“A lovely place at the right time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2014

First of all this is a lovely place in a lovely forest setting surrounded by green-ess with good on site facilities and activities. Its 'Centre Parks' but much better. I've got lots to say about it, the good and bad so will put sub-headings for clearer information:

1. THE SITE ACTIVITIES - We went as a family with a 9yr old boy and near 7yr old girl. They both loved it. We planned to stay for 2 days but stayed an extra night because they enjoyed it so much. We went swimming in the pool which is on 3 tiers but not very deep so great for kids to play about in, but not really for swimming in.

We walked to the lake which is right at the top of the site (it didn't look too far but was in the blazing heat!). This is the water sports area where we did kayaking. We realised a couple of days in that it was very low season so there was hardly any other customers. We were able to swim in the lake which turned out to be the highlight of our visit. Beautiful. The workers at the lake were really helpful and friendly (though not sure they spoke any English).

We also did grass sliding which cost 20,000 dong (70p ish depending on exchange rate), went to see some crocodiles, did some target shooting.

Whilst exploring the site one day, we accidentally stumbled onto the 'sky walk' which was fun. There are amazing carved rocks (see photos). These are some activities that we got round to doing, other activities include zip wire, rock climbing and more water sports etc.

Overall we had a great time there and would return. However, as on the last day, we were the only customer there, many of the activities were unattended, but you can ask any member of staff around to call someone to the activity you want, on the plus side - no queues.

2. ACCOMMODATION - We had a room with 2 double beds and a balcony in one of the chalets upstairs, it was lovely, clean and spacious, great aircon, big bathroom with great shower. Two complimentary bottles of water daily when room was cleaned and towels replaced. We loved our room and no complaints at all. Costs £34 on exchange rate of £1 = 35,000d. Its the most expensive place we paid whilst in VN, but for a holiday resort and quality, we thought it was worth it.

3. CUSTOMER SERVICE - We found the majority of the staff working around the site really helpful and friendly though many can't speak English (not a problem for me as I'm Vietnamese but my husband is English). Ironically the staff at reception who do speak some English (probably paid more) were not as helpful or friendly as site staff. They did what they needed to but at times I felt like I was a nuisance to them. Summary: onsite staff = excellent, reception staff = ok.

4. BOOKING AND GETTING THERE FROM HCMC - There is an office in HCMC at 61 Hai Ba Trung, but when you get there, its called 'Lotus Tours'. I went there to book our room, the two ladies there were actually very helpful. Though the resort don't have their own transport services, the agents booked seats on a sleeping bus for us with a company called 'Phuong Trang', pick up was at their office on De Tham street. We paid a 50% deposit of our room booking.

It took approx 3hrs to get there from HCMC. The stop is just outside the resort, though not a long walk, in the heat of 35 degrees with 2 children and luggage, its hard work ( the resort will send transport over to pick you up if you book this when booking your room).

I have to say the service from Lotus Tours is exceptional particularly from Ngan. She booked tickets on the onwards journey to Dalat for us and sorted things out when there was a mix up (wrong advice given from Phuong Trang themselves).

When we decided to stay an extra night, Ngan re-booked our tickets (which had to be paid for at the Phuong Trang office in HCMC, Ngan paid for the tickets for us which we then paid to the Madagui Resort). This is above and beyond good service so I'm very grateful.

5. FOOD - The restaurant in the resort is quite expensive but the its nice enough - my tip would be if you do travel my coach, have a meal at the coach park restaurant where its cheaper. There isn't many choices of places to eat in the resort, though they have more than one restaurant, at low season only one is open.

6. BREAKFAST - This is a mix bag. At our first breakfast, there were only a handful of customers, we were offered a menu to choose from which was limited but ok. On the second morning, there was a international school party so a buffet breakfast was laid on which was very good, a wide range of choices!! On our last morning, as we were the only customer there, the onsite restaurant was closed and we were taken to their restaurant just outside. Again we were offered a menu with even less choice than the first morning.

In summary: Lovely place, good facilities, in our experience great rooms but....
- go in slightly higher season when its not packed but busy enough for them to put on buffet breakfast and all activities are staffed.
- go to the lake early for a swim.
- if you can, tip the staff around the site. We when tried to walk back from the Lake and our daughter couldn't walk anymore, someone (possibly field or site workers) we passed gave us a lift back, didn't ask for money.
- make sure you can get back from the lake, in higher season there's regular buses (which I think is a little expensive for a family) but no buses when we were there, hence walking.
- if you do arrive by coach and plan your onward trip by coach, make sure you buy your tickets in HCMC, there is no office in Madagui as I was told!!! We were just very fortunate to have such a good travel agent in HCMC who booked and paid on our behalf.
- In dryer seasons, the river is too low for some water sports, but the lake is fine.

Room Tip: If you have 2 small children, a Garden view deluxe should be sufficient for a cheaper stay, otherwis...

The resort has clearly had some money spent on it and may have school trips for team building. However, the staff were very unhelpful and the room was poorly equipped. There was a shower or more of a tap which was luck warm. There was a restaurant that would not server food, so we where taken to the transport cafe down the road from the hotel. Madagui is very pretty and there very little choice in accommodation. But I would contemplate camping over staying hear again.

