Owner description: Emperor Khai Dinh (1885-1925) ruled Vietnam for 9 years. His tomb took 11 years to complete. Construction began in 1920 and was completed in 1931. Under Khai Dinh, Western culture and influence began to seep into Vietnam. The king himself visited France in 1922. As a result, his tomb has many elements of Western architecture. In fact, of all the tombs, Khai Dinh's probably least resembles oriental architecture. Emperor Khai Dinh's tomb is built using concrete, its roof with slates and the gate is made of wrought iron. The builder made use of the lighting rod and electricity is used to light the place. Beyond these modern building materials and designs, the tomb had elements of eastern art mixed with western designs.

“Beautiful stairs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

this place was by far my favorite mausoleum visited in the area and you really get a work out climbing the thousands of stairs as its built on the side of a mountain. The entrance fee is 80,000 VND and though smaller than the Tu Duc and Minh Mang mausoleum, it has better decoration and better made. The first several "levels" are made of dark marble and have beautiful dragon staircases. The bottom one had marble soldiers, horses and elephants as well as a pavilion. You continue to climb until you get to the top mausoleum building which is in striking contrast to the dark marble. The mausoleum itself is made from a lighter material and is in a French baroque style. As you enter, you immediately notice the wall decor made of mosaics and glass reliefs depicting plants and animals. In the center room is the actual tomb with a full size gold seated statue of the king. Unfortunately there is an alter in front of the tomb so you can't get a frontal view but even from the side it's impressive. The room to the far left contains a few photos and personal items belonging to the emperor. Takes about 45 mins.

“Impressive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

This is a combination between Asia and Europe architecture. One of must see spots in Hue.
If you have time, you should visit the other Kings' tomb as well.

“Interesting”

You will learn something if you go. If you can hire a guide to do the main tombs and the citadelle the same day.

“Spectacular tomb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Lots of unusual pastel coloured mosaic work which I haven't seen elsewhere. Not overcrowded when we were there.
