“Fantastic Resort, Location, People!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2010

Our 2-day stay at the Black Orchid Resort was wonderful in every way. Upon arrival at the Belize International Airport we were met by Dexter who drove us the relatively short distance to the resort. The staff and accommodations were perfect. After a long day of travel is was great to be able to grab a cold drink and sit in the lovely pool that rests along the Belize River. From there we were able to watch the many birds in the area and admire the gorgeous flowers and the beauty around us. Later in the day we spoke to Doug, the owner, who mentioned that it was possible to take a trip out to the Community Baboon Sanctuary that evening. What a wonderful experience! At the sanctuary we were introducted to Robert, who was our guide and led us along the trails in search of the black howler monkeys. We eventually came upon a small troop of 1 male, 2 females, and 2 young. The monkeys are familiar with Robert and he was able to coax them down to take small bits of banana from our hands. A very unique and wonderful opportunity. After a long day we had a great meal at the restaurant and a good nights sleep. The next day we decided to try the zip line and cave tubing tour, which took a total of approximately 5 hours, including travel time between the resort and Jaguar Paw. Ryan was our driver, and like the others we'd met at the resort was very helpful in telling us about the area and answering all of our questions (my husband is a baseball nut and had a lot of questions about the game of cricket which Ryan was able to answer!). He set us up with 2 tour guides who made us first-timers feel very comfortable and we greatly enjoyed the 7 zip lines we completed. What I appreciated most was that we were not rushed and the guides were personally working only with our family, giving us their full attention. After the zip line we immediately moved to the cave tubing with a new guide. Again, we were given a lot of information about the jungle, various trees used for medicinal purposes, animals that we encountered along the way, etc. Everyone seemed to be willing to share their knowledge and appreciation of the natural beauty and wonders of Belize. The river was low and slow (it's the dry season), but still it felt good to be in the water and cooling off after the zip line and short hike to get to the start of the tubing. We were given hard hats with lights and life vests to wear, but given the conditions that we encounted, they really didn't seem necessary (low water levels, wide cave with little chance of banging one's head). But the extra safety measures were appreciated. I highly recommend that you arrange tours through the Black Orchid Resort to take advantage of their knowledge of the area and guides. We ate all of our meals at the resort and loved the food and service. The staff is friendly and very accomodating. The first day we were at the pool without towels, and one of the young women approached me and handed me 4 beach towels. It may seem small, but that gesture set the tone of kindness and friendliness that we met from everyone associated with the resort.

In addition to the excellent food and service, we also enjoyed our room, which was an upper level overlooking the Belize River. As soon as the sun came up the animals started to move and the sounds of the jungle intensified--a great way to wake up and begin the day. We did take the complimentary paddle boat and kayaks out for a short ride along the river, which was fun. I wish we would have chosen to stay another day or two at the resort, but our time was soon up and we were driven back to Belize City to catch our plane to Ambergris Caye. Our driver (whose name I may not have gotten, but who I appreciated and enjoyed speaking to each day) made sure we were checked into our Tropic Air flight before he left us. His kindness epitomized my experience at Black Orchid Resort, which made me feel welcome from the moment we arrived until we departed. I highly recommend that anyone planning a trip to Belize schedule several days at the Black Orchid Resort somewhere during your time in Belize, since I felt that once we crossed over to the island, we were no longer in the "real" Belize, although the island of Ambergris Caye was lovely and we enjoyed our time there as well. But if you want a more authentic experience, stay at the Black Orchid Resort and schedule your tours from there. It was there that we learned the most about the diversity of people and animals of Belize, and experienced the subtropical rainforest that is a natural wonder that has to be seen to be believed. I don't believe we would have had the same experience had we spent our entire vacation on the caye and took tours from there to the mainland. There is so much more to Belize yet to see, and I can't wait to return to experience more. And a stay at the Black Orchid Resort will definitely be on my itinerary!

We got a 5 night package with all meals and most tours included. We added a couple of extras at a very reasonable cost. It was fantastic to put ourselves in Doug's hands - he has done the research to find the best tour operators, and his drivers are very knowledgeable and friendly so getting everywhere is part of the experience.

The trip started out wonderfully with Dexter picking us up at the airport. No worries about getting a car or where we were - it was taken care of. After 2 flights to get there it was fantastic to see a sign with our name on it and know we didn't have to think any more. Beverly checked us in and showed us the room. Our luggage was brought in. The room was simple, with beautiful tiger hand-made quilts, but plenty of room. Maybe we were lucky, but we never needed the air conditioning - having the windows open, even in the heat of the day, was fine. There was great air circulation in the room with a ceiling fan, lots of windows and AC if it was too hot.

There are available kayaks, canoes and paddle boats to borrow. It was fun taking out the kayak and exploring the river. Look out for the crocodile that hangs out in the sun across the river. Listen for the howler monkeys in the trees and you can frequently see them. Iguanas regularly sun themselves on the big tree by the river.

Meals are in the dining room in the main building. The wait staff is very friendly and willing to adjust the menu if needed (fry jacks instead of toast, a bigger bowl of soup for dinner). All you have to do is ask. Our package included all meals so we didn't look at prices, just decided what we wanted and ordered. At breakfast you will probably hear Whodabird, the hotel parrot, who talks while sitting on the tree by the pool.

