to get there!! Very steep! Nice and do able but not for everybody.

Depending on what you are looking for I think it's good enough for youngsters
You can rent a hammock for $12 per night ... good when traveling on a tight budget

My friend and I had been traveling around Colombia all summer and decided to spend a night at Casa Loma to escape the Santa Marta heat. After one night we fell in love and ended up staying a month to volunteer. The first thing you will notice at Casa Loma is the amazing view of Santa Marta and the ocean--every night you get a different beautiful sunset over the water. The vibe is relaxed and fun and there's something for everyone: reading in the hammocks, hikes to nearby waterfalls, coffee tours, etc. The best part about Casa Loma is the people though. It attracts friendly people from all around the world and Jay, the owner, is a ton of fun and extremely knowledgable about the region. If you're going to Minca, this is the place to stay!

Room Tip: The hammocks and dorms are a great value, but the Treehouse is best for privacy and the Mirador has...

Great place. We stayed one night, met some really nice people and had some good conversation while we took-in the awesome view of the lights of Santa Marta.

It’s a bit of a hike up a winding path, and better journeyed in the day. But once you reach the rustic destination I don’t know how you can argue with the walk.

Bathrooms could have been cleaner, but the beds were clean and comfortable.

We arrived late, but the managers were friendly and welcoming. They even made us some food.

By far the most enjoyable hostel we stayed in, in Colombia. I would recommend it!

Room Tip: if the top bungalow is open grab it.

You are rewarded with a spectacular view of Minca and Santa Marta after you hike up the epic stairs to Casa Loma. You are greeted by friendly staff who also cook good food and make you feel welcome. The place itself is pretty basic and kept moderately clean / tidy. Well worth a couple of days chill time, read a book etc...

I'm guessing that most people go to Minca to get a bit of peace and solitude which is difficult to find at Casa Loma. The hostel itself is kinda cute looking and rustic with a nice view looking over the forest and toward Santa Marta. It is however, kinda small and therefore quite intimate which is kinda weird considering that you're surrounded by miles and miles of gorgeous forest.
The hostel seems to attract a youngish backpacker crowd and serves up breakfast, dinner, slightly over priced beers, hammocks, chairs, there are a few board games and music is played all day which makes it feel like you're in a rustic version of YHA or HI.
I stayed in the dorm which is small and basic and costs 20,000 pesos which is about 11 dollars per person. From what I can remember the one bathroom was functioning but could've done with a clean up.
The owner, Jay, was very helpful and knowledgeable about Minca and Colombia and in general the hostel was run reasonably well. However, overall it didn't appeal to me because it just felt a bit too intimate for my liking and I wasn't able to find any peace or solitude here. I also think it's slightly overpriced considering how simple and basic the place is.

We stayed 2 nights after reading the very positive reviews below.

The staff was very friendly and helpful with providing information.

The views are pretty nice from the hostel but thats it...

In general the whole place is overpriced.

The 'el mirador', 'el centro', 'castillo' and 'the den' are connected to the main building which means you hear everything. From kitchen sounds, chatting people and the playing music from the staff.

We stayed in 'the den' which is next to the kitchen (10 centimer from our bed) and close to the common area and speakers. The first night, the music was playing till 23.00 and people stayed up till 24.00 talking. In the morning the staff started preparing breakfast at 6.30, which wakes you up inmediately.

The second night there was luckely no music and the people chatting were sitting a bit further away. Unfortenately, one of the staff members put the laundry machine on at 7.30 next to our room in the morning.

So if you like a quiet peaceful stay DO NOT go here. Furthermore, our bed sheets had blood stains including the musquito net. Why not wash them or throw them away? The bathroom is shared with 20 people and should be cleaned more often. Instead, the staff is drinking rum every night, and cleaning the bottles in the morning in order to wake up the guests.

Advice; act more western and remember that you have guest which are paying (a lot of) money to stay in your basic accomodation.

In the end the stay was ok, but 1 night is more than enough. The best option is the tree house in my opinion, since it is the furthest away from the main building.

Room Tip: Take the tree house, its the most quiet room
