“We stayed at the Dimora Elena”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

We visited Bovino in August for my husbands Nonna's 100th birthday and stayed at dimora Elena one of the properties owned by Antonio and his family. This was a stunning room right on the main drag in the older part of town. We were there during the festival time so it was loud on some of the nights until about 2am but for the most part it was very quiet.

With this room you get breakfast every day. Because we were always on the go doing tourist trips we didn't take advantage of the breakfast. The shower was gorgeous and is equipped with a hair dryer. The room comes with a small fridge which is great for pop/water. There is no air conditioning in the rooms but if you open the windows at night it cools down. If it's a particularly hot summer though it would be an issue. One thing to note is the windows in Italy do not have screens on them which we here in Canada are used to. We kept the windows open almost the entire stay and had no issues with bugs or flying insects coming into the room.

There is no laundry in the room and I'm not sure if there is in the office area for customers to use. Wasn't a problem for us because we had so many family members with laundry facilities we just did our laundry there.

I would recommend this bed and breakfast 100%. Bovino is a beautiful relaxing little town on the top of the mountain. The views are breathtaking, the restaurants amazing, and the people from Bovino are some of the most hospitable people I've ever met !

We will stay here again if we come back to Bovino to visit our relatives.

From the Naples airport (car rental there an adventure in itself), it is a a pretty solid two-hour drive to Bovino. Once off the A16 autostrada at Grottaminarda, it's about an hour on the SS90 - though it can seem longer. Grottaminarda is at about kilometre marker 12 on the SS90; the turn for Bovino is a bit past kilometre marker 56. The first sign one encounters actually points to Bari, but at the fork, there is a sign to Bovino. This is the SS161 which one follows for a few hundred meters before finding another Bovino sign; this leads onto the SP121 which goes into Bovino proper.

The management of La Casa Del Borgo provided excellent directions when they received our reservation including a phone number with which to speak to someone in English. We will not recite those directions, but will say that Via Roma is a bit of a tight fit (we had a Fiat 500L - it worked, but we certainly would not have wanted anything larger).

The reception for La Casa Del Borgo doesn't happen to have a sign which indicates that is what it actually is (see picture). We parked, a bit illegally, then started asking. One kind gentlemen read the address on our confirmation and took us right to the door. As it happened, no one was there at first, but Serena, who speaks excellent English, appeared at just the right time. She assisted in getting us legally parked, then checked us in.

After the check-in formalities, Serena showed us to the room itself - probably a couple of hundred meters from the reception - and insisted on carrying one of our (heavy) bags. The room was very nice - we had chosen the "Usignolo" because of the view which was indeed very nice. The room itself is well-equipped, a good size, and nicely decorated. It was also quiet for the three nights we were there. Somewhat unexpectedly, the room was serviced each day - a nice touch.

Breakfast is served at the reception area - Serena asked us to view a menu when we checked in and select what we would like. We just stayed with the same selection for our entire time there, and enjoyed saying hello to the townspeople passing by.

We very much enjoyed our stay at La Casa Del Borgo and would not hesitate to recommend it.

Room Tip: "Usignolo" has very nice views from the window.

When I arrived in Bovino I was greeted by Antonio. He situated me in a beautiful, comfortable suite. The room was immaculate, the bathroom large, and with a view overlooking the rolling hills of the surrounding area. My grandmother, and her parents and sisters were all born here. I was the first to visit this amazing village since their immigration many years ago. Antonio, aware of this, along with his friends took the time to give me a tour, and arranged for me to go inside the house where my family had lived. This kind man also took the time to check on me throughout my stay to see if he could be of any further assistance!

This beloved town could not have been more hospitable, warm and welcoming during my week stay. The townspeople treat you like family, and are very sweet! If you want to experience real, authentic Italian culture and stay in stay in a first-rate B&B, come to Bovino and stay with Antonio.

We stayed in Bovino for one night during our trip to Accadia in search of my husband's ancestral roots. We arrived with my husband's 2 parents, his brother, and our 1 year old son. Upon arrival Serena was so sweet and greeted us and showed us to our beautiful rooms right in the heart of the city! We had three rooms that were not right next to each other but each was beautiful and unique in it's own right. One of the rooms had a gorgeous view overlooking the rolling hills of the surrounding area! Serena made sure she took very good care of us and walked us to the best place in town to get dinner and we had a delicious typical italian meal! The town was adorable and the people were very sweet! We felt that we really got to experience the real Italian culture and stay in the heart of one of these quaint small towns! The one thing that would have made it perfect is if they were able to get a baby bed rather than a cot for our 1 year old son, but that didn't damper the mood for us! Thank you Casa del Borgo!

Room Tip: The rooms that are a bit further away have beautiful views but be prepared to walk 5 minutes from th...

My husband and I visited Bovino to see the village where my husband's grandfather was born and lived until the age of 18. His grandfather Paola left the village and emigrated to the US in 1903. We did not know what to expect when we planned this trip. We also were searching for possible family that still lived in Bovino. We were both blessed to make this journey to such a wonderful place after many years of talking about making a visit.

