“2nd visit and definitely recommend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

If you like the country house atmosphere, this is good without paying the prices more often associated. The hotel is the remaining part of what used to be a huge mansion it seems. There are fantastic views from the hotel and it is worth getting a room with a view if you can. The rooms are large and the bathroom well equipped. A full length mirror is provided in the bedroom (always useful). There is a generally restful feel to the place overall. The dining room , where breakfast and dinner are both taken, has a great view, especially if you sit close to the window. The meals I had were excellent, especially the dinner. The staff I met were all very friendly and helpful. On the negative side, the décor in the bedrooms is recently done but old fashioned (thinking of 2 stays in the hotel). This is definitely not chic or boutique. The décor in the public rooms is also traditional but looks suitable for this sort of place and is comfortable. TIP - this hotel can be difficult to find so do recommend arriving in daylight!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view

This is a really difficult review to write. The building is v attractive, the location is wonderful, miles from anywhere in the rolling hills of Devon. Rooms were of decent size, comfortable and clean. Every thing in the rooms worked. Car parking is plentiful. The overall impression, however, is that this hotel is overdue modernisation. The service is variable, some staff were v helpful, others less so. Some meals were v good, others disappointed their diners. This place just needs a bit of a boost.
I would happily stay here again but at these prices, in this area, I would prefer to see it have a bit of a makeover.

Room Tip: Avoid 20 and 21. There is a creaky floor in the corridor outside these rooms.

Recently stayed here for one night on route to Cornwall. Although I booked late I'm really pleased that I chose this hotel. I did manage to find the hotel Ok, although I wouldn't fancy trying to do so in the dark. All of the staff were really helpful and the deputy day manager was always around to provide any assistance required. The grounds and building are both attractive and there was a little courtyard which was pretty. Food in the restaurant was very good although the restaurant itself didn't have much atmosphere. The room itself was very comfortable and of decent size. Tea and coffee were provided in the room which is always appreciated.

The hotel was great, very quite as out in the sticks. The staff were very friendly and because of
our mix up in booking the did not know about our dog but could not have been more helpful in reassuring us it was okay and we just had to pay £7.50 per night for him. We had a meal in the restaurant which really good and great value for money. On the whole great stay.

I hav ejust spent 5 days over the last 5 weeks staying here, it was very quite and was surrounded by buitiful countryside. The service was always very friendly and quick, if Chef had it he would cook it which was a change from the menu. The weather was very warm so the evening was spent sat out in th egarden or courtyard watching the birds flying home and watching the sun go down

Room Tip: I stayed in room 32 every time, great view with th esun shine through in th emorning

The hotel location is a nice hidden retreat. The staff are pleasant and accommodating. The food is reasonable, but nothing inspiring. The hotel is old, which is part of its charm, but many areas are in need of a bit of TLC.

Free WiFi throughout is a plus.

Spent 6 days at the end of April 2013. Food cooked to order (a pleasant change), served by pleasant and cheerful staff. Front of house staff most helpful (thank you Lesley and Cheryl in particular). Room clean, comfortable, and Wi-fi worked fine. Local bird life suicidal on narrow roads (like some drivers) but no deaths resulted.
