“Well worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013 via mobile

This is very friendly pub . Great atmosphere , excellent food, very helpful staff. They have live bands on at the weekends . The beers are very well kept. If you have never visited this pub I highly recommend at visit.

This was where we stayed after 5 days of walking Hadrian's wall. The initial impression (rooms above the pub) was not great - a little dingy, more of a boozer than a hotel. But Lauren behind the bar really looked after us. She booked us in and showed us to our rooms and was really friendly and chatty the whole time, a really nice girl. There had been a mix-up though and we were in a twin rather than double room (Lauren was really apologetic about this and she gave us the first drink free). She warned us that there was a band playing that Saturday night so it would be quite loud until around 11pm - so we spent the evening in the pub - not that we were really complaining, beer is super cheap in Wallsend! Lauren was the only one working that night, and cooked us dinner, gave us beer, and looked after everyone else in the pub - all with a smile on her face and a good sense of humour. Dinner was really basic - soup, burger, curry & chips - but after 5 days walking we would have eaten anything!
The beds were comfy, and the bathroom fine - although the shower-door didn't close properly/work on the hinge right (room 7?) but hopefully that can be easily fixed.
The next day we slept in and then still had a continental breakfast, and the chef knocked us up a bacon sandwich despite the official breakfast hours being over. There was also absolutely no hurry for us to be out of the room - we didn't leave until 1pm and were never hassled to vacate so they could start cleaning it - allowing us a refreshingly lazy and relaxing Sunday sleep in.
This is a very basic place to stay, but the hospitality was great on the night. We wouldn't recommend this if you're looking to treat someone to a meal out or romantic night away, but is totally sufficient after 5 days of walking (and there weren't too many options in Wallsend anyway). As long as expectations aren't too high, and you're happy to meet the locals and have a good time, this is a totally acceptable place to stay.

Easy check in. Parrot called billy in bar was barking and doing a dance. Rooms I was not expecting such luxury. When I booked at that price I stayed longer as it was cheap and I wanted to take the bed home room 3 was lovely. Would recommend to everyone

We stayed at this hotel for our daughters 5th birthday. We booked a function room and the buffet, which the food was excellent The hotel overall is in a quiet location, the staff were very friendly and welcoming, we had a family room which was very spacious, the decor in the room was very modern, tea and coffee in the room. Breakfast was lovely, variety of cereals and full English breakfasts. Overall stay, FANTASTIC, would recommend.

Well, when looking for places to stay in Northumberland we had a quick look on Hotel.com, for B&B accommodation and Stumbled upon the Dorset Arms Hotel. From the Photographs we saw we thought that it looked inviting and quaint with the hanging baskets that were on show and the front of the hotel which looked nice. We booked the hotel online and thought no more of it.
We arrived at the Dorset Arms car park and would have loved to have parked right away, but as there were cars for sale in the spaces, we found it quite difficult!! Never the less, we eventually found a space, round the back with the lovely sight of bin bags full of dirty linen, just left there presumably for collection? and dirty bins! Now this is only the beginning......
We walked into the hotel, into the bar area, which was used as reception to collect the keys, we were told our room number and walked to our room, on a carpet that can only be described as tired and dirty. We opened our room door and the carpet was the same inside, dirty with big stains and sticky. We tuned the bedcovers over too find that the bed sheets had already been slept in, crumpled and made up poorly, which as a paying guest the one thing you hope to find is a clean bed space and room to sleep in. My husband walked into the bathroom and couldn't believe his eyes, there was excrement what can only be described as 'smeared' around the toilet bowl and all around the toilet!!! we were lost for by words by then and needless to say we both agreed that we were not staying here a minute longer!
We went downstairs to talk to the manager about a refund, as we had paid online, and were greeted by a very apologetic man. His excuses were that firstly he had given us the wrong room (well whomever was going to get that room was going to be in for a shock is all I can say) and he offered us an alternate room, which we were definitely NOT going to take. The manager then agreed that he would refund us the money for the rooms. We agreed and the manager went off to refund us our money. As we stood in the reception/bar area we glanced into the breakfast room, another shock horror scene. It was 3.00 in the afternoon and there were breakfast dishes still stacked up and out on view. Cereal packets, spoons, bowls etc. all set up, on a stainless steel table, that looked like it had been wiped down with a dirty, greasy cloth and left streaky, by this time we all thinking we had had a lucky escape and were itching to leave!
We left the Dorset Arms with no intention to return. What a waste of a journey is all I can say, when you book and pay for a hotel, the minimum you expect is for it the be clean and anything else is a bonus, but this Hotel left us lost for words. My only advise for the manager is to shut the hotel down for two weeks to re-staff, re-train and re- decorate as if done up has the possibility to be a really nice Hotel.

Yes we're back again at our favourite refuelling stopover. No not Jimmy Oliver's or Egg on Ronny's..but the Dorset Arms Hotel,Wallsend.

Most women detest cooking xmas lunch...my partner is no exception. So I rang and booked a table for Wednesday 19 December. A very pleasant young lady took my order from the Christmas Menu priced at £9.95. We do not usually order starter or dessert as the main course is sufficient. However, when a starter and dessert is included in the £9.95...I could not refuse.I ordered the homemade soup which was thick and tasty with a warmed roll followed by roast turkey. Florence ordered fresh prawns and roast turkey (The vegetables were a meal in themselves).
We stayed an hour and half savouring our xmas treat. Service was excellent and the conversation with Stan the owner, stimulating. The good news is that because of the demand...you can still enjoy the Dorset Arms Christmas Menu right till the end of January 2013.
So if you're still searching for a roasting tin to put your big bird in...DON'T. Pick up the phone and take her for an unforgettable Xmas lunch. At £ 9.95 you should still have enough for a few wobbly waters.

Yuletide Felicitations,

Brian and Florence.
