Leenane Hotel,
Leenane, County Galway. They have quite a good website.
Two of us stayed in the hotel for 2 nights mid August 2006.
There was a special offer - 2 nights B & B €159 each including 5 course dinner on both nights. (Five courses included starter, soup, main, dessert, tea/coffee) If we had not wanted the dinner option it would have cost €120 each.
The hotel is located 5 minutes walk from the village of Leenane. It is situated on the shores of the stunningly beautiful Killary harbour and all of the bedrooms at the front of the hotel enjoy this view.

Unfortunately our stay was most disappointing mostly because of other very inconsiderate residents and the hotels lack of ‘duty of care’ to us.. Here is how it went.
On arrival we asked if we could have breakfast at 7am on the following morning as we had a bus to catch at 7:30am. We were told this was not possible and no other breakfast arrangements were offered. (Our friends in a nearby B&B had no problem getting a freshly cooked breakfast at 7). Breakfast in Leenane Hotel begins serving at 8:30am but apparently staff are there from 8am, this was still too late for us.

The reception area, lounge bar and dining room are nicely decorated. It looks like the may have done a good refurb about 4 or 5 years ago.
The bedroom, was very mediocre and it’s only saving grace was the view of Killary harbour.
The room we were in was old and faded, creaky old clean furniture is fine, but creaky old and greasy is another story altogether. (Black hair in the drawer, grubby sash windows, finger printed mirror and greasy food particles on the phone). Surprisingly the bathroom, though old was perfectly clean. It has an old enamelled bath and a new shower which was hot at all times but not very powerful.
Tea/Coffee facilities, hair dryer, selection of shampoos and gels in the bathroom are all available.

The smoking area is outside the main reception door and this is a problem if the smokers are inconsiderate.
On night one we did not get to sleep until 3am due to ignorant residents partying under our window. (At 2:30am one of them knocked on hour bedroom door)
We reported it to reception next day and though they were very ‘nice’ about it, the following night we were once more woken at 3am and got back to sleep at 5am. It was awful, here we were in one of Irelands most scenic and tranquil spots and we may as well have been in the centre of Dublin or London. In fact I stayed in a hotel in Kensington London recently and got a far superior rest with no interruptions over 5 nights.

I reported this the next day when we were leaving and a most understanding staff member gave us a 10% reduction on our bill. While I appreciated this, I don’t think it was compensation enough after the torture we had been through.

We had two evening meals in the hotel and both were a very pleasant experience; the food was good and the waiting staff extremely attentive.

Breakfast was the basic fruit cereals and cooked type and was unexceptional. A staff member there who we had not met before was extremely rude to us about where we would sit. (She mentioned twice how most of the other guests had already had breakfast – nudge nudge wink wink – we arrived at 10am, breakfast service finishes at 10:30am, so what was her problem?

The solution here was simple. All it would have taken was to ask the 'noisy ones' to enjoy their stay but to keep the noise levels at a reasonable level after a certain time. I have no evidence to prove that this was ever done by the hotel management.

Overall it was not a good experience, I would not return there and judging by my experience I really could not confidently recommend it to anyone else.

  • Liked — Dining and Dining room staff in the evening
  • Disliked — Noise from other residents
  • Tips/Secrets: — Select room carefully. front of house, great views, noise from road etc, rear rooms may be a better option
