“Dinner in a quaint, quirky hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

On a family holiday in August 2012 (2 adults, 3 kids - 11, 7 and 5), we had dinner in this lovely little hotel. The food was relatively good hotel fare, if a bit pricey. There was something for everyone, and plenty for the kids to do while they were waiting for the food to be served. I had a fantastic steak, my wife had fresh sea bass. The kids all found something to their liking. Service was efficient and very friendly. Our dinner location in what was probably an underused function room adjacent to the main dining room, was a bit soulless, but the friendly staff made up for this. We stayed on and had coffee in the very welcoming lounge afterwards, with its roaring fire and odd collection of furniture.

While we didn't stay in the hotel, we agreed that it would definitely be somewhere we would consider returning to in the future. It is in a great location, with spectacular views over Killary Harbour, and has great access to Connemara and all its beautiful beaches and attractions. At about 3 and a half hours from Dublin, it is just about in the range for a weekend break.

All-in-all a very pleasant experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view!

We stayed in this hotel for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed our 3 nights b&b with 3 dinners. The staff were so pleasant and the atmosphere was so relaxed, just what we needed. The meals were lovely, very good selection for breakfast and the homemade brown bread was just delicious. We liked it so much we asked for the recipe, as did a number of other guests. We had a lovely room with a breathtaking view over Killary Harbour and the mountains. The only downside is there's no lift and we weren't offered any help with our luggage. I do hope some was offered to more elderly visitors. We look forward to our next visit to this lovely spot.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front of hotel have the view of the harbour.

Just back from a 2 night mid-week break at the Leenane Hotel, and it was a perfect choice. The location is beautiful, looking out over the water. Just a short walk (3 mins) into Leenane village, which is tiny, but has a couple of places to eat , a shop and a pub or two - what more could you want. The room was in the older part of the hotel, old fasnioned in decor, but spacious, clean and with that view from the window. Such a peaceful night's sleep. We ate one evening meal in the hotel as part of our deal, and it was more than generous. The most delicious steaks. And drinks afterwards in the resident's lounge, which is quite magical - huge room, with a fire at one end, and no end of cosy sofas and chairs to curl up in. No TV, just a computer with internet access, so it really is a most relaxing room. A few people playing cards, people reading, everyone speaking in hushed tones - loved it. Breakfast was excellent, a serve-yourself buffet, and the food just kept coming out of the kitchen. This is a great base for travelling about the area, and the staff were very helpful - we were able to buy a ticket for Kylemore Abbey in Reception at at discount. It really is a stunning part of the world - hope to return for longer next time and would stay here again.

Having been strongly recommended by a friend, my wife & I stayed for 3-night deal, B&B + dinner each night - and we enjoyed every minute, we'll be back for sure - seems a lot of their guests do so, and often ! Good value, food and wine excellent - we loved it so much that we had lunch in the bar every day as well. Staff & the brothers managing the hotel are friendly, attentive and helpful and are to be complimented. The location, of course, helps enormously as it is simply stunning - you just unwind from the first moment you look out from your bedroom window onto the stunning views over the Killary Fiord and the soaring hills surrounding - yes, relaxation it is ! See you there sometime !

Room Tip: No lifts, so ground or first floor, sea facing.

My husband and I stayed here recently on a cycling vacation. The view from our room was beautiful. Very comfortable. Nice bar and lounge area. Nice large bathroom with fluffy towels and tub/shower combo. Food in restaurant also very good.

Room Tip: Ask for waterview room. Also need to specify double bed. We had twins.

Booked a three night break with evening meals for €199 per adult and €20 for our daughter. We arrived pretty late and tired on the Friday night and immediately were made welcome. The room was clean and large enough for the three of us and the view from the small balcony was spectacular as promised. There is no aircon and as a result the room did quite warm but as the place was so quiet there was no problem leaving the window open.
We headed for the restaurant and were shown to a well appointed table once again overlooking Killary harbour. The fixed menu offered a choice of appetizers and both my wife and I had the crab terrine whilst our daughter(10) had the tomato and mozerella salad. The crab was sublime and the salad whilst a little chunky was perfectly dressed and tasted fantastic.
The potato and leek soup was exceptional and would love to know how such simple ingredients could be made to taste so good.
I went for the pork belly which is a favorite both eating out and I do my own and I have to say that it had to be the best ever. My wife had hake and again cooked to perfection. Both of these mains were accompained by baby potatos, sweet mashed carrots and a pea/ green bean mix. My daughter had the pasta and I never thought I would ever hear her say that the mushrooms were fantastic.
Desert was lemon posett, creme brulee and a brownie. The posett's zest was offset by a just the right amount of Baileys cream. The brulee and brownie did the job as well. Probably the finest meal I have eaten anywhere.
I could rave about the rest of the food for the next two nights incluing Salmon roulade and steaks to die for. Every single dish was perfect.
Breakfast was a mountain of Irish breakfast regulars along with continental selection of cured meats. Nothing exceptional but plentiful and tea and coffee was delivered quickly.
We had one small problem on Saturday night when the kitchen appeared to have lost our order as one then a second table that came in after us was served before us. The staff did then go out of their way to make up for the error. This while mildly annoying did not take away from our overall enjoyment of the weekend.
I would be happy to recommend this hotel for location, value, service and food.

We took advantage of a terrific three night B&B offer with three dinners and had a wonderful stay in the Leenane Hotel, so much so that we stayed an extra night (at the same rate). Comfortable rooms with stunning views across Killary Harbour, in a hotel full of character and grace. Food was delicious, and cosy bar or large beautifully furnished residents' lounge provided the perfect setting to relax with an after-dinner drink in front of a roaring fire. The hotel was almost fully booked and the busy staff were at all times friendly and efficient and happy to help in every way. With its magnificent location in the midst of the spectacular scenery of Connemara, we strongly recommend this hotel, either as a base for hill walking or cycling, or like us, just driving about, taking in the sights, happy to return each evening.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room at the front of the hotel with a view of Killary.
