“Very unique and memorable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

My husband and I booked the Twilight Encounter tour after reading all the great reviews and we are very glad we did. Our guide was amazing and really treated us like family. He was very funny but when he spoke about the Maori culture and the forest was very serious which made you understand the true importance of everything. Yes, it did rain while we were there but I was prepared with a rain jacket and hood. Don’t wear good shoes if it is raining because although most of the tour is on a boardwalk, some areas are not and will get muddy and dress warm!! In the forest you won’t get soaked because of all the trees. Our guide taught us how to identify a male and female kiwi, facts about the plants, and Maori culture. The whole tour is very powerful. Our guide dropped us back off at our hotel (McKenzie B&B) afterwards because he said it was too dark for us to walk home. I can’t say enough good things!! I would recommend this tour to anyone.

“Maori Engagment”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

This experience was an absolute highlight. Walking through the forest at night with great Maori guides telling real and interesting lore of the forest was wonderful. The way they had our group talking about and engaging with their culture and with each other was a testament to their genuine and honest leadership and relaxed way of interacting. The experience of seeing the really, really ancient trees this way was moving and inspiring. My wife and I went back to the forest the next day and whilst that was beautiful in the daylight, it was crowded and did not compare with the mood, the intensity and the knowledge of culture shared on the night tour. I'd love to do this walk when moon is full.

Amazing tour of Waipoua Forest. Stories, songs, history, legends, passion all come to life during this walking tour. Kiwis calling out at night, spiders, rain... it's all included. The experience is daunting, intimidating (to see how insignificant we really are), moving and almost spiritual.

I understand why this is a #1 rated attraction.

Note - If offered an umbrella, take it. There is a reason this is called a "Rain" Forest.

“Cool cultural experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

While on a Northland road trip with our teenage children earlier this week, we made the decision to stay over in Omapere (near Opononi) so we could do the Footprints guided walk at night in the Waipoua Forest. What a great decision. We loved every moment.... we had a perfect evening with a clear sky and lots of stars to admire these stunning, ancient kauri trees. It really is an amazing, spiritual experience being in the forest at night, hearing the birds (mostly Moreporks - no kiwi this night) and learning about the forest. Our guides (Matiu and Bill) were great value - they knew what they were taking about and made it fun while also adding a personal element. A "must do' for all kiwi families as well as a great experience for our overseas visitors. Thank you!! Highly recommended.... :) Had a nice meal afterwards too at the Copthorne hotel in Omapere.

“Simply amazing.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2012

If you are in the North Island this in an absolute must! Nothing I can say on here will compare to the experience that you get with Footprints. It's amazing to be in the forest with guides who are so passionate about the forest, the experience is almost spiritual, like nothing I have experienced before. I wouldn't want to give too much away, but highly recommend this once in a lifetime journey. Thanks to Bill and Mathu for an unforgettable time.
