“There are better options”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013 via mobile

I couldn't believe how run down it was. The room smelled strange/dirty and the walls were so thin there was even a curtain in front of the divider. The wooden panels weren't even pained, carpet grotty, uncomfortable bed & I got bitten for the first time in my 2 weeks on the island.
The nearest shop is a Tesco in a small shopping centre, a 15 minute walk down a busy road. It's near to the beach but it's not accessible.
The staff tried to be friendly but only one spoke English. I could get out fast enough.

Airport taxi is R54.70 so I took the 102 bus. No change for the R2.70 fare so make sure you get a five ringgit note when you change money (you will not get smaller). Georgetown gives a better rate than the airport but nowhere to change money near the accommodation. Buses are about every hour. 20 to 30 minutes after Georgetown, you get off the stop after Tesco, which is the huge white block building on your right with a Tesco sign. Cross the road (no one uses the walkway over the road by the bus stop) and take the first ROAD (not small turning) on your right by the large food court (open late afternoon onwards) and opposite a Michellin place. Follow the road around and it's a two floor house about 100 yards on your right. If you are a backpacker you have been to many similar places. Easy and friendly check in. Clean and basic room. Towel and toilet paper provided but no soap or shampoo. Air conditioning, which is very welcome. Free cold buffet breakfast. Parking, and normally quiet at night (allowing for thin walls), except for Chinese New Year when you get a week of very noisy fireworks at night. A good beach a few minutes walk away, but drunks use it in the evenings so sometimes beer bottles and even some bits of broken glass on it. Tesco is 15 minutes leisurely walk away, and when coming back from Georgetown on a 101,102 or 103 bus, I said "Tesco" and they understood where I meant. R2 fare.

Room Tip: If you are booking early and money is not tight, for as little as twice as much as a basic room in t...

I stayed here for a few nights on the suggestion of a couple met in Thailand in 2010. Make sure you have the full address written down, plus a map as this is literally a house in a residential area of Penang. Because of the location there is very little around to do or see. One eatery at the end of the road - an authentic Asian food hall. Better option would be to spend a few more quid and stay in Georgetown. Wi fi worked fine.

We stayed here and it was lovely. The family are very welcoming and will help you with anything, nothing is too much trouble. We had a smallroom which was built on the side of the garage, it was fine, clean and comfortable. The free breakfast was great, mainly toast, bread, fruit and cake but it was enough. You have to catch the local bus to the beach or into George town but they run often and are good. Right up the road is the hawkers centre which has plenty including plenty for veggies, I dont eat alot of meat and I was fine. The beer is more expensive than the food but thats Malaysia in general. The food is cheap and cooked to perfection, I think my meal averaged less than a quid.

Room Tip: We stayed in the room outside with an en suite shower room, it was clean and comfortable.

We went to penang for Xmas holidays and stayed in Baan Talay Homestay. The place is nice having 3 chalets, Clean and comfortable but the bathroom is small, difficult to bath. Also the walls are paper thin you can hear what people are talking in nearby chalet.

Overall the place is very nice, close to beach, quiet, staff is good, breakfast is okay (not much variety) and value of money.

Room Tip: This place is located near beach but this is not the main beach, then main beach where water sports...
