“Taste of luxury!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

First and foremost if you want a happy, high quality experience - book this hotel. Attentive, friendly, knowledgeable staff, top quality food and a beautiful, clean comfortable bedroom.

The choice of two eateries is absolutely great; Katie's Bar and the Restaurant. Katie's Bar is bright, welcoming and modern with interesting traditional quirks - and a mix of other hotel guests, tourists staying elsewhere on the island and locals. The menu is reassuringly specialised (i.e. fits on one chalk board) and is packed with fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant is a more formal room and has a still-specialised, wider ranging and even more luxurious menu. Food was served quickly and efficiently - though there was never any sense of it - or us - being rushed. While Katie's Bar is highly unlikely to disappoint, it is absolutely worth treating yourself to a meal in the Restaurant too. Check out the hotel website for example menu/prices and, if eating here more than once in a week (we happily ate between the two eateries every night we stayed) check with staff as to when the bar menu changes if you want different choices, especially if you are a veggie. However, if you love all foods (local meats, fresh fish...) then you'll be spoiled for choice anyway; pick up the phone and get booked in!

The staff are so helpful, every meal is catered to your liking and, being pregnant during my stay, I was full of requests and questions - every single one of which was answered by the staff who, when necessary, checked with the chefs. I really appreciated the lengths that were gone to for me; even managing to get Clootie Dumpling minus the whisky (imagine even requesting that on Islay!) - but still with the honey cream! YUM!

It was also great to chat to staff of all ages, all of whom had a love, pride and passion for their island. While given the space to enjoy our holiday as a couple - we also had a lovely sense of actually being among islanders and their lives.

As mentioned, the bedroom was beautiful, comfortable and very well looked after by the housekeeper throughout our stay. Wee touches such as the delicious local tablet on the coffee tray and the local soap, shampoo and shower gel were so wonderful that we sought out the shop they came from so we could bring home these sensory memories of our stay at Bridgend.

A tasty breakfast is served in the Restaurant, a lovely room - and like the whole hotel; homely and yet luxurious. Some guests even chose to eat breakfast in the beautiful gardens as the sun was shining.

The Strath Lounge is a relaxing area to sit and enjoy an aperitif or, indeed, after dinner dram or coffee. The sun was spilling in the windows during our Summer stay but I can imagine it would be equally enjoyable with the cosy fire going on a Winter's night. We also enjoyed the homebaking that is available in the lounge in the afternoon.

You really want for nothing in this hotel - an absolute gem in the midst of a stunning, vibrant Scottish island. We genuinely did not want to leave! Manager Lorna and her excellent team ought to be very, very proud.

First and foremost all the staff (particularly Lorna) wish you all the very best of luck over the next few months! Without saying any more in public, you will know what I am referring to.
This is a really kind review, thank you very much. All Lorna and her team aim to do is the best they can to ensure you have as good a time as possible on Islay. Kevin, the head chef (newly engaged to Rasa the assistant manager) produces a menu of freshly cooked locally sourced food. It is lovely to read such enthusiastic comments. We are enjoying a fabulous summer on Islay and I am really pleased you have been part of it.

Great food and good service at the Bridgend hotel, Islay. The food was very tasty as always. Thank you to Greta the barmaid for recommending this place for eating after experiencing poor service in other establishments on Islay. Thanks again.

It is very kind of you to give a specific mention to Greta – she is a native Ileach and has worked at behind the bar at Bridgend for many years; at one stage both her mother and daughter were here too! Few people could give you a better insight to Islay and I am really glad you had a good time at Bridgend Hotel.

Rooms great and service is attentive and its a fine place to stay but The Bowmore House Hotel has a much nicer atmosphere.

