“Ski trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2012

Third floor front rooms have balconies, bath tubs and electric roll down shutters. Convenient to tram, bus, grocery, banks, and short but steep walk to old town. Very nice helpful management and friendly dog!

This hotel has had better times but is not degenerated. The rooms are clean and large, the sanitary is sufficient. The restaurant is quite good.

We just got back from a weeks skiing in the Serre Chevalier valley. We stayed at the Hotel Vauban which I can highly recommend as a base. It does have a little of a 1970s feel to it, but you have to remember this IS France!

It is located in Briancon which is right at the very end of the valley for skiing. The hotel is located just a 2-5 minute walk from the ski hire shops and gondola. The staff were ALWAYS very helpful, we were later getting there than planned, around 11:30pm so we rung ahead and they gave us full instructions on how to get into the car park etc etc.

The hotel was ALWAYS kept immaculately clean, with all our towels etc being changed daily. We had a double and a twin room, both were spacious and well appointe and both had their own En Suite.

There are electric shutters on the outside of the windows so you are able to get a good nights sleep after a hard days activity.

It has free WiFi as well which kept the teenagers happy in a evening, there is also a TV in the room , and you can get BBC World Service on it if you really need a fix of British TV.
The breakfast at €9.00 per person per day might sound expensive but is the best value in the town.

There are enough good restaurants in the NEW town to keep you going provided you are not a "PICKY" eater. The "OLD" town which is a 20 minute walk UP the hill has many more.

Be warned though, eating out in Briancon is not cheap as there are no "Bar Meals" available really, you are paying restaurant prices every night, so if you are on a budget you have been warned. It cost us between €70 and €90 per night plus tips for 4 of us.

Briancon, both old and new is a lovely town, in my opinion, far and away the nicest town in the Serre Chevalier Valley.
Will we go back?
Definately!!

On the plus side, the hotel is excellently located. The ski lift is just a few minutes away on foot.

There are automated blinds for the window, so you can sleep in complete darkness.

Showering is possible in the room and in a shared shower is available in the hall, so you don't need to queue!

Parking is available for hotel guests. You'll need to take a turn on the roundabout to get in though, as you'll need to get out of your car to open the gate - something you don't want to do while traversing the road.

In terms of food, the hotel's breakfast is decent. For dinner, there's a very good Chinese restaurant in a radius of 500m around the hotel, as well as several Italian / French restaurants.

On the negative side: during our 4 day stay, the hotel lobby & restaurant suffered from a strong smell. The rooms were not affected though, but it certainly didn't invite to stay during the day or consider having dinner in the hotel restaurant.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2008

I stayed at the Vauban in May 2007, as Briancon was the setting for one of the stages of the Giro d'Italia (Italy's version of the Tour de France). Briancon is a really wonderful little town and the Alps are beautiful but let me stick to reviewing the hotel.

I booked the hotel through venere.com. We arrived very late at night, I think around 10:30 pm, because that is when our train (from Barcelona, it took forever, multiple trains) arrived. The staff were waiting for us as I emailed ahead. They checked us in and were very welcoming. We had a room with two twin beds as you can see in the photo. Unfortunately I took the picture while our room was a total mess and it doesn't show the whole room. But it was quite spacious, as was the bathroom. The bathroom was very clean as well and had a bidet (I never tried it though). It also had a balcony overlooking the street below. In the photo, the hustle and bustle is mostly due to the preparation for the race. The balcony window ledge often served as our refrigerator overnight! The hotel was very centrally located, and a supermarket was very close by, so we always bought fruit, yogurt, etc for breakfast. As a vegan, I had somewhat of a difficult time eating in town, but I got by, and there were two really good restaurants, one a creperie and other that was a couscous restaurant.

My friend and I planned to rent bikes (already prearranged) from a particular store, and were going to ride up the Col d'Izoard, one of the mountains they climb in the Tour de France. The store turned out to totally flake out on us and never answered the phone. So the hotel staff, seeing how crestfallen we were, called all around town until they found someone who would rent to us. They really went out of their way and we appreciated it immensely.

Overall, the Vauban will definitely be my hotel of choice if I ever make it back to lovely Briancon.
