“Not a place I would chose to stay.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

I bought an Amazon Deal to stay at the Dukes Head. On calling to make a booking the male I spoke to was very unhelpful, abrasive and rude. My deal was for a two night stay with en suite.
I was told the only time I could have this was March 10th or 11th. The deal I had was not due to expire until July. I was told the bathroom was at the end of the corridor and when I asked how long the corridor was I was told it was long.

At no stage was this man helpful or pleasant.

Amazon have refunded my payment they were great. I would not wish to stay at a Hotel that this person was connected to.

Firstly I must start by saying that my score is not based on the food/drink or even a visit as sadly I never actually got that far.

I purchased a two night break through amazon local 3 days ago (February 16), which was valid for stays through to the end of July. I called the inn today (JUST THREE DAYS LATER) to book a visit for June (4 months away) to be told that only dates available are four days in mid March and three days in the first week of April and these were all midweek. When i seemed surprised I was told "the deal had been going for two weeks" like it was my fault that I didn't phone up immediately.

THE VOUCHER WAS VALID TILL THE END OF JULY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was nothing in the terms and conditions that stated a date that booking needed to be made by and certainly not one which stated it had to be made immediately. Anybody with a voucher for a stay valid until 31 July with think they do not have to book immediately. Could you imagine purchasing a voucher on 16 February that was valid until the end of July that had terms of "booking must be made by 19 February"??????

I would expect (as is normal common practice with vouchers) that the owners restrict the number of dates available so that they can fill their quiet periods and so this is all they offer you. I very much doubt that they have no vacancies at all through to the end of July.

Actually i have just checked their online booking on their website for availability for the weekend in June i wanted and they have 2 rooms available. APPALLING!!!!!!!DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!

I hate to kick small businesses especially as i use to run a similar business in mid Wales however this inn's position on customer service is disgusting. They want your money but only when it is convenient for them. I am hugely disappointed by their approach and feel conned into purchasing a deal online that was not as described. All the fine print said was "limited availability at weekends."

If I had tried to book after 3 April (the latest date i was told there was availability) then I would have been unable to book any date. Even though the voucher was valid for another 4 months. Unbelievable approach to business.

On a positive note.......Thankfully i called amazon local and they were very VERY apologetic, confirmed that the terms and conditions mentioned no such restrictions on booking or deadline for booking and refunded the money immediately.

This place might be fantastic (I never found out) unfortunately the owners attitudes to customer satisfaction (or potential customer satisfaction) certainly aren't.

We had a meal here with friends lovely place and food was excellent. Monday madness menu is a bargain. Although the 2 staff didn't seem customer orientated everything was plonked down and lady taking ordered it all seemed abit too much effort maybe having a bad day, place was very quite food lovely shame about service.

We dined at the Dukes Head on new years eve with the family, lovely pub with excellent food especially the fish. Good varied selection of food on the menu, puddings also worth a try. The bar also had to good section of beers including guest beers from the area. Family friendly.

Under new licensees for the past 12 months this steadily improving, family run, village-centre pub/Hotel is worthy of a visit.
Among other improvements following its recent refurbishment the new landlord has introduced some new real ales on rotation and these are reasonably priced.

Well behaved dogs are still allowed in the pool-room bar, where bar meals can also be taken.

Alas not open at lunch time during the week (except over Christmas) roast Sunday lunches are currently £6.95 for one course, and there is also a full a la carte menu available and every evening too, with special offers on during the week.
Our latest visit a week before Christmas was for a family birthday and 8 of us were accommodated very warmly, in the welcoming dining area with its real fire, and all enjoyed their choice of meals with some lovely deserts available too.
Four of the party stayed overnight and were very complimentary about their 2 rooms.
Yes we shall return.

Room Tip: I believe all but one bedroom is en suite. At least one has a large king sized bed. Both rooms exper...

Stayed in late November on a voucher deal and used the Dukes Head as a base for an afternoon in Carlisle.
Dropped our stuff in the room and caught the 13.11 train into Carlisle on the Settle to Carlisle line. Had a great afternoon round the bars of Carlisle before catching the train back about 6ish.
Quick wash and change before eating in the pub. We had a table reserved which was fortunate as the place was packed which is always a good indicator of the calibre of the food.
Our meals were great, lots of choice and very well cooked and presented. Staff were fab, had a quick chat with the owners who are going through a refurb program and making a good job of it too.
Our room was fine if a little small and the bathroom was dated but probably due a refurb soon.
My sister in law stayed in a much bigger room and said it was also fine.
We had a nice weekend and are going back in the new year.
