“What a disappointment...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

We love Sarikamis, the ski slopes, views and snow are all great...
After many years of staying happily in the Camkar hotel, we thought this year we would go upmarket and stay in the five star Ce-Mar Toprak hotel next door.
What a disappointment. The rooms were boiling hot and the handles on the windows removed to stop people opening them, We complained several times but nobody cared, in the end we managed to wedge open the window slightly (with force) but still found it too hot to get a good nights sleep.
The safe didn't work, again nobody seemed to care. There was enough fluff under the bed to keep a few billion mites happy, not to mention the old slippers somebody had left behind!
The Hamam and sauna were OK but the pool was too cold to use and the steam room out of use.
The restaurant was under staffed, the food was of no way 5 star quality and the glasses continually dirty. We were not allowed to take our left over bottle of water up to our room after dinner as we were told they refill them to use again.
The hotel rooms are large and with new new management and educated staff this hotel has potential. I just hope somebody comes along soon to save it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window that can be opened.

We came to learn how to ski and the team here is very well organized. Ali Sait is an excellent teacher. Ski rental is 40TL per day and the ski pass is included in the room. Lessons are 120TL and you need cash or make a bank transfer. Chair lift is 100m from the door. The slopes are good and varied. Good place for kids to learn and lots of families are staying here. Air is very dry!

First of all the location of the hotel and the skii area is wonderfull..this is almost the 7th time i stay in this hotel...unfortunately there are not many alternatives in this area...
The 5 star rating is exagurated...definetely more than 3 less than 4 is the real ranking...
The property is wonderful...though the service is the worst what you can get from such a nice hotel...
Staff is inexperienced...managment is not good...insufficient staff...small things can be solved quickly and easily however you see due to managerial deficiencies are not solved...
Nothing works properly...
The best service in the hotel is the ski room...alll staff very professional...as well ski teachers...
Especially Ali Sait Hoca....
Also the kind belboy at the entrance Serhat Kurt..they should move him to the reception...he is smart, arranging eveything quickly, knowing what to do...
9 oclock in the morning ...only one personel at the reception...peack time for checkouts...etc...anyway...beeing said...this is the only good alternative in this area....
Unfortunately...

We have travelled to Kars as a group of 6 for a 4-days long weekend. The hotel is really nice. Team members are friendly. Reception desk staff is not well-educated but they do their jobs. Lobby is spacious. Rooms are large. Bathroom is really one of the largest ones I have seen. Food is delicious. There is broadband internet all around the hotel and it is free. Especially the ski track is very nice. I am a boarder and the connected tracks are pretty suitable for snowboarders. There is no t-bar, only chair lifts (which is good). This is preventing the long ques. The snow is different here, they call it crystal snow. When you are skiing, it is like you are cruising on oil, it is greasy (esp in the morning). In the evening, the snow flakes are freezing and it is becoming harder to ski.
There are a few negative points as well. The ski track has no protection signs or barriers. This may not be related with the hotel however if you are rookie, beware and get prepared. The ski-passes are included in the room rate. Yet they are limited. They give you a ski-pass with 15 passes. You use them in the morning and have to stop by the Front Desk and change the pass during the lunch time. In addition, every evening you return the ski-pass and collect the new one in the morning.
The weather is chili. It was around -5 in the day time and around -18 during the night when we were there from March 14 to 18. Nevertheless, it is not humid so you do not feel that cold.
Overall Sarikamis region is a very good alternative and Toprak Hotel is a pretty nice ski resort. I will go back.

Perfect location and well built hotel with very poor management.

Everything seems to be in place yet, nothing works or works very poorly.. There is a swimming pool without a lifeguard (deep pool with nearly 2 meters in the deep end), no towels, poor dressing rooms, showers, unattended jakuzi (no sure if it works, we were unable to getting the jets working), mediocre food, room service is a peculiar (they came to my room knocking at 10:30 p.m. for no reason, walked into my room to fix my door to the balcony for which I had not placed any complaint, walked into my room to deliver a bathrobe without any request), the magnetic key to the room needed resetting every day, ski passes had to be replaced every day because they are loaded with only 15 tokens, which may finish before the end of the day and leave you begging from fellow skiers one ride to get back to the hotel, you cannot purchase insurance for rental skis and have to pay stiff fees, if you happen to damage their inferior quality ski equipment.

On the bright side, you ski in an area surrounded with yellow pine trees. However, there is only 2 (#3 & #5) and sometimes 4 (#3, #5, #8 & #9) slopes, if and when they can manage to get the #8 and #9 working.

Also, they are building new hotels hastily just next door to Toprak Hotel (one by the current manager of the Toprak Hotel), another by an investor/hotelier from the Aegean coast both are new additions to the existing Toprak Hotel and CamKar hotels, which are situated literally under the armpit of one another.

So, if you are curious about the area, it is better to visit sooner than later because it will be dangerously crowded in the already limited slopes of Sarikamis, once the new hotels are up and running..

Room Tip: A corner room would give you somewhat more vista if you can get one.

The location of Toprak is excellent if you're a keen skier and like to be only 2mins walk from the lift to really lovely slopes. Staff were friendly and helpful, rooms clean, food plentiful (buffet in ski season) and good quality.

There are currently only 2 hotels at the base of the slopes and Toprak does offer more facilities than the other smaller one.

I found the architecture of the hotel disappointing however. It is cavernous, dark, not exactly uplifting and doesn't sit well in it's (very beautiful) environment. It seemed to me like a wasted opportunity to build something more thoughtfully respectful of its location.

That said, if you're only there for the skiing then it makes a convenient and comfortable choice.

Toprak Hotel is a nice place in a nice ski resort in Sarikamis as one of the beautiful resorts in Turkey.
The accomodation and hotel access to the resort is easy and there is a private track from the hotel to the beginning of the track.
The restaurant and the variety of the food they offer is not as a 5 star hotel and also the possibility of chosing different types of drinks is not as much as I was expected.
Cleanness of the rooms and services was good.
The Disco which is located in the ground floor was not as warm as I expected and I couldn't find many visitirs coming there at night.
The hotel provides you a "Ski pass card" which you can use the tele sieges of the resort for free. The validity of the cards is for one day and for the next day you need to charge it at the reception desk.
The hotel has a swimming pool, spa and massage center, sauna, billiard tables, ...
I recomment this hotel for the ski lovers who wanted to experience a nice stay in a lovely view skiing resort.
