Our holiday plans brought us to Doolin the three nights leading up to Good Friday. We had hoped to secure a room at Daly’s Doolin, but Susan was full. She did offer to book us in the 3 room B & B next door which was being run by her daughter Kate, husband Charles and thier daughter Lilly. Susan had run this house as part of Daly’s until this year, so it had all the same type of furnishings and amenities as Daly’s.
Kate greeted us at the door and immediately offered us a choice of drinks. We chose the coffee with a splash of Baileys. We then proceeded to chat for a long time. Kate told us that she recently moved back to Doolin with her husband and daughter after living abroad. She said she had spent 15 years assisting her mother with Daly’s House. She filled us in on her family as we had gotten to know Susan after having stayed with her for 2 times previously. After catching up, Kate offered to help us with getting the luggage to our room.
The room was big by B&B standards. She had given us a room with a huge bathroom and a bathtub. The bed was a queen and was beautifully set with throw pillows. The room was immaculately clean. Because our trip was 2 weeks, we had 4 suitcases. Kate brought us a second luggage stand. A hot pot with tea and coffee were available in the room. There was an alarm clock, hair dryer and extra power adapter. There was also a flashlight for walking down to town after dark. Nothing more was needed.
Breakfast was the same as Daly’s. The breakfast buffet included a fresh fruit salad, bananas, yoghurts, cereals, bread, juice and scones. Wait, there’s more. This was, in addition a hot breakfast. The choices included a full Irish breakfast, eggs with salmon, French toast with real maple syrup imported from Canada and porridge with Bailys. She offered any combination of the above. The breakfasts were great. As strange as this may be, this American likes black pudding and had asked for it. Kate said she usually does not have it available because she gets very few requests for it. However, the second morning at breakfast, Kate and Charles said they had it available. I was floored and said they did not have to do this. Kate replied it was no problem.
Though Kate and Charles are just starting out, they are off to a great start. Kate said she receives advice and support from her folks next door. However, it does appear that they are doing well on their own.
In summary, we found nothing lacking at Kate’s Place. We will not hesitate to book there the next time we are in Doolin.
