“An enjoyable experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

I have just returned from Madidi National Park and spent 3 nights at the Chalalan Eco Lodge. I agree with the other reviewers in terms of the amazing location and the once in a life time experience you will have here and would like to pass on some tips to make your stay more enjoyable:
Take your rain gear, it is after all the jungle
Do not bother to take any personal electrical appliances, eg hair dryer, shaver. There are no electrical outlets in the rooms
The generator starts up at about 1830 for several hours. There are electrical outlets in the dining room. You can recharge iPads, cameras etc over dinner.
If you have a sweet tooth, then bring some chocolate bars and lollies to sustain you. Dessert is served with dinner and lunch but consists of fruit - not great for the sweet tooths amongst us.
Take more socks than you think you need. After rain the paths become very wet and there are plenty of puddles for the stray foot to land in.
If you have a telephoto lens for your camera just keep it on. The monkeys, birds, etc are usually way up high in the trees. Your best chance of getting that perfect picture is with a telephoto lens.

Enjoy

Dear.

We’re very pleased for your review, which also point out some important details. Rainforest light conditions require good lenses, even to take pictures of the most common mammals as peccaries. Trekking shoes are recommended, our 40 kms. trail system, blazed through well drained areasfor easier hiking, is any way subject to high humidity. Chocolate bars will be more available, as it is also possible to require cakes, fruits and other specific food to take as a snack along the trail, please ask the guide, he will be happy to help you.

Thank you very much.

When you go to Chalalan, know that you are being transported to an amazingly remote paradise in the Amazon (you will understand after the 6 hour canoe ride). The rainforest around the lodge is completely intact and brimming with all sorts of wildlife and plants. In one day we were mobbed by a troop of squirrel monkeys, stalked by a huge herd of peccaries, canoeing amongst piranhas and caimans, and viewing impossibly beautiful birds. You will see more stars here than anywhere else. Perhaps the best part of the lodge is the phenomenal native staff. The entire staff is composed of Tacana indigenous people, and the guides knowledge of the forest and the animals is astounding. This is by no means a luxury eco-lodge (no internet, cell service/phones, nada..) but my family and I will definitely remember this incredible journey for the rest of our lives! If you want to experience untouched natural beauty through the eyes of an Amazonian tribe, do not hesitate to visit Chalalan!

Very nice environment, you can see monkeys and woodpackers whithin 20 metres
In Chalalan you are as far as possible in the Madidi amazon
The lodges are little paradises and the private ones very very romantic!!!

+/-
I think the price is a little bit high for what you get

The food wasn't that diverse and for big eaters not enough (soup, fried chicken/meat, rice, cooked vegetables), only the breakfast was healthy, diverse and an "all you can eat buffet"
If you are doing a long hike of 8 hours you get lunch in a box which exists of cold chicken and fries... Beside that it isn't nice to eat cold food, it's even not enough when you are a whole day walking! So... bring some snickers/bananas with you for extra energy (you can't buy them there)

Room Tip: For a really romantic experience; book a private lodge! Than you will live in "your own house&q...

Dear guest

Thanks for your nice and helpful review. Chalalan area has been protected by our community people since before the Madidi national park creation and we are happy to share this unique environment with our guests, every one of them adds an important tribute for its protection. We treasure reviews like yours, specific observations about the service are always a real support to our work. We are aware of the how important is meals quality and constant feedback is essential (including vegetarian menu) ( also due to remote location) for a community-run Lodge. But is part of our commitment. In order to satisfy personal requirements. we ‘d be happy to see you again in Chalalan Lodge.to enjoy our rainforest ,culture and biodiversity.

Sincerely Chalalan

If you are debating whether or not to visit Chalalan, my advice would be to definitely go. The staff are warm and welcoming. The food is great. The rooms are basic but comfortable. The guided walks in the jungle are interesting and beautiful. but for me the highlight of our 3 day stay was the night time boat trip on the tiny lake. Thousands of stars, absolute silence, a glimps of a caiman or birds eye caught in the torch light. Unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of our South American adventure.

Four of us did the 3 days 2 night stay. We were sad to leave, but it was long enough to experience the jungle and the beauty that is Chalalan.
The staff were amazing. Attentitive, kind, thoughtful and good fun.
The accommodation is very comfortable and the food is tasty.
The guide was thoroughly knowledgeable and totally in tune with the jungle and its flora and fauna. We learnt so much and enjoyed every minute of it.
I highly recommend paying that bit extra to stay here - the funds go to the local community and you can't get a better "eco" friendly experience.

Our guide had a great sense of humour and made our experience fun (he even took us rafting on the river). We saw some amazing wildlife and the environment was very relaxing. The food was amazing (and we're vegetarian so a bit picky). The accommodation was superb. Highly recommended!
