is built on top of the mountain Pirchiriano (962 meters above sea level) and the top of the mountain emerges slightly from the floor of the church.
the best way (what I recommend) to enjoy the visit is reach by foot from the bottom of the valley (one hour climb along the marked trails), but can also be reached by car.
largely fallen into ruin, maintains important architectural achievements and beautiful frescoes. the "staircase of the Dead" and the "portal of the Zodiac" are particularly remarkable. these and other elements of the abbey are recognizable in the novel "The Name of the Rose."
also the view alone is worth the trip. if you add it to the visit to the abbey, you'll understand qhy that site is not to be missed
some of the abbey's elements, like the "staircase of the Dead", are (guess what?) reachable only by steep stairs