The Hotel lounge lacks any warmth much as the bar which is cold slate floors and pine tables and has no atmosphere at all. That's a shame as its nice to have somewhere cosy to harbour when it rains (which it does often and for prolonged spells). The menu feels like its trying to be Edinburgh /London and would be better to hold of to its local identity and authenticity

It's a small point but the pushiness of the host to eat in the hotel, booking you tables you dont ask for and only recommending the Harbour Inn as an alternative smacks of a person who talks too much and does not listen - some people like variety and casual eating at times.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review. I am disappointed that you didn’t have a good experience at Bridgend Hotel, particularly after your later than planned arrival. I know that we were out of gluten free bread on your last morning – perhaps this left a bad taste?
Bridgend Hotel has been owned by the Morrison family since 1853: it has never tried to copy urban styles but has always tried to provide a welcoming and comfortable resting place for visitors to Islay. The slate floor may not be to your liking but it is hard wearing and practical, particularly when the drips from soggy cyclists have to be mopped up or the mud from walkers and sportsmen has to be cleaned – all of whom are more than welcome.
We reserve tables for all our resident guests as a matter of course to avoid the frustration of no table being available. The need to book in advance cannot be stressed enough – you are aware of this as we could only accommodate you for part of your stay. As for recommendations – go to the Harbour Inn for an excellent dinner, go to Bowmore House for an excellent B&B; but come to Bridgend to visit the heart of Islay!

Thank you for such a positive review. I am so glad that we had room for you and you were able to see the distilleries. There really is masses to see on Islay and it is impossible to ‘do the Island’ in a couple of days – we normally recommend a week (at least one distillery a day)! Please book in advance as we are very busy, particularly from May to August; if you want to know a bit more about the Island, let us know and Lorna and her team will help you out.

The Bridgend is almost like a mini-Broadmoor, five-star resort in Colorado Springs, CO, USA. There's only a few guests, and Lorna, the innkeeper, a sparkling lady who makes everyone seem like an invited guest, sat us at a table for two at the excellent, cozy hotel restaurant. About five minutes later she sat a group of about six very blasted Scots dressed in kilts next to us and proceeded to introduce us by name to them. They were all colleagues that make a special local whisky and were as friendly as a basket of puppies, even treating us to a dram of whisky. Lorna called the it the "naughty table", but for us, it was a highlight of our tour of Scotland that wouldn't have happened had Lorna and her staff not treated us as family rather than guests. And they treat everyone that way. You won't regret staying here, and you'll want to stay again when you return.

I was very concerned when I read the first six words of this review: to me – and most other British people – Broadmoor is somewhere where one goes at Her Majesty’s pleasure (and it’s an offer one cannot refuse). However, for those like me with a limited cosmopolitan outlook try Google and you’ll see that this is a huge compliment! The six blasted and kilted Scots are regular customers at Bridgend and as such have become firm friends (Bruce F and party take note). Unlike Broadmoor (either the penitentiary or luxury resort) the Bridgend Hotel is a family owned, locally run Islay hotel. We do our best to look after you and really appreciate it when you acknowledge it in such a generous fashion.

We loved our stay at Bridgend. Lorna and her staff were so friendly and helpful. We were doing a combo family history quest and whisky-tasting adventure...and the Bridgend staff helped us with locations and schedules for everything. The rooms were very nice and very clean as well. The breakfasts were very good, and the dinners were excellent. The day we got in, they stayed open to feed us a marvelous dinner even though it was a little after their normal closing time. Highly recommended.

Thank you for such a kind review. Bridgend Hotel is excellently situated at the centre of Islay (hence the epithet ‘The Heart of Islay’) and is therefore ideally placed to enable exploration of whisky, ancestors, wildlife, scenery and anything else that brings you here. Lorna and her team have a wealth of innate knowledge of Islay; this, combined with locally sourced produce gives you a true flavour of the Island.

My husband (German) and I (Scottish) living in Germany are just back from our trip to Scotland and we stayed at the Bridgend hotel during the Islay whisky festival week (definitely worth a visit!). My husband was so impressed last year with his stay at the hotel that he booked again for this year! We were met with a very warm welcome, enjoyed excellent service, a brilliant breakfast every morning (mmm.. those kippers!) and the room was extremely comfortable. We've booked again for next year! Thank you so much Lorna and your staff (special greetings to Mary) for making the stay so special!

More and more of our guests – like you – are coming back and it is lovely to build up a relationship that ensures you have a really special affinity with Islay. More delicious breakfasts and whisky next year!
