“Great riverside setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

We met up with friends from Scotland (halfway between and a lot more comfortable than Hadrians Wall). Excellent food; excellent beer; friendly service. A good base for local walking or wider excursions by car to the Wall or northern Lakes. Walking distance of station for Settle-Carlisle line.
Bedroom en-suite facilities of a high standard - just what is needed after a day out in the countryside. Cosy bar with open fire and unpretentious decor. Definitely to be recommended.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 3 with a great view across the meadows to the river Eden

We stayed here on our way back from Scotland and took advantage of their special offer for 2 nights dinner, bed and breakfast which was fantastic value. The bedroom was cosy, bright clean and had been refurbished but was in keeping with the charm of the aged building. Both breakfast and evening meals offered plenty of choice of good quality food with generous portions. The pub and restaurant are cosy, warm places to relax and enjoy the friendly atmosphere created by all the staff. Will definitely return.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 4 which was a standard size double.

This was one of two pubs that was very close to the cottage we were staying in for the weekend. It came recommended as we were able to take the dog in after a long walk. Real fires and comfy seating and dog bowls full of water - everything catered for. The pub also does take-away food and the menu is quite good, however, we did not eat there. There was a family who were eating and the food did look delicious though! Proper country pub, definately re-visit when we return to the cottage.

This is an excellent place to stay when in the Carlisle/Hadrians Wall area- well worth a detour. A true village inn steeped in character offering lovely accommodation, good food, good ales/wines in a delightful spot. The bedrooms have ensuite facilities of a high standard. Breakfast is delicious. The bar area has a good 'early doors' atmosphere, and the former stable block makes a welcoming dining area.

Enjoyed 2 meals here and both were lovely... Had the Cumberland chicken which was cooked to perfection and juicy though the boiled potatoes were hard. Had steak pie which was tasty but lots of pastry... Big portions and a little pricey but worth a visit

Like many other reviewers, we chose the fox and pheasant as a suitable stop on our trip from Cornwall to the Highlands. And what a good choice it was! The setting is stunning right by the river Eden, and on the outskirts of the village. Our room was well furnished, spotless and comfortable, with little noise from passing traffic so that a good sleep was assured. Homely dining room serving excellent food with good portions and plenty of choice. Young staff, all keen to help, smiley and unobtrusive. Tip top Cumberland breakfast set us up well for the long leg up to Mull. Our visit was enhanced by numerous other visitors, all enjoying and contributing to the atmosphere. A British pub at its best; beat it if you can, Jonny Foreigner!
