“breathtaking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

is built on top of the mountain Pirchiriano (962 meters above sea level) and the top of the mountain emerges slightly from the floor of the church.

the best way (what I recommend) to enjoy the visit is reach by foot from the bottom of the valley (one hour climb along the marked trails), but can also be reached by car.

largely fallen into ruin, maintains important architectural achievements and beautiful frescoes. the "staircase of the Dead" and the "portal of the Zodiac" are particularly remarkable. these and other elements of the abbey are recognizable in the novel "The Name of the Rose."
also the view alone is worth the trip. if you add it to the visit to the abbey, you'll understand qhy that site is not to be missed

some of the abbey's elements, like the "staircase of the Dead", are (guess what?) reachable only by steep stairs

This ancient site is built atop a hill overlooking the valley, and you can reach with an easy 10' walk. The dramatic view of La sacra from the valley inspires you of old times and antique feelings of sacred. A must see in the area.

“a look on Susa valley and the plain from one of the symbols of Piemonte”

The athmosphere and the landscape in autumn is breathtaking. The road to get there is small and with many curves. You have to do a 10 min walk to get there from the parking

The trip to the top of the mountain makes you realize how difficult it must have been to build the abbey, which shows itself after a short but steep walk, and there are more steps to come. Steps that lead to the beautiful church and magnificent views of the valley below. The highlight is the portal with all the carved out figures. Also impressive is the way the whole abbey is built on the rocks, that are an integrated part of the building itself. It has a rawness to it. One of the highlights of our trip in this region. Only 5 euro entrance fee.

“Sacra di San Michele”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

Whilevin Turin, our waiter at the restaraunt highly recommended that we visit this abbey after leaving Turin. About 40 miles away and 3300 feet.this abbey sits on top of a mountain with a 360* view. Absolutely beautiful. Lots of climbing and stairs, but well rewarding.
