“Great family hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

We had an excellent 8 day stay and I would agree with everything by the review before this. This family run hotel really knows how to cater to families! Very friendly, helpful staff that helped us arrange our trips into town and our excursions. Yes it's a bit far from town but we liked it since the air is much cleaner in the countryside anyway. Very reasonable prices for food, laundry, massage etc. Kids really enjoyed the trip and I am seriously considering a return visit sometime. Keep it Golden!

We just returned from our family vacation to Chiang Mai and stay at the Golden Cupids, and we are all sad to be home. What an amazing trip! We cannot say enough good things about Pepe and her family. I know everyone says this, but you TRULY feel like part of the family while you're there. We have 3 children, and when we arrived in our room, they had set up a twin size bed (not a cot, but an actual bed with a headboard!) for our toddler. They had our table set for every meal, complete with a high chair and the juice they knew our children liked. Tuum is a wonderful hostess and was always ready to give us suggestions as to which meal she thought we would enjoy that day--and she was never wrong! Jan had the answer to every question, a taxi called for every occasion, and the masseuses ready at our beck and call--we were so spoiled! We made wonderful friends with the other families visiting there; there is such a sense of community there, it's hard to imagine how that happened in such a short time, but it did. Our children always had someone to play or swim with... It was truly a PERFECT vacation. I hesitate to say such good things because I want this little place to stay a secret :), but Pepe and her family deserve to be rewarded for the wonderful job they're doing.

As far as location goes, I've read reviews that complain about the distance from Golden Cupids to downtown Chiang Mai. We felt that it was the perfect distance! Close enough to get in and do whatever you want to--trips to the zoo, Doi Suthep, Night and/or Sunday walking markets were any easy drive--but far enough to feel like you were in a little secluded spot of heaven. It took us between 20-30 minutes to get into town, just to give you an idea. But GC's location is also nice because you're closer to the areas for elephant excursions, zip lining, etc. because they're all up north! So I felt like it was a perfect in-between spot.

***Just FYI, if you're coming from Bangkok, seriously consider taking the overnight train. We traveled as a family of 5 (our youngest is a toddler), and it was such a fun "adventure"!

Another 3-month idyll from December to February at our Golden Cupids boutique hotel. So what’s so special that we spend all that time year on year?

First, the people.

The Cupids is an all-female establishment apart from the old gardener, Mr Si, and the owner’s son, Tom, who helps out at peak times.

First up is the owner, Peppe. She runs on high-octane adrenaline. She is kindness itself. She cooks marvellously; if you like Thai food this is to die for. If you fancy a change, how about a fillet steak imported from Australia? Or water-buffalo tongue and mash? Spagbog, which one young guest had for every meal including breakfast? Good old fish ‘n chips? And breakfast – comes with the room; full English, tropical fruit, or rice soup anyone? She drives, organises cookery classes, picks you up at the airport (complementary) and generally fixes anything that needs fixing. Husband Peter is getting on a bit, but still keeps a beady eye on maintenance. After all, he owns (with Peppe), designed and built the whole place

Then there’s Jan who does all the admin, cooks, drives, gardens, arranges your tours, books the masseuses, operates the herbal steam bath, arranges the flowers, gathers the fresh veg from the garden for your tucker (which she herself has grown), paints flower pictures, cleans the pool and goodness knows what else. For the total eclipse of the sun, she lent us her welding goggles (the mind boggles!).

Tuum, Peppe’s daughter, is super-chef. Her husband, Toon, is a top cop so don’t complain about the chilli.

Our stay covers Xmas, New Year, and the Chinese New Year plus the fantastic Chiang Mai Flower Show. The Xmas party is an event in itself; American turkey, apple pie – the full Monty, plus spectacular entertainment

And what about the hotel itself ?

Huge rooms with a king size and queen size bed in each; flat-screen TV; mini-bar; free wi-fi. Our room has a balcony overlooking the pool and gardens so that I can watch the prolific bird-life without stirring from my armchair. Nice pool plus massage and steam bath; one of life’s sybaritic experiences is to have an hour massage (about £6), another hour in the steamer and then a splash in the pool to cool off.

About 20 minutes from down-town Chiang Mai, away from the heat and pollution, it adjoins the Mae Jo Agricultural University, so there are plenty of little restaurants and bars within walking distance that mainly cater for the students. If you feel energetic, the hotel will lend you a bike to explore the surrounding countryside

If you don’t believe me go to ‘Golden Cupids Sansai’ on Tripadvisor and see the reviews. It ranks #4 out of over 300 hotels in Chiang Mai province at this time. It is up there with the Mandarin Oriental that has a tariff 10 times higher. It is in the top 10 ‘best value’ for the whole of Thailand

You can get a virtual tour on www.goldencupids.com.

As that notorious Aussie Tourist Board advert said, ‘So where the bloody hell are you?.

(For some inexplicable reason, Tripadvisor has decided that the Cupids is not in Chiang Mai but in Sansai. But Sansi is an inner-ring suburb bordering downtown, an administrative district of Chiang Mai metropolitan area. The acid test is the post code. The Cupids is Chiang Mai 50210. One dismal effect of this is that overseas bookings have gone down because anyone looking for a hotel in Chiang Mai won’t find the Cupids).

Room Tip: room 3 overlooks the pool and garden.

Our stay at Golden Cupids was truly special and we hope to return one day. Pepe and her family made us feel totally at home. The food was amazing and was tailored to our varying needs - adults, children, non-meat eaters. Our trips to the surrounding countryside and to the markets were so well organised and the kids loved the swimming pool which we had all to ourselves. This is the perfect place for a family to stay and visit Chiang Mai and the surrounding area.

My only regret was that one night was not enough. The team are tremendously welcoming on arrival and the rooms are absolutely huge. Mine also had a small balcony area. A sense of calmness pervades the place - both Pepe and Jan having the typically Thai sense of great dignity and welcome about them. I enjoyed an excellent massage outside also. Had to depart 05h30 so missed the breakfast. It's a little way out of Chiang Mai so you will need to travel to get into the city (but taxis are low cost here.)

I loved this hotel. When I first arrived I felt unsure as I'm only used to large hotel chains and this was smaller, quiet and family-run. However when we arrived we were given a warm welcome by the family/staff and they were so friendly. Pepe, who runs the hotel, was the highlight of our stay. She was helpful, kind and the cooked the best food I've ever tasted (and I'm not exaggerating!). She drove us into town and took us round the markets. We could chill out in our hotel room whilst she and the staff cooked our meals. She hired ladies to come round and give Thai massages and provided a laundry service. Most of all, she was a very kind and charitable person.

The hotel itself is very nice and the bedroom are huge. We got 2 rooms between 3 people but realised we didn't need to do this since we didn't know the rooms would be so big. The photos make the rooms look smaller than they actually are, they don't do them justice! They were clean and air conditioned so no need to worry about that.

Had a wonderful chilled out holiday staying at the Golden Cupids. My room was very spacious and spotless and I had a lovely balcony overlooking the pool and gardens. Peppe and her family were very helpful and made me feel so at home. Meals were generous and so delicious and I had the offer of being driven into town by the family if I needed to. Could not fault the hotel and it was wonderful waking up to hear the birds singing and to walk around the grounds. I have been to Chiang Mai on numerous occasions and would definitely go back and stay at the Golden Cupids but would hire a car next time.

Room Tip: Very quiet and peaceful location and about 20-30 minutes drive to the city.
