“Excellent food, great atmosphere, pleasant staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

We ate here for a birthday meal on Saturday evening and it was a success all round.

We had a table of 6 booked for 8pm. With it being a Saturday evening the place was pretty packed but with a nice atmosphere. If you wish to eat win a restaurant with a separation from people just out for a drink then this is probably not the place for you as you are in amongst it.

Some of our table chose the festive menu, which was excellent value for money, and some chose off the regular menu. The staff were very accommodating with allowing us to "mix 'n' match" some of our choices which was very helpful! Food came within reasonable time and courses were just the right time apart. Portion sizes were generous and the quality of food was excellent - nobody could fault any of their dishes.

Value for money - £19.95 for 3 courses on the festive menu - can not complain at that (especially with portion sizes). Regular pub meal prices - £16 for sirloin, £8.95 for pie chips and peas etc. definitely value for money with home-cooked quality of food and size of portions.

Only negatives of our evening - table service could have possibly been a little quicker, at one point one of the table waited 15 minutes for a drink. The desserts also took quite some time from ordering to arriving at our table. I would like to stress the drink waiting time was probably due to it being a Saturday evening as mentioned previously.

Would definitely go back and would definitely recommend!

Thank you for a lovely evening!

“Nice meal ,service a bit slow”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013 via mobile

Had our office lunch here ,with a party of thirty people, food was good, well presented, however the waiting staff were in short supply , seemed to have only two girls serving. This meant long waits between courses . Having said that, nice atmosphere , good beer on the pump

“Very enjoyable.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2013 via mobile

My wife and I along with good friends (B&C, J&S) enjoyed a very nice meal here, the good choice of food was well presented, hot and plenty of it.
Very nice staff and a relaxed atmosphere.
YES we will go again.

“Second disappointment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

I initially attended with a large group on Fathers Day in June and was hugely disappointed with poor service, reduced food availability and poor food standards. After talks with the manager then the bill was halved with free dessert/coffee. Given months that had passed we thought we would try again as the Venus itself is beautiful, in a lovely setting and has the potential to be a brilliant restaurant.

We went for my partner's birthday where as a surprise my in-laws who are rarely able to attend birthday functions due to their other disabled son came. We were initially kept waiting for some time at the front desk after a change of plan regarding no requirement for wheel chair access as the table that had been allocated was still in use. We therefore were moved elsewhere, the waitress was welcoming so initially an improvement on our previous visit. Issues began to arise when at 4pm they had run out of roast dinners on a Sunday bearing in mind they are open until fairly late and seemed very busy!! Instead steak dinners were ordered. Started turned up swiftly with no problems a long time lapsed until main whereby my father mentioned that some time had passed. Immediately dinners slowly flowed to the table at which one dish was cold. Cold food is inexcusable!! Further to that the steak dinners weren't cooked to requirement. Request of well done turned up with blood in the centre, again not acceptable. To save embarrassment the in-laws didnt say much instead pushed the dinner around their plates to which I could see little enjoyment. On the previous visit I also had issues with the steak being cooked poorly and ridiculously fatty for the price that you pay!!

It resulted in a word with the on duty manager who was extremely helpful, offered another reduced bill, free dessert/coffee and endless apologies. The staff are very helpful but I feel sorry for them that their chefs and product are letting the side down. The prices should mean good quality food but its not reflected in any way. Shame to be disappointed again.

“lovely front of house staff - but painfully slow”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

Five of us came for a special lunch on Wednesday 30th October. The two staff that seemed to be covering the whole restaurant were very helpful and friendly. However, we waited about an hour for our main courses, which was painful. The manager seemed to be on the phone for a lot of the time. It seemed that the restaurant was desperately understaffed. Food was not great. Never again.
