“August break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

We recently spent two nights at the Dukes Head Inn. About a year and a half ago we called for a quick drink and were pleasantly surprised to find the Dukes Head had recently had a very tasteful makeover. We were made very welcome by Clive, Julie and all the staff who always found time for a chat. Our room was clean and comfortable with all the usual extras. The breakfasts and evening meals were absolutely beautiful and would recommend that anyone in the area should stop and sample the food and hospitality.

Room Tip: There is some early morning road noise, so anyone with sleep problems should request a room to the r...

Needed a nice pub to have an evening meal after along days traveling . The guy on reception said we should give this place a try.
Located in a very pretty village the pub is easy to find with plenty of parking to the rear. As soon as we walked in the staff were very keen to help and asked straight away if we wished to dine.
Very clean dining area close to the bar, a couple of real ales on draught. Just the right amount to choose from from the menu. Very reasonable prices, homemade steak and kidney pie £9.95, ribeye steak £14.95, lovely ribs £8.95 for examples.
I had the steak which came with homemade chips, mushrooms, homemade onion rings, and a great salad. It all looked scrummy.
Really enjoyed it and glad we went.

Booked all their rooms 6 months in advance for my sons wedding in May. Arrived on the Friday to be told that if we didn't get back by 12 midnight on the Saturday we would be locked out. Explained to them that as there were no taxis in the village we had mini buses booked for 12-30 was told that we couldn't expect them to wait up till all hours, the conversation was very unpleasant and were told if it wasn't suitable we could go elsewhere - with less than 24 hours to the wedding no much of an alternative.
Eventually they agreed to the time but the damage was done.
My sister- in law called in on the Sat morning after travelling from Southport and asked if it was possible to have coffee and toast, as it was after the breakfast time, again not a very friendly welcome was charged £3.90 and an extra £5 for the inconvenience.
The breakfast was top rate and the rooms where well decorated and warm but the reception a little bit frostie. Not the best way to attract custom.
My son and his party stayed at the fox - a totally different atmospher, they couldn't do enough for them or us when we called in for coffee, would certainly recommednd them

This booking had been made by previous owner, on our website it states that we close at 12 midnight, also previous owner stated he offers a taxi service, we do not and previous owner had also taken the deposit with him from this booking. We do not give keys to the front door out and we do close at 12 midnight.

Very good value small country innserving a good range of local ales with friendly staff and locals . Food served up is excellent the breakfasts are lovely.
Armathwaite is a quiet village in the beautiful Eden valley and is a pleasant drive away from Carlisle or Penrith There is also a station in the village .
I do think some of the rooms are a bit dated but think the landlord is about to begin a renovation .

Stopped off here for an afternoon whilst visiting the Settle and Carlisle railway. After missing our train mid afternoon, we popped back in here to while away the rest of the afternoon. The Landlord even lit the coal fire for us, a real extra treat and great customer service. Little disappointed we could not get any food (did not start serving until 18:00hrs), having been on the go since 07:00 that day but nevertheless, the beer was good!

Room Tip: we did not stay overnight.

After a long local walk we decided to give this pub a try, again with the dog. We were the only people in the pub but it was early evening, and we sat in the snug, which was warm and welcoming. The barmaid was really friendly and not at all upset when my dog knocked down all the wooden logs stacked by the fireplace! She came over and sat and chatted about all things dogs, a really lovely, friendly girl. Hubby was beside himself as his phone was able to get full iCloud coverage, so even though we were spending the weekend 'getting away from it all' he could log on and surf a while!!! Lovely, friendly local pub, definately recommend, especially if you are a dog-owner!