Really I would love to give this place a higher review. We stayed here for 4 nights and were overall please with the facility. However, they have very poor customer service. First of all, very few staff speak any English. We are used to this, but it was worse than any facility I have visited in Southeast Asia including Thailand, Burma and Malaysia. Secondly, when we changed our dates, with two days notice (actually 5 days before our original dates), they still charged us an entire night as a cancellation fee. I figured this was a misunderstanding at the time or an inability of the local staff to make it right. But even after getting Booking.com involved (who did their best) they refused to refund our money even though our "cancellation" was actually a rebooking 3 days earlier. The grounds are lovely and the facilities are nice and this would be a great stop halfway between HCMC and Dalat. But they need to up their game if they want foreign guests. Also, depending on when you go and how busy they are, they may or may not have particular attractions up and running.

Lots of activities to do here, like rafting, zip lines, kayaking, crocodile fishing, jet sking, swimming, tennis, etc. I myself tried grass sliding, paintball, caving, forest trekking. There is even a small safari where there are ostriches and deers roaming around. A great resort to keep the whole family occupied. There are different kinds of accommodation like tents, dormitories and villas. I stayed in the villa which is well furnished and clean for vietnam's standards, but some of the lights weren't working. The free wifi to room wasn't functioning, but luckily my room was very close to one of the restaurant and was able to tap its wifi signal. Water from tap isn't clear, but that's okay as the resort provides complimentary drinking water. Many channels on TV, but mostly in Vietnamese and picture was fuzzy. Breakfast had variety and food was tasty. The resort staff are also very friendly. If on the way to dalat, this is one place to stay to keep yourself occupied with the many activities on offer.

We stopped here for 3 nights to give 3 teenage kids a break on our 8 day scooter tour about 150 km from Saigon, it's close to 1/2 way to Dalat.
The 3 deluxe rooms we booked were clean with a well stocked mini bar and were under the one Villa style roof with a central entrance connecting up to 4 motel type rooms
Beds are on the harder side which is not unusual in this neck of the woods.
Bathroom facilities were pretty clean and the shower had good pressure and plenty of hot water.
A bit of a worry was the room safe not being bolted down and there was strange scratching and animal type noises through the night so light sleepers may struggle.
The resort really only has one restaurant and the food is not great.
Activity wise paint ball, canoeing, jet ski & banana boat rides on the small but lovely man made lake, the zip line and grass luge are lots of fun and very reasonably priced.
The bike hire is a little expensive considering their condition.
Automatic weapons firing range (27-35,000 dong / round) is the same as in the city, but also a great activity with excellent staff to watch everything is safe.
A few more signs and better instruction in English in the rooms and around the resort would not go awry.
The Swimming Pools what a shame! Given a coat of paint, kept a bit cleaner, pumps run so the water cascaded into the next pool as designed and some decent lounge furniture, the 3 tiered swimming pool complex could be absolutely awesome, maybe even the place to go and relax, unfortunately its not.
Speaking of relaxing there really is no place to kick back and relax. A few loungers, hammocks and the like would certainly help give someone looking for a lay back for a few hours somewhere to go.
The staff are friendly, courteous and helpful, although many struggle with English including check in staff.
If this resort were to have a bit of an eye for detail and lots of TLC it really could be quite nice.
Don't be put off by this review, I'd just maybe only stay for a day or 2.

Room Tip: The Villas with private pool look good

Loads of fun things to do for the 10 yr old and up. Jetskis, zipline, paintball to name a few and crocodile fishing was a huge hit. Equipment seemed to be in very good condition (except for the mountain bikes). Swimming pool complex would be amazing if it was maintained, sadly it is not, although the water was reasonably clean (This was the main pool complex, not sure what the pools are like that are attached to some villas). Elephant Lake is beautiful and has plenty of water sport options, it has listed on the map that it has a restaurant but did not, you could get cold drinks and ice creams from the little food stand though. Rooms were large, clean and good water pressure in the shower. Rooms were a little noisy at night with something crawling about in the ceiling and walls! Being Westerners the teenagers struggled with the limited menu from the 1 restaurant that was operating, we were here for 3 nights and this menu was also for lunches. No night life just drinks in the restaurant, some couches to sit on to have a drink would have been nice. Staff were friendly and accommodating, whenever we had trouble with communication they would be able to find a staff member that could speak reasonable English. All in all we had a fun time here but our stay was a little long.

Some good activities (croc feeding, paintball, zip-line, jet skis) but others that were on the brochure and map they gave you weren't even working or even built yet!!! The whole place looked half finished, rocky uneven paths, pools not running properly, termites in the furniture... Was almost like they had opened it before finishing it.
Rooms were clean and tidy but there was something in the roof of our room that would run around and scratch at night! Rats maybe!?
There were 4 resteraunts advertised but only one running so we had to pretty much had to eat the same thing every breakfast lunch and dinner. And no one told us that the reseraunts were closed even though we were asking where to find them.
Which brings me to the staff. Not a word of English. Most of our time was spent frustratingly trying to comunicate with the staff! Some were ok and some tried really hard to understand but it was very difficult.
Would definitely not recommend for people wishing to stay overnight, may be ok just for a stop-in to do some of the activities? Was very dissatisfied.
