“White sand and (sometimes) big waves”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

As an avid surfer back in Nor Cal, I was hoping for some a decent swell at Hapuna Beach for some bodyboarding during my visit and I was not disappointed. In fact during one particularly big day at low tide, at least 5 visitors were taken by ambulance due to spinal injuries suffered while body surfing...so if you come for a visit definitely exercise caution and make note of current swell / tide conditions before jumping in. Heck if its too big out, better safe than sorry and in case there are worse things one could be doing then relaxing the endless white sand of Hapuna.

“Great Family Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

What a great beach!

We got to Hapuna Beach at around 10 a.m. and settled in for the day. We were early enough to get a great parking spot (big lot with free parking :-). The on-site board shop opened at 11 a.m., and my husband was first in line to rent a boogie board for $10 for the day.

On-site restaurant provided a great lunch. Fresh fish and chicken and burgers . . . great flavors and pleasantly surprised to find such great food at a public beach. (Kids also loved the shave ice!)

I know that weather plays a part in the height of the waves, but the day we were there, the kids were able to go out quite far and not worry about being slammed by waves. Just enough waves for some great rides on the boogie boards, and shallow enough to not have to worry about kids getting in too deep.

We bought some blow-up rafts at the ABC store for $3 a piece, and the kids had a blast with those floating and dodging waves with them.

If we come back to the Big Island again, this beach will definitely be on our list of things to do.

I will say, if we could do things differently, we would have reapplied sunscreen more often this day. We did every three hours . . . and we did end up getting a bit red.

“Picture Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Nicest beach on the island. White sand and clear water with lots of fish and turtles. Snorkelling on the north end was a great experience. Sunsets were perfect.

“Our Favorite Beach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

We spent three of our 8 days in Hawaii on this beach. It has great parking, the shore isn't rocky like other beaches and the waves were perfect for our kids to boogie board on. We enjoyed smoothies and fish tacos at the Three Frogs take-out up the hill, and watched the whales off shore while we ate. It was busy, but not too crowded. There isn't much shade, so bring an umbrella. Our favorite beach on the Kohala Coast!
