“Best lunch in Crete!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2014

We stopped there on the way to Vai beach (end of July, 2014). I took this option as one for our lunch as I was afraid to have awful food in the beach. And it was 200% worth it! great salad, lamp and chicken wings for kids! We all loved it so much! THANKS to great and true comments to TRIP ADVISOR!!!

“Traditional cretan food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2014

...in traditional cretan low prices. Surrounding is nice and is convenient to eat there after visiting Vai beach or after Erimoupoli beach (even better). Mainly meat dishes in generous portions and very good local wine/

“Nice dishes,beautiful place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2014

Delecious steak, overcooked pasta, prices a bit higher than the nearby restaurants.Overall really nice food but there were no receipts at any table, I had to ask for it.For this reason I will never go there again.

“What a (pleasant) surprise! A garden of culinary delights.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2014

If you go to Vai, you are probably going to the beach. Vai boasts a more or less sandy beach with dense thickets of palm trees which makes it unique on the island. Next to the beach there are a bunch of snack bars and restaurants that flash "tourist trap". Economists have studied the syndrome of poor quality of restaurants in touristy areas and they reach the rather obvious conclusion that the food service in such places is cruddy and overpriced because the owners do not expect much in the way of repeat business.

Now Metohi Vai is located close to the side road leading to the beach, close enough to have made me suspicious that it would be just like all the other "tourist trap" places, offering lousy food, dodgy ingredients, all prepared in a slapdash fashion. However I was hungry so I thought I might give it a try. What a surprise! I would say "shock" but I don't want anyone to think there was anything unpleasant about the restaurant. On the contrary; Metohi Vai is a veritable garden of culinary delights.

The restaurant claims to have been in business since 1709. I can't attest to the validity of that claim but the welcome was most certainly traditional and gracious. It's a family business and it shows. The quality of the ingredients is topnotch and the preparation is impeccable. The helpings are generous and there can be no complaints about attentiveness.

The food is what it claims to be be: traditional, unpretentious, full of the fresh flavors of the land. This is unadulterated family cooking; there is no affectation of celebrity gourmet cuisine. I do not know if local families eat as well as the guests at Metohi Vai do; they probably save such treats for Sundays. But it is the kind of food that reminds us of the pleasure of the good life and the richness of the fruits of the earth.

One last thought. Seems a shame that the restaurant is stuck away in a corner of the island. The food is well worth it but it is an awful long way to drive.

“Go there for Cretan cuisine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013 via mobile

This is a very good restaurant! It serves local cuisine that Cretans find very good. Very nice decor, discreet and very polite service. You must absolutely try the cretan salad (be carefull it's big) and the xygalo cheese!