Bovino is a hilltop town with ancient beauty, narrow streets, and a population of about 4,000 residents. It is in the province of Foggia, in the region of Puglia. It has more than 2,000 years of history and holds many treasures for the visitor. There are several ancient churches and is a deeply Roman Catholic community. There is a Norman castle, which occupies a commanding view of the village and a town museum

We stayed at the La Casa Del Borgo and were honored to met Antonio, the owner of La Casa. He has several room and suites, which are all beautifully decorated with charming furnishings. Our room was a suite with an hand painted fresco over the bed. He instantly made us feel at home and we fell in love with our suite full of warmth and charm. The suite was sparkling clean, and our bathroom was large with the most interesting stone ceiling. Antonio took great pride in this suite and wanted to make sure we were happy with our accommodations. We had a wonderful terrace outside our front door where we sat in the evening and drank wine and feasted on the locally made cheeses. We were greeted by the locals as they strolled down the street by our terrace.

We were grateful to have free wifi and were given a choice of a free breakfast in our room or at the local bar. We chose to have breakfast at the bar because we wanted to get to know the town people. The bar, where breakfast is served, is called Vicio Tabacchi and is owned by a wonderful man named Vincenzi. Breakfast consisted of coffee and a pastry which is a typical Italian breakfast. The bar is just down the street from La Casa Del Borgo.

When we told Antonio the purpose of our visit, he went out of his way to try to help us find possible family. He took us to Vincenzi's bar and Introduced us to some locals. There is little English spoken in Bovino, although Antonio and Vincenzi did understand our desire to find family. Vincenzi posted a letter in his bar that I had written in Italian searching for possible family. I know very little Italian but used an online translator to write the letter. Vincenzi was so kind to post the letter and even gave us some delicious cherries as a welcome gift.

Bovino has a wonderful park called the villa communale and is so beloved by the locals. In the evening when the temperature was cooler, the town became so lively with locals strolling the streets and this beautiful park. The park is lined with horse chestnut trees and has benches to sit and enjoy the evening with family and friends. There is also a small cafe in the park that sells gelato, beer and other goodies. We enjoyed our evening stroll and the park as much as the locals. The way of life here was so honest and real. This small Italian town really came alive in the evening in such a good way. Such a refreshing change from life at home.

As far as our family research, we met with Giovanni Anzivino, keeper of the Diocesan Library. In addition to a stunning collection of 10,000 books, manuscripts and other ancient documents dating back to 1100's, the library contains all the birth, marriage and death record of those Bovinese belonging to the church parishes. When we first met Giovanni, he told us he had received our letter several months before and had conducted the research into my husband's family. We were so grateful for his work. Giovanni was a very cordial and gracious man who knew enough English to be of great help to our research. We also spoke with two very helpful ladies at the municipal town hall, who also helped us in our search for family.

We also befriended a little street dog,who we named Paolo and I wanted to take him back to the US with me. He was our constant companion as we walked the streets of Bovino. I expressed my concern for this little dog, who appeared to have no home, and Antonio assured me that he would make sure Paolo would be taken care of with food and water.

Now that we are back in the US, my husband and I miss Bovino and the wonderful people. What a truly magical place that we will never forgot and hopefully will return to some day soon. Before I return I want to learn Italian so I can communicate with the wonderful town's people.

If you are thinking about visiting this town, you will be stepping back into time when people enjoyed their life with simple pleasures like a beautiful park and a pleasant conversation with friend or family. Bovino is a member of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages Club and although it is very high on a hill, it is well worth the trip. Thank you Antonio for your hospitality and warm welcome. We loved your bed and breakfast. We will be back to see you again.

Excellent! It is very well located and with the information provided by Antonio you come easily. We were well received by him and gave us all necessary information, especially for a typical dinner.

We were welcomed to Bovino by Antonio and given a beautiful, comfortable Suite. Our room was immaculate, our bathroom was large and the shower was the best we had in our four weeks in Italy, including some 5 Star Hotels! Our room was also incredibly charming and had a nice porch, where I could watch life go by in Bovino. Antonio should be the President of the "Chamber of Commerce". This gentleman is so nice and friendly you feel like you've come home. He recommended a cute little family restaurant where we had a wonderful typical local meal with wine. It was great and just what we like.

Bovino, is a beautiful little walled town, nicely preserved and they are working hard at keeping it and improving it. Small but well worth the trip up the hill. It is like stepping back a few hundred years but with all the conveniences and warmth you could want.

Please don't miss stopping by Vicio Tabacchi Bar, just up the street at 49 Via Roma, where you will feel right at home with Vincenzi and Simoine. They helped us when we wandered in lost and went to find Antonio for us, even after we insisted we were fine now. We stopped back in on our way to dinner and although, they do not normally sell "Vino Rossa" Vincenzi remembered we like to try the local stuff, went right out and brought back a nice local bottle for us! That's the type of hospitality you can expect from this beautiful little town.
