“Excellent weeks skiing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012 via mobile

We have just got back from a fab weeks skiing with club med in Serre Chevalier. This was our 2nd trip to this hotel. The last time being 2 years ago. What a difference the new staff make. This time round we found the GO reps exceptional & really friendly. Plus lots of English speaking reps. (Which definitely helps) The new manager Abdel Osmani went out of his way to make everyone feel welcome. He was up at the crack of dawn & was normally the last one to go to bed. Joining in with the party atmosphere & making sure we all had a good time, and trust me we didn't didn't have that many early nights. Nothing was to much trouble for the team. The new entertainment team including Julien & the English dancer Jeni were fantastic. Patrice the (champagne guy) & his wife Marion were also very helpful. The bar staff & Gina (the kiwi) were also really friendly, helpful & smiley. This was the first week that club med was open & to be fair the shows they put on in the first week were 10 times better than 2 years ago. The last night was dedicated to a kids show. Thumbs up to the GO team they made all the kids feel special & they put on a really good show for the adults.

I have only 2 complaints 1) the ski instructors were basically hopeless 2) the Nero virus's which was ripe 2 years ago may happen again if they're not too careful. This is because when going upstairs to the restaurant although a member of staff was always waiting at the top of the stairs to welcome you in. The problem was they would stand right in front of the hygiene sanitisers. So no one could see the gel. It would be better if they actually squirted the gel on your hands & said bonjour/bonsoir at same time. This would at least stop some of the germs from getting into the hotel. You can't guarantee this but it would certainly help matters & make sure more people are more hygienic when entering the restaurant.

Anyway, we're back to serre chevalier in 5 weeks time but this time a very large group of 20 people will be coming with us. I only hope that that week will be as good as last week.

Well done Club Med you've finally got it right this time with the staff. Don't let these guys get away. So much better than 2 years ago!

We have just returned from a week at Serre Chevalier. The week started off badly when we couldn't get into our rooms until after 6pm, having arrived just before 3pm after a long journey. Reception is like a badly run airport terminal. You queue for 20 mins to be told your room will be ready in 20 mins. More queuing to be told the same thing! This happened for two hours until we finally got the keys. Trekked down to the room with bags etc to find that the room wasn't ready. Full bins, used towels etc. Back to reception to queue again. Same thing. Told it would be 20 minutes. Went to the room again..still not ready. Queue again... the explanation was that the contract with the hotels says the rooms will be ready "a partir de " 3pm which means anytime after 3pm apparently!

Generally the service was pretty poor. If you don't speak French you are very likely to miss out on any activities you would like to try as there is limited English spoken. We were invited for a glass of champagne to welcome us as international guests but we couldn't find the the rep who had invited us. We did find him later but we certainly did not feel that international non French speaking guests were well catered for at all. It makes you appreciate the UK service culture and how it has improved in the last 20 years.

Food is ok but totally self service. This not only means queuing and getting your own food but also clearing up the table before you, so that you can sit down to eat when it is busy! There are very few tables of four, most are table of 8 which you have to share. Horrible food poisoning on the last night which appears from the reviews to be a regular occurrence. I wish we had read the other reviews before booking.

The hotel is huge. Over 1,500 guests we were told and it felt more like 2,000. Very busy and sometimes noisy at night.

However, our kids loved the hotel, particularly the unlimited free coke....enough said.

This was our first club med experience. We came off season so did not have to pay the full whack. We had six adults and two under 5s. Had a great time skiing and could not blame club med for the heat wave that meant ice in the mornings and slush after lunch and no snow on the bunny slope!

For the money we felt we could not have done better and are looking again for 2013, but at a bigger, higher resort.

Food is a buffet so don't expect excellence but this is the best catering of this type I have so far experienced. The wine was flowing and there was no difficulty getting drinks.

The resort is not that big so experienced skiers may get bored and you will struggle to get a good lunch.

Our two year old turned three whilst we were away and he fell into the baby room and not the petit club skiing. I am yet to find any operator that does well with the 2 year olds. so he was not that happy by the end of the week but our four year old loved it!

Expect fun raucous evenings in the bar led by the staff (a bit hi de hi for us) and if you prefer a quiet drink stay in the restaurant or get a seat by the reception. We felt the "night club" should be used more and leave a better atmosphere in the bar for the less club 30-50 singles crowd!

We had agreat time!

Room Tip: The family room is good with small children but you have to walk through the kids bit to get to the...

