Our family spent 5 days at the Mauna Kea. Like other reviewers, our intention was to stay at the Four Seasons (our chain of choice), but the price was beyond even Four Seasons norm. The location of the Mauna Kea, a former Rock Resort, was unbeatable. The beach was inviting. The snorkeling family friendly. And the access to prime cycling routes a highlight for one of our travelers. Dinner at Manta was delicious. Our expectations for service, friendly staff, and meeting our needs before we even know what they are, however, were not met. After visits to Four Seasons, Fairmont, and boutique hotel locations around the world, we are spoiled. The Mauna Kea team (restaurant, pool, snorkel shack, housekeeping) just didn't make the grade. If you seek location, location, location and can overlook the service gaps, then this is truly a special destination with a comfortable resort facility to enjoy. But if you expect high quality everything, especially when paying top dollar for it, then you may be a little disappointed.