Our tours were fantastic. The first day we went to Lamanai which involves a 45 min. ride from hotel staff to get to the river. Carlos took us down the river, showing us animals and plants along the way until we got to Lamanai about noon. After a delicious Belizian lunch, we took a tour of the area. We were able to climb 3 pyramids and saw many more and learned much more than we would have on our own, due to Carlos' expertise. We saw our first howler monkeys there (but saw many more before the end of the trip)

The next day we were driven into Belize City to take the water taxi to Caye Caulker to go with Burt to see the Swallow Caye manatee reserve and go snorkeling. Burt is the VP of the group that was able to get the manatee reserve approved by the government and really knows the manatees. We stayed around longer than the other boats (who just got sightings from a distance) and were rewarded with seeing a mother and baby close to our boat. The baby was curious and swam around our boat looking at us - they are so cute! After lunch on St. George's Caye we saw a local aquarium with the local fish that we would see later while snorkeling. Then on to snorkeling at the barrier reef. It was the best snorkeling I've ever done - we saw lots of fish, different corals with Burt pointing out what we missed. We were tired and a little sunburned at the end (make sure your sunscreen is waterproof!), but Dexter picked us up at the end and there were no hassles in returning to the Black Orchid.

The next day we added the Belize Zoo to our zipling and cave tubing package. Ryan gave us a fantastic guided tour of the zoo, pointing out all the animals we missed and giving us more information than what was available on the signs there. Definitely the best small zoo we've seen. Then on to the ziplining - whizzing through the trees on 7 different cables. I may not ever do it again, but I'm glad I went once. My teen-aged daughter and husband both loved it. The cave tubing was unique - Carlos was our guide. On the hike (bring swim shoes or some shoe that can get wet, or you can rent them there) he showed us some of the trees unique to the jungle. The tubing was fun, but I like kayaks better. The water is relatively shallow most of the way so boats wouldn't work, but the caves are large so those that are claustrophobic don't have to worry.

The only reason for the 4 stars for sleep quality was not their fault. On our last night a group of howler monkeys came up and howled up a storm. We saw them later, but they are loud. It's a unique way of being kept up at night and really makes you realize that you are not at home. That being said, my 16 year old daughter slept through all the noise.

Doug and the rest of the staff made the Black Orchid our home away from home. We will definitely be back - there is much more we haven't seen yet in Belize and we want to go back to spend more time relaxing there and seeing more of the country. One of the best vacations we've ever taken - and we have travelled a lot.

We stayed four nights at the Black Orchid Resort before sailing for a week out of Placencia. We found all the staff at the resort to be kind and helpful. Canoing on the Belize River was serene and gorgeous. Day tours were easy to arrange. The three tours we took (Belize zoo, howler monkey preserve, and Lamanai Mayan historic site) were all very interesting, well organized, and fun. The Lamanai trip left the hotel for an hour long drive to northern Belize, a beautiful 25 mile jungle river trip and a couple of hours long tour of the beautiful, well-restored Mayan ruins. The climb to the top of the High Temple pyramid was exhilarating. The climb down was viscerally thrilling! We found 3 days at the resort to be a great way both to sample Belize as well a great way to settle in and get over jet lag.

We stayed here for one night after getting into Belize early afternoon and not traveling westward until the next day. We loved it! The accommodations were clean, spacious, and very tranquil. Nice pool and it is right on the river, The food was very good and the staff outstanding! Bev, who picked up at the airport was very sweet. We will definately be back!

One of the quietest and most lovely vacation spots. We were so pleased with the service, food and the friendliness. Doug, Fallon, and the rest of the staff were so helpful and even communicated with helpful e-mails when we were first planning our trip. We made a couple of day trips while we were there, that turned out to be absolutely fantastic and we were well taken care of. I would recommend staying at Black Orchid for the first few days if you are planning a visit to any of the islands of Belize. It was a great way to start our trip and relax. From Canada, it also helped because there are 3 flights to Ambergis Caye where we were originally going. Therefore, we broke our trip up a bit and were able to only take 2 flights at the beginning and also experience some trips while on the mainland.. The day trips were full but not exhausting. The sounds of the birds and monkeys were soothing at night. We switched to "Holiday Mode" very quickly. our children (14, 12 and 8) also enjoyed Black Orchid. There was just enough to keep them busy (fishing off the dock, exploring, swimming with the local kids in the river) and we went to Lamanai and then next day cave tubing. There was also just enough quietness to help them settle down and relax as well. We had a couple of baby lizards scurry across our wall at bedtime...but we soon embraced the experience and reminded ourselves that we were on holidays in BELIZE! We were only at Black Orchid for 3 days and then we headed to San Pedro, Ambergis Caye. It was a short flight and then we still had a full day in SanPedro where we eventually stayed 6 nights at a house we rented.

The Black Orchid was the last place we stayed in Belize, but would have been the first
if we had known how lovely it was going to be. This conveniently located hotel has well-appointed rooms (most of which overlook the Belize River), a great restaurant and bar, a sweet pool, free use of canoes and paddle boats, opportunities for tours to nearby attractions, a shuttle to the airport, and (best of all) friendly, knowledgeable, helpful service.

My second stay at the Black Orchid was even better than the first because it was like going home again. It is my favorite place to stay in Belize City, precisely because it is NOT IN Belize City but is just a quick 15-minute drive from the International Airport. The grounds are lovely, the food (Belizean Fry Jacks, especially) is great, and the staff is friendly and extremely helpful. I can't recommend it highly enough. It's the best gateway to Belize there is.