Club Med is a bit particular way of spending holiday. I don't particularly enjoy during summer but during winter, for skiing I think it is perfect. We went their feb 2012 with our 3 years old child and we had a great time. The child was handle in the petit club and therefore my husband and I could ski. Also i like the group for skiing with teachers, this is very good for beginners or medium level, but also for the one who ski very well as the guide bring them to the best suitable place for them to ski without beginners around.
The food was good and in big quantity, the animation was great, cocktails at the bar was good as well. Nothing went wrong, everything was fine. Nobody was sick, so we enjoyed and will probably spend our next skiing holiday in Club Med.
However, I believe during school holiday the place must be crowd with people and young children and this could be heavy to support.

This hotel is a rip off. When you ask why you have to pay 20 euros for wifi, the answer of the chef de village is: i will give you oysters... This hotel is passe. Food is never warm and staff is doing its best. I am paying more than 6000 euros for my family and i expect wifi and sauna to be included for this amount

Room Tip: Pick at least a 4 'trident'. Wifi and sauna is included...

This is our second Club Med experience, the first was at Cervinia. Serre Chavalier is one of the biggest hotels in the ski selection, it's a little too big especially at meal times it can seem a bit like a busy high street. The food was amazing, no complaints, lots of choice all tasty and no gastro bug for any of our party of 6. The kids ate well every day. One grudge is that the cutlery and crockery often wasn't clean - but i'm sure when you're washing so many dishes it's to be expected. We came at the end of the season and got 30cm of snow during the week 18 - 25 March, but i do feel sorry for the people coming in after us as the lower pistes are all slushy and by Saturday they really weren't a great idea to come down on. Preferred the ski instructor at our Cervinia resort last year (Fulvio), our guy this time didn't really seem to keen on correcting and teaching us new stuff, he just wanted to go off piste and do things things that were a little above our level 2+ ability. We eventually went off on our own as we weren't having much fun with the group - we were the only 2 out of 12 that were english so got briefed quickly in english while the rest got a much better explanation in French. I found that a lot of people don't speak much English at this hotel compared to Cervinia. The petite club was especially bad with this and my 3 year old didn't like it very much. On the flip side, my 6 year old had a total blast and had 4 other english friends in his group. He loved his lessons every day and Snooky was really entertaining. The rooms are basic, nothing fancy at all but they were comfortable, dressing in the morning was a bit squashy with 4 of us, but i knew we were booking a 3 star vs Cervinia which was a 4 star so couldn't really complain. My parents were not too happy to have been put right on the opposite site of the hotel to us, they had to take 2 separate lifts down to get to their room and a long walk each day / evening. Monarch Airlines neglected to bring our snowboard bag with from Gatwick but we did receive it on Wednesday afternoon, they have agreed to pay for our snowboard hire and purchase of globes and socks, so not too much of an inconvinience caused.
We had a lovely week, great weather with the sun shinning all day, the slopes were ok for the time of year we went. All in all i definitely preferred Cervinia and will go back there one day - I do like the all inclusive deal that you get with Club Med and will try another hotel next year. The petit club doesn't work for our 3 year old though it's a bit frightening and i think an au pair would be a better option for us.

Room Tip: If you have kids ask for rooms in the A wing, which is closer. I think this is their aim anyway.

I've never written a review before but have decided to do so for 3 reasons:
1. Lovely hotel with a great atmosphere, nice food, small rooms but no interconnecting rooms. A pain when you are trying to get your three children and yourself ready for skiing in the morning. That the positives out of the way - There was a terrible smelling toilet in our room! Complained 3 times to the hotel but they never resolved the problem.
2. Be very careful about baggage. Club Med never told us of baggage limit of 1 bag per person, and it wasn't on any paperwork. We landed up having to pay about £150 in baggage costs for our ski boots. Not impressed as we didn't actually have big suitcases and in total our baggage weight was less that the total allowed!! If we had known in advance we would have packed differently. We have tried resolving the problem with Club Med but they don't want to reimburse us for that additional cost. While it may be trivial, I am at the point of putting them in the small claims court as they are being big headed about our complaint. I have never personally taken anyone to court before, however, I have through my business and I am quite confident that a judge would rule in our favour.
3. Serre - Chevalier has lovely skiing but getting up the mountain was time consuming and very frustrating. The ski back to the hotel at lunch times and at the end of lessons was a pain.
All in all we enjoyed the holiday but will think twice of booking with clubmed again.

Room Tip: long way to walk back and forth to the rooms. Try and get a room close to reception.
